They look well built, could you put them in the stake pocket upside down? More compact, just curious.

They will turn and fit upside down, but I think the weight would bend the metal plate that holds the bolt in. That would probably make the carrier fail and maybe fall off. With them on top like this, the tire weight is pushing down on the main tube and holds all the weight fine.

Might be a stupid question, but are all stake pockets of the 2x4 variety? The spare tire carrier looks pretty wide like it would need a 2x6 or maybe my depth perception is off.

They are not all 2x4, but most are. I have a flatbed gooseneck trailer that has pockets that are just a bit smaller than 2x4 and I have a hard time fitting anything in them.
