Full build, painting, and weathering of the Bronco Staghound Mk III armoured car. You can find this kit at scalemodelshq.com/collections...
The Staghound is unusual in that it was American designed but never used by US forces in combat: instead, its main users in WW2 were British and Commonwealth forces. There were several variants of the Staghound: the Mk I had a 37mm gun; the Mk II had a 3 inch howitzer, and the model featured here, the Mk III had the turret taken from a 6-pdr (40 mm) gun armed Crusader tank.
The build of this kit is relatively straightforward, with a small number of PE parts. During the build I also use a Miniart stowage set, a few spare jerrycans from the stash, and make a tarp from metal foil. The kit was painted using AK Real Colours for the base colour and Vallejo Model Color acrylics for the various details. For the weathering I used various oil paints plus AK acrylic texture and AK enamels for the mud.

This Bronco kit is a beauty.....I've not tried any yet but this could be next on the 'to buy' list. Always a pleasure watching and listening to your builds, great job and an excellent final reveal. I like the weathering result.....it's great getting ideas from other modellers, especially the likes of Night Shift and Panzermeister36. Who would have thought that a tin of crackers could provide a product....a very effective canvas and another tip for future builds.

Nice enjoyable video my friend.I built this kit a few weeks ago with some Bronco crew.Just sent pics to Hamilkar barkas for his next video model show if you want to take a look at my attempt when he publishes it but from my experience i can tell you the following: You were lucky that you didn't sand down the 'overhanging' turret top.It's meant to be like that! As for the angled bars that you left out because they 'stuck out',you are right:it's very difficult to see such a thing on wartimre photos.I made the assumption that they were projectile splash guards (that 'crevice' under the turret makes a beautiful spot to place a shot!}.I fitted the long lengths flush with the hull and they seemed to fit nicely when i did that.The only part i had trouble with was the large ring that fits between the turret and the hull:I just can't figure exactly where it is supposed to be glued so i have just put on loose.I notice that you left this part off altogether :) so i'm guessing you had the same problem?A lovely and highly detailed kit tho'.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd 2 года назад
Hi mate. Thanks for sharing your experience with the kit - it's good to know I wasn't the only one. Yes, I also had trouble with that strange turret ring piece. Thanks for the info about the overhanging part - I did think it would be a strange error given how large the overhang was, but I couldn't see that area well on archive pictures. Thanks again for the information - much appreciated.

Your videos are always a pleasure to watch and I especially enjoy your armor modelling videos like the Neubfahrzeug kit. Please do more WW2-era stuff! Maybe a french tank kit would be a fun opportunity to play with cast armor textures, and maybe you could try kitbashing a captured french tank with a German anti tank gun, like the R35 PaK 36. That would be very interesting and could even make for a 2 part video!

those things that stuck out around the turret ring were there to add tension to the turret so it doesnt just flop and spin around when you pick it up like most tanks do,

Very nice job, I would like to start a channel on modeling as well, one day, not able to right now. I like to light my models, and normally I'm in the sci-fi arena, but I've been working on a 1945 Union Pacific Big Boy train for my father in-law who loves trains and has always wanted a good detailed Big Boy, but they run in upwards of 2k USD. So I thought Hmmm, so for a Christmas gift I'm going to give him one, HO scale rolling across a iron bridge, I have a headlight, fire box flickering LED and a light in the back of the coal car. Been working on it since March '21, now I'm close to finishing pouring in more hours as it's a race against the clock, lol! The point to all this my friend, is that I like watching you work and talk to help give me that encouragement to get to work. I have a rare nerve disease and it's painful and hard to get going. So, I thank you, and of course Uncle Night Shift! Having watched you both and after doing this train, I'm going to give a T-34 a shot. It will be interesting. I picked up a small not so expensive model of the T-34 to give it a try, and if I like it, I will invest in a better model of it. I'm oddly getting more into WWII vehicles lol probably from the content I'm watching, but as a Light Modeler (adding lights) I enjoy the idea of not just lighting the model but also lighting the war action. Thanks for the post and I still go back and watch the Fire Truck you did for Chernobyl diorama. All videos I watch and am subscribed to get thumbs up from me and this is no exception! Thank you again.

Wow, thank you mate - I really appreciate your kind feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. There are some nice channels out there with lighting effects for some of the Bandai Star Wars models too. Good luck with your train - I'm sure your father in law will love it.
@dadtype2339
@dadtype2339 2 года назад
@@ModelNerd thank you, and I meant every word. I know you don't light models, my comment was to suggest you should, as 1 I love your channel the way it is and enjoy when you talk or talk about the plan or mind behind a decision or the history of the model, and 2 lighting isn't for everyone, but hats off to those who do, as it adds way more work and brain thinking which is what I like, I was just giving info on what I do as in if we were having a spot of tea and talking about the craft, lol. The bummer to my train model is, it was missing the bell and two wheels. So I scratch built a bell from online pictures, as for the missing wheel, I made it the back wheels so I can then use cotton as steam and hide the fact the wheels are missing. You got to love the acts of hiding problems or goofs with other influences or battle damage. Cheers to you Sir and thank you for the heart and reply! Looking forward to what's next.

Hi! I'm working on this exact same model and was a bit confused by that overhanging bit on the top/back of the turret, but I have 3 books on Staghounds and it does appear like that in technical drawings. There are very few good photos of the rear or top of the vehicle from that time period, though.

Another great build M.N.! Love the weathering and the storage, tarps ! Just wondering if your lighted the AK o.d. scc #15 any ? I painted a british 6 lb anti-tank gun with it but it just seems too dark to me, ended up lighting up a little. Also what did you thin it with ? Thanks
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd 2 года назад
Thanks Patrick. I didn't lighten it, but I agree with you. I think it comes out the bottle looking really good - a lovely smooth appearance and tone, but it darkens a lot with varnishes. I only added one semi-gloss for decals and weathering and a final matt, but it has definitely darkened it a bit too much. I thinned the paint with AK's High Compatibility Thinner but recently I've had a couple of strange issues with that (leaving sort of tide marks in the paint) so I've switched to Tamiya lacquer thinner and it works just as well.

Nice model of a great looking vehicle. Good weathering skills on display. Any reason for not modulating the base green colour? You use alot of the other modern finishing techniques but not shading. Just curious.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd 2 года назад
Hi Brian. Thanks for watching. I have tried colour modulation on a few previous models but I've never mentioned it in the videos because it has never been visible! I always make it subtle because I'm a bit worried about ruining the look - then of course by the time the paint dries and the varnish goes on, the effect is totally lost. It is definitely something I am working on though :)

I dont understand how people dont get problems with their white spirits removing the paint? I always spray many coats of Tamiya ts 13 gloss lacquer but the humbrol enamel thinner always seems to remove paint anyways. Is it the Humbrol thinner being too strong or is the Tamiya ts 13 a bad gloss coat not doing a good job protecting my paint from the enamel thinners? Btw, very nice to see a video from you again Model nerd I always love youre videos and I learn a lot from you thanks.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd 2 года назад
Hi mate. I also use Tamiya TS-13 as my gloss coat and I don't have issues with the AK thinners or Tamiya enamel thinner. I'm only using small amounts though - a very lightly dampened brush (I dab the brush off on a paper towel first). Just enough to help the oil paint move (or be removed).
@statoilbensin2190
@statoilbensin2190 2 года назад
@@ModelNerd Thanks yeah I also use just a wery small amount but I think it must be the Humbrol thinners their not really meant to be used for wheatering but for thinning their enamel laqcuers. I think I will look into AK's thinner thanks.

Like you I don't see the point of openable hatches on a model with no interior. Doesn't look like there's much in the way of locator pins and nibs for a follow-on interior add-on kit either, so... why? Scratchbuilding an interior is always an option but finding reference photos will be interesting to say the least. Is the unfortunate interaction between the AK paint you chose and Tamiya's decal setting solution deliberate do you think (Tamiya wanting to sandbox kit buyers into using their products exclusively), or does Tamiya just not bother testing their products against other manufacturers' products? I watched you "not having luck" with decals in a few past videos but I can't believe it's all your fault. If I were Tamiya I'd strive for compatibility with as many other products as I could given that not all of their products can be easily found in many markets. All that aside, I like the way it turned out. Armored cars have always fascinated me and it's nice to see them get some love. Also nice to hear a modeler freely admit they learn techniques from other modelers. You guys aren't posting all your secrets to RU-vid for nothing, it seems.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd 2 года назад
Thanks for watching Mark. I'm not sure about the decal setting solution: AK Real Colors and Tamiya acrylics are actually mixable (i.e. in the airbrush to mix your own colours), so I'm surprised at the reaction to the setting solution. It could just be that I didn't give a decent coat of varnish in that area.
