In this first in a new series of videos in which I will cover the fundamentals of philately, I talk about the four major methods of printing postage stamps and how to identify them. A stamp collector may have identical looking stamps which are in fact 2 different stamps printed at different times by different methods. It's important to be able to recognize the different types of printing in order to properly identify the stamps in your collection.

Thanks Ted! Ever thought about doing a video on identifying the different types and printings of Machins?

I hadn't thought of it. It'll require a lot of study, but I can try.

@@tedtalksstamps I know just trying to figure out which Machins are Photogravure and which are Lithograph are enough to make me pull my hair out. And then there's those phosphor bands if you want to go crazy.

Great video and very helpful information. I think it's wonderful that you used the Mariazell Basilica to show the different types of printing. I live about 50 minutes' drive from Mariazell. Best regards :)

Excellent overview. And for those who want to delve very deep into this subject check th book "Fundamentals of Philately" by Williams for an encyclopedic discussion of printing methods.

great vid as always. Would be interesting to further focus on printing stamps in the last few years. What differences do they do and printing from photographs too not only by drawings. Another facet would be the types of paper used and whether they used acid free paper from the beginning.

Excellent video, thank you so much, Ted! Just the other day (honestly) I thought I should learn more about printing methods, because one encounters mention of printing method used for stamps frequently, and I am never EXACTLY sure what each is. And here you teach us about just that. I am looking forward very much to your next "Stamp Collecting Basics".

Ted, I've been going through your video catalog and wanted to let you know how useful they are. I appreciate the time you put in to make these videos and cognizant of the benefit I derive from them with minimizing wasted time, with mistakes avoided and with money saved. I have written you down in my "to do list" to set something aside for you with my next upcoming quarterly bonus pay. I'll figure out how to use your "$ Thanks" icon. Again, your videos are a real benefit. Keep up the excellent effort. With regards, Hans

Great presentation Ted. Could you have a look at inks and paper and the effects on these materials since 1840. I'm. Always surprised when I soak stamps old and new that the water and detergent I use have no obvious effect on ink or paper. Cheers Peter from Aussie.

I share your feelings. And when you do come across a new engraved issue, it will undoubtedly be from a laser-engraved die, which does not come close to capturing the character of hand-engraving.

I suspect engraved stamps will be making a comeback if the amount of money the USPS lost last year to counterfeits is accurate......$150,000,000!
@tedtalksstamps
@tedtalksstamps 5 месяцев назад
I’d like to think so, but I don’t hold out any hope of the USPS suddenly developing any business sense.
