To use the Email Attic technique... Here's how to do it:
1. Select create New Label then make a label called “Email Attic”.
2. Identify emails that you’re tempted to delete but can’t quite bear the thought of deleting just
yet (for starting points here, look for older emails, emails that you’re procrastinating over
whether they’re useful or not, etc).
3. As you process your emails, apply the “Email Attic” label - tick the selection box at the
left hand side of the message row(s), click the “Luggage Tab” icon at the top of the message list,
type in first few letters of the label name in the box and then select (tick) and apply it when it
appears.
4. “Archive” the selected messages by clicking the “Filebox” icon at the top of the message list.
5. Set a reminder in your calendar. You will be deleting everything with the “Email Attic”
label in a week’s time (or 2 weeks / 4 weeks, whatever is comfortable) once your inbox is at zero.
6. Over the coming week / 2 weeks / 4 weeks while you still have it, you are free to use the
“Email Attic” label folder as a reference “folder” if you suddenly realise you do actually
need any of the emails in there (of course, this is unlikely).
All these messages are now safely stored away, but no longer clogging up your Gmail Inbox.
If you really had no need of them, you could choose to delete them.
Or of course just continue to keep them safe in your Email Attic, should they ever be needed. You get to choose!
