What a great interview. Notice he pauses when he speaks, hesitant to tell what he is seeing in his mind. You can see it is painful for him just remembering it. My Great Uncle was a combat engineer in the 1st wave on Omaha on D Day. He really didnt want to talk about it. When i pressed him, he said very little, and spoke hesitantly like Mr. Kiggins. But he did tell me, His unit was practically wiped out on Omaha. Had it not been for a U.S. Destroyer Captain dis obeying orders, the invasion on Omaha might have failed. This captain brought his destroyer in until it hit a sandbar and then turned it sideways so they could give our troops direct 5 inch gunfire on the german pillboxes and dug in enemy. He said "Thank God for that destroyer captain, or we would have all been killed. That ships crew knocked out enough germans and pill boxes it enabled us to get off the beach. " While the destroyer captain and his crews deeds went largely unknown, I did see one report in WW2 war reels that it did happen. My Great Uncles unit was so decimated he said they kept the survivors around Paris for the remainder of the war clearing mines, pillboxes, german messes, etc, and basically cleaning up the messes the war had caused. His brother, my Grandfather, landed at Omaha about noon on D day with U.S. 2nd armored division. He also said the German artillery was very heavy at that time. Mr Cappetto had featured a picture of my Grandfather sitting in his M7 self propelled 105mm howitzer during the Battle of the Bulge in one of his documentarys. Mr. Cappetto was kind enough to email me that picture. It is one of the only pics of my GrandPap in WW2 combat we have. It hangs in my home as an 8 x 10. Thank you for that Mr. Cappetto. A 3rd brother, my other Great Uncle, served in North Africa as a combat engineer with U.S. 1st armored, and his unit was wiped out at Faid pass, then got hit again at Kasserine pass by Rommel. General Patton had those few survivors sent home as they didnt want them talking to any of the new troops about what Rommel had did to them, or telling how the german tanks were better than ours. 3 brothers, all in combat in WW2, all 3 wounded but survived, none ever knew where the others were at. And my Great Uncle said they never discussed the war between themselves either. (Which i thought odd at 1st). But another Uncle, also a combat engineer, who fought in the pacific was ask if he was in a certain nasty battle, he replied "Yes, and I spent the last 50 years trying to forget it. " Combat engineers like Mr. Kiggins seen some of the worst of it. They were usually under enemy fire trying to help the advance, and took very high casualties. We can only imagine the horrors these men seen and went through. No small wonder they are hesitant to talk about it, they can see & re live the horror again just talking about it. Thank God for the Greatest Generation. We ALL, and many millions more, and many other country's , OWE THEM our freedoms we have today. They are extraordinary Heroes in every sense of the word. Each and every one if them. Thank you and God Bless them all. And Thank you Mr. Cappetto. Preserving these WW2 veterans stories is extremely important for future generations.

Amen my friend. Thank you for your kind words and for sharing about your family serving during WWII. It has been a great honor to serve my country and my God through the lens of my camera these past 20 years. FREEDOM is NEVER FREE!! We are now fighting for the same freedoms in our country that our Veterans fought for on foreign soil. We owe them all a great debt we cannot fully repay. God bless you!! larrycappetto.com

Dear Larry, there Is a lot to say about war, history, our role in history. We are the next generation to those brave makers of european freedom, both in politics and on the field. You were so sensitive to the need to explore all that. I have been curious too. My parents told me about the liberation of Italy during WW2. They lived those great days and in their simplicity they taught me what Is right. I eventually married a US Serviceman and moved to the US where I lived for 20 years.I got my B.L.S . and M.A. in the US. I almost finished my Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, but following divorce I preferred to come back to Italy. Eventually I got my honorary Ph.D. from a Christian College. May I say it is not only history, it Is comparative knowledge, It Is social studies. It Is Idealism that took a turn to the right with Nazism. It was a great war fought for a great reason, an who can question an effort like that? My ex father in law was a WW2 veteran too.Now I live in Italy and work for charities, people wonder why I didnt go after the american dream ,maybe I am too sensitive too..

Yes, why would the imposter in D.C. remember our history when he is hell bent on erasing it? The whole so called administration has their fate sealed. Read Isaiah Chapter 14 and Psalm 83. larrycappetto.com

Seeing how JB is a lifelong cronic pathological liar, had he said anything about D Day, it would have likely been a lie anyway. He has NO right to even speak of such things imo. So im glad he said nothing.😉 The rest of us DIDNT FORGET. Thats what's important. 👍

Anyway later in the afternoon.. It's obvious that he very much skipped over the part we all want to know which is the very emotional part. There are some other videos out there that are incredibly emotional recounts of that day. This guy probably either suppressed it or can't handle talking about it. We love him anyway thank you sir

Thank yor your comment and watching the story. Leo was my second interview 20 years ago when I started my work. I've learned a lot over the years and typically a combat veteran won't talk to a civilian. It's been a very humbling experience listening to these stories. Over 1000 stories now.
