There are some instances in which staking newly planted trees is helpful, for example, when planting on very windy sites or slopes. The support straps, wires, or hoses on these stakes should be removed from the tree after the first year. If those materials are left on, as the trunk expands and the straps get tighter, they can cut off the normal sap flow inside the tree. This can lead to dieback and decline over time.
