I met Stan the year he died. Got him to sign a couple of comics. Waited in a queue 5 hours. His minders said, “don’t talk to Stan!” To hell with that. When my turn came, I looked at him and said, “thanks for the memories Mr Lee”. He looked up at me, smiled and winked. The 5 hour wait was worth it.
Marvel comics were my escape in the 1970s from an abusive father. I lived inside those books. I'll be forever grateful for them, for helping me get through the horror that was my childhood.
Stan Lee will always be a legend for all he did for the comic book industry. Stan and comic books will always be intertwined as one. I thank Stan Lee for all he did during his long and amazing life...
Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko stumbled into superhero comics by accident and together made them unforgettable. There's no question that Kirby and Ditko did most of the work and that Stan Lee took most of the credit. Its hardly surprising seeing that his uncle owned the business and thought very little of any of them.
I have been waiting for this moment for 10 years now, I knew of him before, but ten years ago, I tried to watch everything he created, all he did in his life, see how in ten years watch him go from household name to legendary status that people share their favorite cameos or perhaps only remember him for that. I couldn’t been more proud to be around for those ten years, it was a tragedy when that day happened but I’m happy to be alive when he was, and today would have been his centennial, and let’s celebrate it. Excelsior, true believers. Stanley Martin Lieber: December 12th, 1922- November 12th, 2018.
Stan Lee gave me a great gift. The ability to draw comics just by reading the book Drawing comics the marvel way. I wish I could have thanked him for it.
.. No Stan Lee .. No Marvel Comics .. BUT .. No Jack Kirby .. No Marvel Comics as well . Stan was credited the Creation of all these characters , Heroes & Villains alike .. .. BUT .. I feel that the Artists SHOULD have been given 50% of the credit for creating the characters as well . Whether it was Jack Kirby , Steve Ditko , John Romita , John Buscema , Gene Colan , Bill Everett , Don Heck , etc..etc . .. Not to give the Creators " Ammunition " for a reason to take Marvel Comics to Court . That is just Greed & Stupidity , they ALL signed a contract & were paid for there work , they ALL knew that Marvel would AUTOMATICALLY own ALL characters created in their Books .. Therefore : It wouldn't hurt Marvel to say : Such & Such , created by So & So ... in MY opinion ONLY ...
It's like Bob kane/bill finger, Todd mcfarlane/Alan grant... I personally believe the person drawing deserves more ownership because they're actually bringing the character to light, and a picture's worth a thousand words, they say.
@@angelmanfredy Stan Lee was there 20 years after Jack Kirby left Timely comics he had no ideas through those 20 years...Jack Kirby comes back when it was called Atlas Stan lee all of a sudden has these ideas, no fukken way the character ideas and creations came from Jack and Steve. I've been collecting since 1977 at age 9 Stan Lee is a fukken liar and a fraud. I've been around longer than you. You were probably just born in 2000
Here’s the thing though… those guys couldn’t do what Stan did. He was the FACE of the company. He had so much charisma, and was the mascot of the company. He give a lot of credit to his artists, and always have! He’s not like Jobs who hid the fact that he had a lot of help… but he IS like Jobs in that, like you said, no Stan, no Marvel.
Stephen John Ditko[1][2] (/ˈdɪtkoʊ/; November 2, 1927 - June 29, 2018) was an American comics artist and writer best known for being the co-creator of Marvel superhero Spider-Man and creator of Doctor Strange. He also made notable contributions to the character of Iron Man, revolutionizing the character's red and yellow design.
The reason the FF didn't wear costumes at first was because Marvel were being distributed by DC. They didn't want this subsidary cashing in on their superhero range. If you look at their first 2 issues covers, they could easily be mistaken for any of their monsters comics. So the superhero aspect of the FF is played down - hence their street clothes. By issue 3, the FF were selling so strongly Marvel could openly advertise them as traditional comic superheroes.
I never met Stan 'the Man' Lee, but that man became the soul of Marvel Comics! He placed a lot of effort into the Marvel Universe. I don't see why some fans are so sour about who should receive credit where credit is due. Kirby, and Steve were great in their own fashion, but Stan was the one who had a vision for the Marvel Universe. Without Stan, would anyone have really cared about Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko?
I love Kirby, but a man who worked for the competition can't really be called a 'Visionary' for Marvel. Stan stepped up to tell stories that he wanted to share. I'm sure he thought about the comic code authority and the chances of losing his employment. Yet, he did it. Kirby and Steve were part of the round table. Yes, but without a King Arthur, would you have had a great story?
@@emorywhitehair1341 That analogy does not remotely work. Kirby absolutely was a visionary he designed these characters he came up with so many ideas for Fantastic Four, Thor etc, and while Stan Lee isn't a complete fraud like Bob Kane is, Lee did not contribute as much to the initial idea.
WELL DESERVED CREDITS & ACCOLADES! YES OF COURSE HE DIDNT DO IT ALL BY HIMSELF; BUT NOBODY ELSE IN THE COMIC-BOOK WORLD COULD MAKE THE SAME CLAIM! HE REPRESENTED THE INDUSTRY 4 ALL, NOT JUST MARVEL& DC😮😮😅😊😊!
It was called Marvel comics #1 in 1939 which had Human Torch, Namor the Submariner, Ka-Zar and other stories, they changed title to Marvel Mystery Comics after that.
Come books were the only things I read as a kid. I hated reading books. If I didn’t like the pictures, which is what attracted me to the comic books, I wouldn’t have read anything. I learned a lot from reading comic books.
It's weird that Kirby created all these characters. Especially the Silver Surfer was all Jack. Even him talking about Dr Strange... Was all Steve Ditko. I'm not sure why he lies about all these things he had no to little involvement in creating. Watch in search for Steve Ditko... That is a little more telling than this fluf piece.
It's too bad Stan got caught up in the showman/salesman act that he forgot to 1) acknowledge that comics are collaborative and 2) Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko were the heavy lifters when it came to storytelling. I don't deny the energy they all had together (like a good rock band), but Jack and Steve were industry pros before and after Stan.
Yeaaaaaaah Stan. I miss you... And... For Marvel... the story is not important anymore... Only diversity and representation... But the story....nah... The stuff you were writing....Was Homeric Stan.
He makes it sound like he was the sole creator of all these characters and concepts.BS....And i am pretty sure a lot of you folks would agree with me.But there's one thing no one can deny;the man had lots of charisma and it's obvious that he loved the spotlight.
Timely Comics Company which later became Marvel Comics Company had made Thin Man that could stretch in stories before Plastic Man, guess Stan Lee forgot.
Lothar which has powers of super strength, super speed and invulnerable was in Mandrake the magician stories starting in 1934 publish by King Features so Black Panther is not the first.
Cell can partially split but some times too late to form a whole identical twin so could just be an extra leg or other body part does not mean is a mutant.
This story about "Stan Lee" touched me in a way I never been touched before. Thank you "Stan Lee for your inspiration, wisdom, passion and creativity! I will hold you in my heart & mind forever! You are more than just a comic book artist & writer,
Leave it alone already Stan said we all contribute to the Marvel Age , Also these guys in Marvel are my Grandfather's age Jack Kirby was born in 1917, and that's one the years one my Grandfather's was born So Stan Lee , 1922, Steve Ditko 1927, these guys were born half century ago, and Marvel Studios only know Stan Lee but some of them know Jack Kirby ,& Steve Ditko, others that came after them without these men and Women [ because Women were part of Marvel Comics as well behind the scenes with the publishing and other jobs in the Marvel Comics Company .] DC Comics is still catching up to Marvel but both companies are equally. match now. Thank you Stan Lee , I Still collect hard and soft back back issues of Marvel with some new Heroes like The Thunderbolts.
