Just read many of the comments. What a fun time it was playing on this band!!! Stan was back from his first major illness and loving being back on the road. The audiences all over Europe and England were fantastic. To answer a couple of questions. Yes - that's me. And yes - the sound guy seemed to be asleep at the wheel a few times during the concert, but over all the sound is pretty good and the video is great. What a treat seeing all those old friends. Sadly, many of them are gone now: Stan Willie Maiiden, Quinn Davis, Chuck Carter, Ramon Lopez, Dick Shearer, and Fred Carter.

+Mike Vax This is one of my all time favorite video's A great band hitting on all cylinders. Great version of the song. You can really feel the energy and the guys playing it look like they are having a great time and really into it. I played trombone (on a much much lower level) but listening to this brings back a lot of great memories for me. Thanks for the great music, Mike.

The Trumpeteer at the end was my father Patrick Dennis Hlavaty. He was an incredibly talented guy and he was born on this day March, 17th 1941. He hit the high notes in life as much as he did here in this video. I miss you Dad. I'll be with you one day soon.

I was the same age as you (Gordon Vincent) when I first fell in love with Stan Kenton. Heard him play in person and have his autograph! I'm now 88. Still love that music and that man.

1957 and I'm in the Navy stationed within an hour of NJ's Seaside Heights. Already a jazz fan in general & Kenton in particular, I hung out in a bar on the boardwalk on summer Sunday afternoons because they had a small jazz group. When ever they took a break they started playing this and it took me back to earlier years. I think of that every time I hear or play it. Great memories for 60 years!!

I was privileged to see Stan Kenton in Glasgow Scotland. It was a wonderful experience that I hold dear though I am 83 I still play his cd's loud when no one is home.

My first jazz hero back in the early 50's. A few years later walked into a bar on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights, NJ and a small group was playing some jazz. When they took a break this is what they played. Good memories all around.

Hi there,I agree, first heard him in 1950 on 78 rpm discs am now 75 with 36 Cd's plus numerous LP's which includes the one of the clip of Intermission Riff. Wish I could get DVD. The greatest band ever a lot people wouldn't agree thou.Hope they keep finding new material.

I was and still am a huge Kenton fan. I played trumpet. My greatest-ever trumpet ambition would have been to play lead with Stan. I loved all the big bands but would always put Stan first. How greatly missed such great music is.

As a bass trombonist who played in a regional ballroom band for roughly a quarter of century, I've lost count of how many times I've played this chart. But I never tired of it. It's an invigorating song, and lifted my spirits everytime. My favorite Kenton chart.

+John Perks Oh, John! You have no idea!! I have a terrific 2-record (vinyl) with tons of his stuff. Among my favorites: Body and Soul (with Maynard Ferguson), Opus in Pastels, It Might As Well Be Spring. But I've never been sure of which I love best: Concerto To End All Concertos or Intermission Riff. I have other albums (all vinyl and bought in the '60s early '70s, including his Here's That Rainy Day live from Redlands which I saw him open his show with at Dante's and am crazy about! Are you familiar with the Los Angeles area ? I am in a suburb (born downtown in the California Hospital). We have a fair number of jazz venues here. But all my favorite musicians are gone. :( Do you know our dear Chuck Niles? So nice to hear back from you, John! Jan :)

Id, Ido!!. I 've lived and breathed Kenton's jazz for a million years. ALL jazz (except old-time early stuff). The West Coast sounds are a part of my soul. I could nama names and tracks by the zillion, but let's just say we are soul-mates.

I was a keyboardist back in the day, and attended two of Stan's music camps at the University of Redlands, CA., summers of '70 and '71. I met Stan both times, he gave me some pointers, and posed with me for photos which he also autographed. He and his band performed for all of us. They about blew us through the rear wall! He was a firm supporter of young talent ... and I was saddened when I learned of his passing. What a great musician. R.I.P.

Stan Kenton leads off on piano, he’s joined by the rhythm section, then the trombone section joins in, then there are the saxophones and trumpets, and we are all in musical heaven. Kids, this is real music.

I'm 49 and used to play trombone in a swing band back in the late '80's and just discovered this song searching Amazon mp3's. It's got to be one of the best cruisin' songs ever pinned. Love Kenton's Opus In Chartreuse. I'm surprised there isn't a better RU-vid recording posted. I found the best sounding version on his album "Live in Las Vegas At The Tropicana". It opens with a kick-ass sounding bass trombone James Bond theme styled "Bop-Bop" lick much different from the bari-sax versions.

Back in 1960 I went to a Stan Kenton concert playing in the band shell at Balboa Park, San Diego. It was terrific and after the performance I ran up onto the stage for his autograph. He was very nice and very tall. About 6' 5" I'd say.

Stan Kenton was a huge favorite of mine in the 40's...I saw his orchestra in person at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles...What a fantastic big band sound...ahead of his time...His many versions of Artistry in Rhythm...Bolero,etc.

My cousin Nev Roberts, Halle Orchestra bass trombonist and brilliant teacher, always told his brass ensemble students at Manchester and Leeds that if they learned Stan Kenton arrangements they would get a job in any symphony orchestra.

Pretty much my favourite version of this old chestnut. Thought it was goin to be messy at first but then the bones started. Nuff said, I can forgive Stan anything when the trombones get going.Swings like hell too for a live recording.

+nemo227 As much as I love those blasting horns I really love piano. Do you play the great standards (I LOVE!) or more progressive avant-gard (sp ?? !) pieces? I include in the "standards" Broadway musical songs. Love Allen Broadbent, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Pete Jolly, Marian McPartland.. there's no end to the list! Anita O'Day so, so great, incomparable!! I've noticed your comments here, Nemo227, and appreciate how knowledgeable you are. Don't know why the great, great David Raksin just came into my head...what a maestro!! I sure enjoyed hearing about your bass! 😉😉 Jan !

The best recording of Intermission Riff I've ever heard. 16yrs later after the 1956 recording. Heard the tune first back in the latter 1950s (never really heard/remember the 1946 version).

This is THRILLING! I'm smiling and laughing as I listen!! Reminds me of how thrilled I was to finally see Stan Kenton (at Dante's). For those who are not familiar, Dante's was a tiny, intimate room. Several years later when I saw him at Concerts By The Sea, we sat close enough to put my drink on his piano. (That's when he played my request, and said, "You have a beautiful face." To this day, I'm convinced the remark was his response to my reaction and appreciation of the lose-your-mind and too, too much music!! xxx!!!!

The first time I saw Kenton's Band was 1955 at St. Louis' Club Imperial. Standing room only ...blew the roof off of the place. Kenton's band was the best ever.

Stan Kenton, really has those Trombones, running right up through the sky with those good sounds of music, he has this ability to mold the Brass sections in a manner of addictiveness that makes you want more of the Good Stuff! I played Trombone, and it just makes you feel good!!

I was so privileged to hang out with all these guys when I was 18 attending his annual summer jazz camp this same year 1972. Except the drummer was a young Peter Erskine! I was so impressed with the sound Joe Torres got from his tenor sax. And OMGosh, my theory class was taught by the brilliant Hank Levy.

That would have been 1964 ? Winter Gardens, Saw first house and in the interval went out front and bought tickets for the second. I seem to remember it was the first Mellophonium band. First time I saw the band was Portsmouth Savoy Ballroom 1956.

Saw this same band in Glasgow when they toured the UK. I believe Lloyd Spoon was in the bone section. Enjoyed a beverage with him. One of Stan’s last road bands unfortunately. Amazing power and some fine soloists. He lived to tour!! Thanks for posting!

nemo227 Yeah the trumpets on this one are insane, but that was the 70's sound, trumpets ruled then...but my bigger question is where are the big bands/stage bands...it was a big deal in the 70's, seems to have dropped off the landscape...? Maybe I am just out of touch, getting old, sigh...

nemo227 Well I'm so jealous, hearing those guys, or Buddy Rich, or Woody Herman, or Thad Jones...I hear you about seeing the band live. Hearing legends in person is so inspiring...I saw Harry James at Disneyland.... I was 13, he was, I am guessing 70, it was free, hardly anybody there. My dad said he was famous...I had taken up trumpet that year in grade 9, so I go to the library when I get back home, he's a legend...I decided then and there i want to be a trumpet player...(which i am not, but would never trade my want to be for anything)

Graham Livingstone Have you heard the Stan Kenton Legacy Orchestra? (Actually until recently it was called the Stan Kenton Alumni Band.) We are carrying on the tradition! I have different places in my heart for all of Stan's "albums"!(records, cd's, lp's, mp3's... whatever) Also, I don't think I've ever met A Kenton song I din't like. Some of them take a lot of dedicated analysisssess. But I always come out singing, to myself, days later! Years later! And now, decades later! It's the music that haunts my head! And I love it!!! Stan the Man lives on...!

i heard stan and the band a number of times in the 60's.....most of the jazz magazine didn't brag on him too much....but the colleges and trained college musicians loved that band....now basie and ellington were great too; but come on stan was years ahead of his and our time. where are the innovators today?????

After the concert, Stan goes to get the check for the gig, is told "we're sorry Mr. Kenton, we had agreed to pay you $XXXXX for this night but since your band blew the entire roof off the place, we're going to have to dock your pay..." LOL- seriously, amazing, I would have had a heart attack if I was in the front row hearing that band and would have died with a smile on my face.
