The world explorer deriding a family man and his incredibly passionate defence. This song tears at the heart of any man who has known years of love from a loyal wife.
I'm a 20 year old Ohio boy and been listening to Stan Rogers on and off over the years. My uncle and I used to listen to his song and sing along to him. Truly one of the greatest artist to ever live. This is my favorite song of all time. R.I.P. Stan Rogers. May we never forget you.
American 16 year old. Heard him from looking up Sea Shanties after an hour or so of playing Black Flag. Hearing Barrett's Privateers made me curious about the singer, and I learned the rest of his music from that. This is one of my absolute favorite songs
This is my daughters favorite song. She now has a son. It's my favorite too. It gives old married men a nice warm feeling having been old fashioned enough to appreciate a good woman and our children. This is a perspective I'm sure Stan was imparting with this song. There is no more to be said and no better way to say it. Thank God Stan Rogers spent time on earth to bring so much joy and understanding of life. Check House of Orange for a real statement of what people feel but don't say
Stan's wife said , this song explains the dichotomy of Stan's life --He loved being on the road but , he also loved being at home with his wife & son . We , all , have suffered a huge loss in our collective lives with Stan being with the angels now . Rest in Peace Stan
I’m so happy that so many people have been deeply touched by this song, which is, for me, the most beautiful love song ever written. Perhaps that seems strange, given that I’m a woman, but I feel I relate deeply to the two sides of manhood struggling with their opposing desires. Utterly touching, pure poetry.
I have been listening to Stan Rogers for nearly 6 years now (stumbled upon this amazing Canadian folksinger by chance) and I STILL come across songs I've never heard, like this one. And to know he died at only 33... heartbreaking. It's like his heart and soul was on a white-knuckle mission to pump out as much musical beauty as possible. RIP Stan Rogers, your voice still carries.
I've been listening to Stan Rogers since way before he died. This is, to me, one of the most beautiful love songs that I've ever heard...in fact, the first time I heard it, serendipitously, I found myself in tears.
No matter how much I listen to Stan Rogers , I only want more --Nobody writes or sings music like this anywhere in the world --His music & his words speak to us of family , imagination , heartbreak , Love , Kindness and the thrills of life .
@@perman57 i have seen Garnett in person. sure wish i had the opportunity to see stan. Garnett's song about the small miracle (baby horse) is fantastic... i THINK he wrote it but not sure.. sorry i forgot the song title
It's "Small Miracle", and it's A guaranteed (happy) tearjerker. Garnet's voice isn't quite as powerful as Stan's was but excellent in its own right. Sometimes, Stan's son, Nathan, sounds just like his father.
The national voice of Canada. And a musical genius - he apparently wrote everything in his head, some times to thepoint of writing it down just before the recording session then pulling it off. I WISH I COULD HAVE HEARD MORE OF WHAT WAS TO COME. Thanks for being a Canadian hero Stan.
It's a superficial thing - but the man doesn't have a star on Canada's walk of fame. There have been petitions. The man should have a statue in one of those side gardens on Paliament Hill.
Just sitting here and this old favorite popped into my head. I could listen to Stan Rogers’ songs all day. He’s by far the best songwriter who ever lived.
“But which one of these has given us more love of life, you, your tropic maids, or me, my wife.” Couldn’t put it any other way, I’m only a young man but I love hearing the love in Stans songs. Specifically, this one and lies.
This song takes my breath away each time I hear it , it's probably Stan's most beautiful song and his most melodic piece of music . The sound of Garnet's various guitars and the 12 string guitar in the background is simply beautiful .
I'm from nova Scotia and proud to say I knew Stan he was a true easterner and he sang from his soul listen to the emotions that he is expressing in this song
Classic song from my favourite album, his last. He was getting better and better all the time. If he had lived longer Stan would have been an international superstar to say the least.
I read somewhere that this song was actually a metaphor for Stan's life as a singer, in that he wanted to be the lock keeper at home with his family but at the same time he also wanted to be the ship's captain, ie traveling from concert to concert to perform his music. in this context, this great, great song becomes an even greater one.
Stan Rogers was unknown to until couple of months ago when I found a tape in some of my boxes. The only song I hear was house of orange I used my phone to shazam the author and voila; ever since I have been listening to his songs the voice and the melody is just stunning.
One of my favourites. Ontario's Lt Gov Elizabeth Dowdeswell acknowledged Stan in her remarks to a recent reception celebrating the Georgian Bay Association's 100th Anniversary, noting the iconic Great Lakes and how Stan captured their essence in his songs.
i wish i could have met him i was born 1988 7+ years too late he is everything i love about music a friend once said to me "the best of humankind are taken away to teach the rest of us to follow in their ways" i'm not religious but i do believe that people like Stan will one day be classified as some sort of saint maybe that's too far but i think of mother Theresa and what she did one day people like Stan will be fully recognised 'cos for alot of us music is the only way to heal Thank u Stan R
Stan died in a fire on a plane when it landed in Cincinnati from Texas. He had just played in a big festival there and that performance was said to have launched his career. Sad.
i'm 23, listen to mostly metal/rock music, but stan has had a huge impact on my life. truly a great talent. wish i could have gotten to meet him and shake his hand. he's very missed.
LOCK-KEEPER (Stan Rogers) You say, "Well-met again, Lock-keeper! We're laden even deeper that the time before, Oriental oils and tea brought down from Singapore." As we wait for my lock to cycle I say, "My wife has given me a son." "A son!" you cry, "Is that all that you've done?" She wears bougainvillea blossoms. You pluck 'em from her hair and toss 'em in the tide, Sweep her in your arms and carry her inside. Her sighs catch on your shoulder; Her moonlit eyes grow bold and wiser through her tears And I say, "How could you stand to leave her for a year?" "Then come with me" you say, "to where the Southern Cross Rides high upon your shoulder." "Come with me!" you cry, "Each day you tend this lock, you're one day older, While your blood runs colder." But that anchor chain's a fetter And with it you are tethered to the foam, And I wouldn't trade your life for one hour of home. Sure I'm stuck here on the Seaway While you compensate for leeway through the Trades; And you shoot the stars to see the miles you've made. And you laugh at hearts you've riven, But which of these has given us more love of life, You, your tropic maids, or me, my wife. "Then come with me" you say, "to where the Southern Cross Rides high upon your shoulder." "Ah come with me!" you cry, "Each day you tend this lock, you're one day older, While your blood runs colder." But that anchor chain's a fetter And with it you are tethered to the foam, And I wouldn't trade your life for one hour of home. Ah your anchor chain's a fetter And with it you are tethered to the foam, And I wouldn't trade your whole life for just one hour of home. Written and recorded by Stan Rogers. met stan through cbc special years ago recorded the program and watched it for three years my freind showed every night and later would ask are you watching stan tonight we played it so much that my daugther at 8 knew word for word each song wish it had happened much earlier
Young people today need to heed the words of this song. It may seem tempting to go about, be promiscuous, do all sorts of things the Devil tricks you into doing. But the real joy and only place you can find fulfillment is through family, through raising children and living a humble life.
I remember singing this driving back from the JR Hospital in Oxford on 1st October 1993 & yes my wife had just given me son, second son! All soo long ago, in fact he is taking his driving test today! But still a favorite song. Good luck with you test Matthew, who knows in years to come you may come across this comment!
John Gorka wrote a song about Stan called something like "Legends." Stan was one of John's musical heros and I don't think that he would assume to compete with him. As lovely as John Gorka's voice is, there are few people with a voice like Stan had. Still, John Gorka is exceptionally talented and has been my favorite for many years.
I love this song as it has special meaning to me. My great grandfather John Gilligan was a lockkeeper at the Cardinal Locks in Ontario on the st Lawrence Seaway ca 1900.
This song is just amazing, both musically and lyrically. The music seduces you and makes the sailors fantasy seem so amazing, but then the juxtaposition with the lock-keepers life makes you realize that even though you think the sailors life is enchanting, the lock-keepers life is even better. Its the perfect love song. Idk why but it just delivers this added piquancy that really hits me. Its just so relatable, because its not the typical theme of chasing a womans affection, its about a man reflecting on his own love of his woman, and not just of the woman, but also of home and his family, there are just so many layers to it. Including Stans personal inspiration of reflecting on his love and homesickness when he was on tour.
Just stunning. I too remember John Wright singing this with a passion. Also another who has passed on, my late friend Mike Hand from Llandudno, who was a great Stan Rogers fan and sang his songs extremely well. Sadly missed all. But thanks for uploading this and making me cry a little....
I have the "remembering Stan Rogers" an East Coast Tribute CD. It is truly a jewel in my music collection. Recorded at the Rebecca Cohn in 1995. when I heard it for the first time, I knew I had to buy it, it might by difficult to find but worth the search.
So many reasons to love this song; too few characters to list them all... it's astounding what happens when such an insight into life and such instinct for making music come together. I'd love to upload some of Stan's music to listen to at work, but am afraid to do it because of the temptation to break into tears - or sing along, depending on which song it is...
Yes, come visit us in July or August with a chance you'll miss the rain. StanFest in July in Canso, the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo in Halifax about the same time. Check out our sections of the TransCanadaTrail along our Eastern Shore, then see PEI for the Confederation Trail and Charlottetown Festival. I don't think we have anything to match the Reds, or the Bengals (sp?) over here, but there's sometimes good amateur baseball in Summerside PEI.
best cover i have ever heard is from a doon co limerick lad tommy carew ...guitar n vocals with the josephine marsh band, totally breaks your heart to listen to it
@@NK73080 I'm just finishing Garnet Rogers' book "Night Drive-Travels with my brother". It unlocks a lot of things I didn't know. I rediscovered Garnet's contributions to the music in its raw form. I have been to Canso and worked there for three years. I know Stan's relatives there, and have friends there that jammed with Stan and Garnet. The overproduction can be explained by the ability of CBC funding to produce music by musicians barely grinding out a living. Garnet's book is raw, funny, sad, honest, longing, open, cathartic and spectacular. I was a fan of Stan's music and discovered Garnet's integral contributions to the product. And then, I read the book.....it's the "Stan Rogers and his Music Honestly Explained" manual.
