The Toyota GT86 is famously known for having the looks of a serious sports car but not necessarily the performance of one. This means that the rear-wheel-drive, two-seater from Japan regularly leaves one wanting that little bit more when you’re pushing it through the gears. Thanks to the hardworking people at ATM Chiptuning in Cape Town, my GT86 now gives me exactly that! The question now is, how much faster can Stage 1 software make this car? Let’s find out...
Special thanks to Branden & Jemma for helping me film throughout the day and keeping me company. 😉

I am very happy with the car now. Even my friends could immediately feel the car has more punch

Awesome video mate! Wondering if you still have 215 all season spec Tyres? I have a set of Good Year Eagle F1 Sports (aus) 225. With a hard launch, I can get into the 6’s on stock tune.. could only imagine you’d get under 6.5 with some stickier sporty rubber, still, awesome content

Hey man, thanks for the great comment! I'm currently running on a set of 225 Michelin PS4's, but they are definitely not fresh anymore. I'm tempted to get a new set, but I still have decent rubber left and to be honest I'm enjoying the little slip they give me for some oversteer fun

There is no way in hell the 86 can beat your RS. Didn't we do like 6.6 seconds to 100 with three people in the car? 😂😂

@roadswaysouth I don't know man. Power means less in fwd. Also all in good fun. Get a few cars and make a day of it

Yeah it could actually be a fun day out. Also, I think if I get some new tyres the car should hook up much better and maybe stand a chance

Unfortunately that would probably go up to 8-9 seconds here in Gauteng with the elevation.

Damn that's awful. At that point you'd have to go with forced induction just to get the stock time 🫣

@roadswaysouth Absolutely. Every N/A car I've driven or been in here at elevation seems to run out of breath accelerating. I think Galimoto Media tested the Mazda CX30 at the coast as well as in Johannesburg. And running the same car, with the same VBOX equipment, the difference in 0 to 100 times was almost 3 seconds. Literally taking a peppy SUV eith adequate performance, and making it underpowered here. I find it hard to move away from turbo cars. Test drove a 2017 Mazda 3 Astina the other day with the 2.0 SkyActiv G engine. On paper it performs well and at coats it should get 0 to 100 in under 9 seconds. But here it just felt so dead and powerless compared to my 2014 Passat 1.8 TSI.

I knew elevation made a difference in power figures, but I didn't know the effects would be that severe in SA. It must be very frustrating knowing you have to take all this into consideration when getting a new car or something. However, if you ever do get a car that feels good and pulls well, you can be pretty confident knowing it will be brilliant at coastal level.
