Staithes is a quaint traditional fishing village in North Yorkshire, and right next door is Runswick Bay which is equally picturesque. In this video, we'll visit both Staithes and Runswick Bay, tell you about its fishing history, stories of Captain James Cook who lived in Staithes briefly, smuggling and its famous art scene with Laura Knight and the rest of the Staithes Art group.
They are both charming places to visit and you can even walk between them on the Cleeveland Way National Walking Trail if you are feeling fit!
We'll also pop into the famous port of Whitby which was our base for the weekend. We have previously done a full tour of Whitby, • Best Seaside Town? WHI... but we were provided accommodation to showcase the area by www.maison-parfaite.com/ and we thank them for hosting us. They have many luxury properties all over Yorkshire, so do check out their website if you are looking to stay.
For many more videos on Yorkshire towns, villages and attractions check out our playlist. We have lots to show you!
• Yorkshire - Travel Gui...
If you like fishing villages then maybe look at Robin Hood's Bay as well. It's a magical place and just the other side of Whitby!

Hello there. I wouldn’t normally mention the words ‘medical issues’ in a comment but I wanted you to know the reach that your excellent, well balanced between entertainment, history and information videos are having. I cannot and will not be able to travel to the wonderful places that you visit and your videos are helping to fill a gap. I just wanted to say thank you for the enjoyment your video travels give me. Best wishes to you both.

I am currently living in the Far East so really enjoyed your trip to Staithes, my family on my grandmother's side come from 'Steers', Verrill and England. My Uncle Tom had the white cottage just before the Cod and Lobster and we always referred to it as Uncle Tom's Cabin, it had a lovely view of the sea from the back window which had been knocked in by the sea many times during bad storms. Thanks for the memory.

And no Bondi Lifesavers there to drag all the dumb tourists out again before they go down for the third time! It pays the local industry here to ensure those services prosper since you can't have the punters drowning before you've had a chance to shake all the loot out of them! 😉😊

Would you consider doing videos following the Albert Smith Culinary Capers books by Steve Higgs? Take us to sample where each famous British dish originated, like pork pies, Bakewell tarts, Stilton cheese, Bedfordshire clangers, Cumberland sausage, etc.? I realize you've already been to many of these places, but it would be fun to see the local foods and the shops where they are made. 😊

You always find the most interesting little tidbits about each place. The Staithes cottages have a different look from those in other villages you've featured. How great to learn they were painted to match the owner's fishing boats! The 'terra cotta' colored tile roofs make sense near the sea, yet they differ from ours here in S. California. (Ours are wider, and laid with the curve at the top.) The fishing industry has changed worldwide; San Diego once hosted a substantial tuna fleet, with boats going out for months, as far as Ecuador. The boats and the canneries were phased out in the 1970s. I had no idea about alum, but we see all aspects of the textile industry in these towns. A number of my Nottingham ancestors worked in lace production. Thanks for another great trip! :)

The rich fishing history, tales of Captain James Cook, and the mention of smuggling add a fascinating layer to the charm of these places. The famous art scene with Laura Knight and the Staithes Art group is a testament to the creative atmosphere that permeates the villages. The fact that you can even walk between Staithes and Runswick Bay on the Cleveland Way National Walking Trail is a wonderful opportunity for adventure and exploration. Very enjoyable visit - thank you. Nice to see there is a vibrant museum in Staithes now, looks very interesting. When you said Look out! I thougt it was for sea gulls, I think they must make life & house keeping a bit difficult - worse than Brixham! My chickens are bad enough - imagine if they were on my roof!?! England is such a great country - there are so many history-steeped places to visit - my husband misses it so much, especially these old places & a proper beer in a proper pub - so thanks for keeping us in touch with our heritage & favourite places. Actually - have you ever been down to Noss Mayo in the South Hams? Bit tiny & tucked away... Have a fun week!
@MemorySeekers
@MemorySeekers Год назад
The seagulls can be a real pest these days. You see many more signs up warning of attacks, they seem to have become far more brave. We have not been down to Noss Mayo but I have pinned it on our travel map now as it looks very sweet. Thanks!

@@MemorySeekers And it's cousin up the creek (I can never remember it's name) Newton Ferrers - wonder if you could get someone to take you up in a boat? As the roads are typical of the South Hams, narrow & winding. Used to like those 2-villages, I think Noss has The Dolphin pub just above the water. Hope Cove is another cute place, only small, but you need 20p (when I was there in '19) for the loo! Don't know if you've ever done Dartmouth - my sister stayed in a lovely place near the castle back in the spring - & the drive from Dartmouth, past Blackpool, to Torcross along Slapton sands - where they did the practising for the D Day landings is very historic & quite dramatic on a beautiful spring morning - you can follow the lanes tru' to Kingsbridge, Aveton Gifford along the tidal road & on to Noss & Newton - be quite a long day! Yes, we didn't used to be fans of Herring Gulls, people used to call them aerial rats - but it's our own faults, I guess! Happy travels, guys - you do have a great job!

Hi, I'd like to thank you so much for this wonderful video. For deep personal reasons I like to occasionally 'visit' Staithes via RU-vid videos, but the vast majority are ruined by featuring background music that is either too loud, or just plain pointless (60s hits!?!). By keeping your background music to a minimum - and very tasteful when used, you have let the natural ambience of the bays come through, which is surely the whole point of these videos. In a nutshell, watching this made me feel I was back there and in my current delicate and emotional state I really needed that. From the bottom of my heart I thank you.

I had fish and chips in the Magpie and thought them a world beater. What makes one great place better than another is highly subjective and probably varies from day to day. I visited Whitby from Australia a few years ago. Good F&C in Oz. Sadly I now live in the Philippines and cannot get good fish and chips. 😢 I would love to get back to the Whitby area but sadly age and poor health probably prevent it.

That's why youtube is such a pleasure these days.! I'm 83 now & not going many places these days, but the videos are a great way to see so much beauty you can't get to yourself. I basically 'travel the world' every day. I'm a Brit but i have never been to this area of the UK and I can see what I have missed because my focus tended to be North Wales for holidays. Now in the US for many years, but I return via videos to enjoy new things in UK ! Have fun in your 'travels' as I do !

It's a pity that an enterprising local could not offer shared taxis / taxi bus services from these villages (and Robin Hoods Bay) up to the bus stops in the summer.

I think only 4 people live at runswick year round and are elderly. The walk to the bus stop is not bad at all really, certainly wouldn't justify a taxi an only about 100 meters from the carpark.

Have you considered doing a video on Holmfirth, the place where "Last of the Summer Wine" was filmed?

Love north Yorkshire coast line such quaint cottages. I'm probably going to annoy people, but I am glad the fishing industry is on its way out. Over fishing has depleted the fish along with being a cruel industry don't like the thought of lobsters being boiled alive either.

I don't know why but I just had a mental image of the sensitive Sharyn dragging Anton Shigur's gas cylinder along that waterfront to stealthily administer a painless demise to all the day's catch. 😱🙄😉
