Elmore Evans This is a dramatization and given that school systems are underfunded and large, its very difficult to reach students who dont want to be taught even when its at a decent school. Raquel's solution is to stay the course and make up excuses like "we can't do anything without more resources". And then when the resource, a good teacher like Mr. Escalante, does come in she doesn't know what to do bc all she's ever done is make up excuses.

@d0ugh2k
@d0ugh2k 2 года назад
I agree with your sentiment in principle (Raquel wasn't used to Escalante's initiative and was maybe too disillusioned) but I think you're oversimplifying. Raquel's concern was quite legitimate: she didn't want to see the kids fail and lose whatever little motivation they had. And while having a great teacher helps a great deal, even the best of teachers can only do so much. There are often socioeconomic, family, and other issues beyond the teacher's (and the student's) control. My wife is an public elementary school teacher in a solidly middle to middle upper class neighborhood, and these issues still come up.

This reminds me of a teacher I had my sophomore year. I had Algebra and was horrible at it. I made mostly D's and F's with a few bright spots-some C-'s on quizzes and tests. Our teacher suddenly had to leave for personal reasons. This new teacher came it. He didn't care if you failed as long as you tried he would pass you. I still did horribly on homework, quizzes and tests but he would tell me "don't worry I'll pass you". Well he was only temporary and was replaced by another teacher who was permanent. I think her name was Ms. Aiken. I got use to sliding by. But Ms. Aiken didn't put up with any BS. The first quiz I failed she called my parents and told them I needed help. She said she would be happy to stay after school to help me everyday for as long as it took to get me on track. Short story is I became obsessed with Algebra. I had been a failing student. I became an "A+" student in her class. She actually TAUGHT me. She's probably the best math teacher I ever had. Teachers like that are hard to come by but I will always remember her.

Thing is, a lot of countries teach calculus as part of the curriculum. Bolivia did so, as well, from memory. He knew he could teach it because he and his classmates had learned the subject. What people don't realize is that Escalante received not only a math degree, but physics, as well. He knew how the calculus worked with the sciences. That's why his student were WAY ahead of all other schools in SoCal. He taught his students the "why" of mathematics...

I feel his efforts led to the overall uplifting of the school in time... by the time I got there, we had other AP programs going (I was not in Calculus, but took 4 AP classes as well as Honors) as well as being the ONLY Inner City school in LAUSD that was performing well and competing against the top tier schools at the Academic Decathlon/Super Quiz.

Finally I ended up dropping out of school entirely and took a ton of trades for electrical work, vehicle mechanics and some welding. I now have my own business and enough money put away to retire at the age of 40. The point I'm trying to make is that there are people who just aren't cut out for bookwork, we're better with our hands and getting dirty in a shop than behind a desk with a pencil. The school system should embrace this more instead of trying to force students to do everything the same.

Makes more sense. Without a solid foundation in algebra, calculus is very difficult to learn the exercises since you struggle with just algebraic topics that you should've known before you got there. And it's not like these students learn math in a vacuum, they have other subject areas in school and their own lives to deal with.

Teaching can be a cherry job. Only work 9 months a year, all holidays off, m-f day shift only, unionized tenure, civil retirement system. Don't make the job harder any more than it need to be. Just show up, work the minimum, then go home. Repeat year after year. Someone like Escalante coming in to rock the boat makes these teachers get very upset.

I do mathematical analysis and something like that is what you do after calculus. What it is, is essentially rigorously proving the intuitive calculus that was previously learned or if you’re working in the complex universe, you would do complex analysis, which is basically working with the imaginary “i” in the calculus.

Now we know why they considered Mr. Escalante's request a joke: some of the teachers themselves can't do the courses, they don't have the books, the kids never even tried it before so automatically cannot pull it off. As a teacher myself, you know what I call those reasons? Lousy, lazy excuses.

That lady is the perfect representation of the participation trophy culture that exists in the American education system today. Mr Escalante represents the true American spirit is long lost in today's society. Most students have the potential to become someone meaningful in this world, they just need to be challenged and pushed to their limits to realize their full potential. Sadly we have more people like Raquel in schools that don't believe in this mentality and rather give out participation trophies instead which set up students for failure.

She is a not a teacher if she does not teach. I had heaps of teachers that only turned up for a pay check to baby sit the students and did not nothing about what they were teaching they just read out of a book the students would have been better off just reading out of the subject book themselves and filling out answers in it then reading at the back of the book if they got the answer correct that is how useless most people that call themselves teachers are.

It's money driven. The best teachers tend to be the ones who worked in the actual industry they are teaching, made plenty of money, and now teach because of the passion and not quibble over why certain duties don't dictate the measly pay they receive. Escalante here shows exactly that - he lives in a nice house in a great neighborhood that no new teacher could ever hope to even come close to affording.

Self confidence is meaningless without skills/knowledge to back it up. It's why we in America tend to rank highest in confidence in our knowledge/skill but nowhere near the top in actual knowledge/skill
@Alpine913
@Alpine913 Год назад
There is also a sharp difference in accountability. In top performing countries in math, research shows kids in those cultures tend to consider the possibility that maybe their shortcomings were because they didn’t try, study, or asked for help. In America, kids expect it to be easy right away and if it isn’t, they give up and blame the teacher or subject. That was just one of the many things that made Escalante so incredible-he was able to shatter that mindset. That sometimes things are hard, and that doesn’t mean you’re dumb, it just means you need to work harder though.

My math teacher for algebra in 7th grade demolished me by making up stupid rules. She docked points on my math paper because I wrote my first and last name the wrong way. She made me redo whole homework assignments because she said my number 4s look like 9s. She would quickly write math on the overhead projector then take the sheet away before I could even write it down myself.....Her last name was Omen and she really was one. My older brother had her 5 years before me and just mentioning her name gave him chills...

Honestly...this move needs to be made today......today is so wrapped up in people being held back because of the bigotry of soft expectations....not just along racial lines as that quote originally addressed....but any kids who came from a hard back ground...or just struggle at school. Yes some people will be left beind.....but not cast aside......because if we have a system that leaves no one behind then we also have a system that pushes no one ahead. We should have high expectations and compassion for those who can not meet them........not a compassion that keeps them from expectations. That is a compassion that causes more harm than benefit.

Ironically soft racism is exactly what these kids face in this movie. The woman who doesn't believe in them, because "these kids aren't the kind that can bounce back". "These kids cant.... x, y, z". That she never wanted to give them the chance to show what they COULD do. To hold them accountable for themselves and give them the opportunity to be their best selves. And when they soar, they face more racism, because there is no way this school was able to do this. right? Money does solve a lot of problems, but so does actually believing in your students, and having families that believe in them to, but also holds them accountable to when they don't. To many parents "why are you giving my son an F, your son earned an F ma'am, I gave him the tools and the road map to get an A, he chose to not use them."

Math teacher here. Depends on what you mean by 'teaching calculus'. It's not at all difficult to teach moving a few numbers around. It's much harder to understand what it is you're doing. The derivative of x^3 is 3x^2, for example. Just take the three, put it in front, and subtract one from the exponent. Easy as pie. Anyone can do that. But WHY? Explain the implications related to rates of change. Really wrapping your mind around that is what I would actually call "learning calculus", and that's much harder.
