Stan Rogers talks to Paul Soles (1930-2021) after performing some songs. Paul hosted the short lived CBC series, Canada After Dark. Paul was a actor and television personality.
At 7:44, the host said, "We're stopping for a commercial break . ." and that was the end of the video . .OWWWW. I MISS STAN ROGERS. Gone Way, Way, Way too soon!! Imagine, he would only be 74 years old today. He would have had another 40 years to write, sing, and love his native land . . . !! An artist, a great heart, expressing the very soul of Canada.
I am not Canadian, but I am into many Canadian artist, as we listen in Maryland to CBC Radio 2. Just saw Jim Cuddy on Blue Rodeo on line for a concert. I first heard of Stan in 1981 on a D.C. Folk radio show. A sad lost, as he would have 20 or more CDs. But in Garnet's book, Stan was headed for some trouble with his life style. I have all of the known bootleg concerts for Stan on youtube. They needed to be shared for all. There is a great novel out "Rise Again" fiction, by Jim Cain, about the Mary Ellen Carter being saved.
Had heard Stan's music but never got the chance to see him perform. I remember well the morning the CBC radio news came on with the horrible news. My future wife and I were in bed and just held on to each other so tight and, of course, they ended the newscast with the full version of 45 Years. We cried like babies - Stan's death and that song somehow cemented our relationship. We didnd't make it to 45 years as a couple but have three fine gentlemen as sons, so there's that.
My sons a musical savant , Stan Rogers is his favourite musician . I bought him his 1st guitar at 7 after playing Santanas; Black magic woman spotless . I’m sure you’ve played with a few of my family members. Acoustic guitar made in a day is remarkable . I’ve played 100k+ homemade guitars at the Montreal folk festival. RIP Stan , gone far too soon . ❤🙏🏼
You have the best Stan Rogers videos. I recognized the guitar on the Turnaround cover immediately. Never knew that it was Stan's first guitar. Thank you for posting this great music.
Only"celebrity" I ever mustered the courage to speak to. He was a large man compared to my 5'4". He was standing at a bar, during his break at a club in Ottawa, talking to another big fella named Wayne Ronstadt. I waited for a pause on their conversation and yhen said, " you' re one of my heroes ", ( as I am also a musician). He shook his head and replied," you' re a sick wee pup". I was a bit embarrassed, but never admired him or his talent as a singer/ song writer/ musician, and a national treasure.
RIP Stan Rogers (1949-1983) A victim of smoke inhalation onboard Air Canada Flight 797 after it safely landed at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Boone County, Kentucky due to an in-flight fire.
Great interview. Wish we could see Stan's performances. This was from the Canadian talk show Canada After Dark on No. 30th, 1978. You may recognize the voice of the host Paul Soles, as his was the voice of Peter Parker & Spiderman in the original Stan Lee animated series from the 60s.
Amazing! Glad I checked for any new uploads on Stan footage. What a treat! One of my favorite singer-songwriters. From a millennial Washington-State American singer-songwriter... the music never dies.
You are welcome Rob, as I have just about every known bootleg concert for Stan on youtube. It had to be shared with all to keep the memory of Stan alive for future generations.
Does anyone know which song he's talking about when he says he wrong a song related to John Paul Jones plundering Canso? He mentions it at the 5:00 mark. I can't for the life of me think of a song like that unless it's Barrett's Privateers, which is obviously not about John Paul Jones, though it IS about privateering. Is that the one or is there one I've not heard of?
I think he meant Barrett's. What I understood is that he's saying it's a song about "taking revenge" on John Paul Jones, as Soles had just suggested, in that it's written the opposite way around (Nova Scotians setting out to plunder Americans).
Thank you for your comment. And thanks for asking about the date of this, as usual I have that on all of my RU-vid's! So I added it to the title, November 30, 1978. Jim Cain has a book on Amazon, Rise Again, a great fictional book about the raising of The Mary Ellen Carter. Thanks again, for bringing to my attention there is no date on this video.
