UPDATE May 2023: I just ordered a standalone Push 3 folks. No they did not send me one. It hurt my bank account just like it will hurt yours and I can and will therefore be 100% honest once I test this thing out. I have high hopes, this thing might just work, which would be a big development!

Didn’t know that drum simulators are doing that level computing in order to simulate authentic acoustic drumming. Very interesting. Thanks for the explanation of the tech an how it affects the tools we’re opting and able to use. This is insightful.

Hey, Robert. I just want to thank you for creating such uniquely helpful content. I'm a guitarist who has struggled to find a way to make electronic drums playable for myself, but thanks to your videos I'm having some real breakthroughs. You're two handed alternating approach appears to be to unique to you, and it is allowing me to play expressively. You're gear reviews have led me to a relatively inexpensive setup that I'm soooooo happy with the results of (Nektar Aura, Addictive Drums 2) If I could make one request it would be for more videos on classic beats and recreating the feel from specific songs. For instance, a video like your Funky Drummer lesson on the Purdie Shuffle would be amazing! Thanks again and please keep up the great work!

I recently became a patron, and wanted you to know that these YT videos are what drove me to your site, and eventually to a subscription. Even simple videos, "fluff" if you will, can be powerful in driving traffic. It's a fine line to walk between quality and quantity, but I think it's beneficial to keep showing your face. I hope your business really takes off for you.

Wow! Brother I got on the mpc one for making instrumentals, and it works great for making beats. One pleasant surprise was the pads. They just call for me to play them, it’s amazing is weird is really beautiful. The playability is just wonderful on the mpc one. So I very recently got more passionate about finger drumming. Really appreciate your videos

A laptop and a controller together take up about the same space as a lonely snare drum, and provide endless options. OK, add external audio interface. Much more portable and flexible than a whole kit. Nonetheless, good video that may trigger a higher end product.
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 4 года назад
Yeah thats true as well. I think its mostly the whole "stability" thing where an audio hiccup would mess things up pretty bad and on the other end the fact that I'd be nervous to have my expensive macbook laying there on stage. Some sort of solid box that just works feels nicer in those situations. But... this is an extremely first world problem for people like me who don't have real problems :-) I have to admit that much :-)

Hi Robert, I've really been enjoying your videos this week. Your channel has been a bit of a rabbit hole for me , since I got a Launchkey X and set up the drums as per your video. Having a blast. But spookily i have just watched this video this morning and thought wow what an insight about mobile chips in drum pads and what that would mean in the future (exciting I thought and even more of a reason to practice finger drumming) and then Lo and Behold . Ableton Push 3 is released like 3 hours ago and it is exactly the thing you predicted in this video (2 years ago), well done on that.....I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Push 3 . Erg bedankt voor de geweldig videos van een Ier die in Rotterdam woont. God Bless!

Hey Danielo, I woke up and got an email saying Ableton just released the Push 3. I'm not amongst the "influencers" who got one early, but I actually bought one *today*. I have high hopes. There are some pitfalls that they might have stumbled into, like the way the new pad sensor works. If that works the same as the LinnStrument it might be not that great for short percussive hits actually... I really really hope they did not mess that up.

It sounds like the MPC Live isn't too far off from what you want. My understanding is you can have it cycle through samples for the same pad or have different velocity layers, the problem is you can't do both at the same time (and I think you're limited to just 4 velocity layers right now). Still, it doesn't seem like the current hardware is too far off from having at least an approximation to what you're looking for.
@TheQuestforGroove

Yeah that's true. I heard Fickus Beats talking about that as well. He was working on it but didnt really push it through it seems. For me it might be a solution if id be on the road a lot and im not playing very subtle music. Otherwise it feels wrong to pay quite a lot of money for a "lesser" version of my laptop midi controller combo. We're getting there though. I mean, i remember the days I wasnt able to use a loptop but needed a tower :-)

Machine + has multi sampled Kontakt kits built into it. The Abbey Road Kit and a couple other ones. Im not sure how many velocity layers and round Robbins there are in those Kontakt kits, but I’d imagine with it being Kontakt they’re probably pretty good.

I tried the Maschine + and while there is a chance that I never completely understood how to use it, I was pretty underwhelmed. My experience with the MPC live was that I had to go into the options menu and set the sensitiviy of the pads to one point above the most sensitive setting. Then it responded great. Most sensitive setting caused an insane amount of false triggers but the one above that was very nice. Maybe they messed it up with the newer MPC Live devices now as well? Sure hope not...

Honestly the mobility aspect of everything could become a moot point if akai and native instruments could stop creating a disparity in pad sensitivity or quality control in their pad controller only devices. Everyone simply opts to buy the larger units with the hopes that if they throw more money they can save heartache. If there were a maschine with the same pad sensitivity as the mk3 and the size of the mpd218 I believe few people would want a live 2 or maschine plus specifically for finger drumming.

Giuliano Pierrot games don’t rely heavily on virtual memory. Especially console games. Both the maschine and mpc rely on storing sampling & different synth phases solely on vmemory. Games rely on 2 different processors cpu & gpu. 2 totally different worlds. Also, in order to get that type of functionality. Companies would need way bigger specs and standalone units would essentially cost more. The maschine + actually cost more your above average gaming laptop but has a quad core processor. Which logically makes sense seeing they need reconfigured specs and build quality would make it bigger. If you want plugins galore. You’re better off using the mk3 & a high spec laptop.
@KiloMegaGigaTerra94
@KiloMegaGigaTerra94 4 года назад
@@AveMcree I 100% agree with you. Some VSTs can hog 60-70% of a quad-core cpu with a few instances. Plus sample based virtual instruments do require a shit load of ram. As much as they occupy in an SSD/HDD. I wasn't sure if my compasion made sense haha. I guess what I wanted to say was I wish music equipment companies had the same RND and software teams as video game companies'. Though home music production as a hobby is way more popular now, I still think it's still a niche. It's hard not think that a lot more is possible if they maybe had bigger teams or a budget.

Hey, Rob-- I know exactly what you are talking about. Sadly, that is why I'm eventually going to get an E-drum kit and just learn to play drums-- unless before that time someone actually makes a finger drum pad module exactly the way you are talking about. I can't actually get a full acoustic drum set, due to not having a sound isolated live room, so I have to just use Maschine mkIII in combination with Superior Drummer pre-made midis for parts I can't finger drum. Eventually, I would like to go full scale to an e-drum kit with a decent drum module. Though I am not a fan of the Roland drum module sounds, I do like the new acoustic look to VAD 506 kit. Maybe the Roland kit with the Pearl Mimic Pro module-- it has Steven Slate Drums built in to it. Though that is a steep price tag. Maybe it will just be easier for me to hire a session drummer eventually once I get the budget to do so... lol. This music business is expensive.
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 4 года назад
Hey Shayne, I just got this advice from someone else in the comments to look into the 2box drum module. Im not sure yet at this point but it might very well be possible to use the midi in port with a midi controller and then you basically have yourself an e-drum module hooked up to the pads... not cheap though. All of those boxes cost quite some money.

@TheQuestforGroove

Its a bit sneaky, but I believe it can only run "Kontakt factory select". That's a stripped down version of kontakt 6 that comes with the unit and you cannot install the full kontakt on there and then load custom libraries in. Its a bit deceptive but from what I read about the device thats what it does. It runs a select amount of plugins and instruments and you cannot just install your own, not even if they're kontakt based.

Sorry but VSTI are samplers with different layer exactly like MPC one is a sampler plus you can have multi layering too! I bought an mpc expansion of an accoustic drum kit years ago with 16 layers www.mpc-samples.com/product.php/296/mpc-drummer-acoustic-drum-kit-bundle/633741904b3b199b849738205043c4f4 its pretty solid but i prefer AD2 or SD3 since i use specific articulations... But if you want AD2 drums sound and all the layer/playability you can simply buy a 2box module and you're done (i bought one and i 'll receive it this week :) they already converted some AD2 kits with some specific software if you don't do the job manually ;) Also they have very good sounding stock sound in the module and some user have made new one like these one: endre-enerd.com/index.php/tech-info/sounds Maschine+ also have built-in drumsynth buit in so its not my cup of tea like you ^^ but well its good to mention it.
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 4 года назад
This is very interesting. - So to my understanding you cannot actually do with the MPC live what you can do with AD2. It has 4 velocity layers or cycling through samples but it does not do both at the same time and it also does not round robin the sounds correct? So you can get something that's more lifelike but not the same thing. Please correct me if I'm wrong. - Can you let me know if the 2box module works for you? That really looks like it might be a solution actually! Thanks again for this and keep me posted!

@@TheQuestforGroove i have edited my message dunno if you have checked the link but they say: 16 vélocity layers but i use them in mpc element software but apparently its compatible with others mpc so i dunno. I have just checked briefly and it seems only 8 layers on mpc so am confusing too.For round robin indeed i think it's correct. By the way in SD3 i often disable it when i need precision when working on a new groove and it sound also good because of all the layers involved. Also like i have already mentionned in a post i use my module from my DTX 400 entry level drumkit without latency and even if AD2 is better it's pretty good sounding and without latency. So i am pretty sure the 2 box 'll do the job because you can add any layer and it's round robin just check my links or 2box demo for the good stock kits but it's definitely a good solution for nomadism also can be battery powered since it desn't requier too much power consuption. I found one for 280 euros (the drumit five first one) the new ones have sd card accessible and 32 gb mine is 4gb and i need to open the module or to mod it for to access the sd card but behond that it's the same technology and sounds so yes it'll certainly do the job it's not the crappy/expensive Roland sound it's AD2 on a module baby! ^^ The new module (2 month old) is 790 euros you also have the complete drumkit (first one) on ebay for 700 or 800 euros or less. New modules aren't easy to found cause they love it i think ^^ 2box is from sweden they totally kills Roland imo here's their website 2box-drums.com/

I found my answer about that multi sample kit for MPC Live in the manual of how to install that kit :-). The manual says that they have multi-layer kits wit 4 velocity layers OR 'round robin' kits with 4 different articulations of the same velocity on 1 pad. So it's a bit of a 'light' version of what a AD2 does. I'm curious to hear if that D-Box just works by plugging in a midi controller. I tried it once years ago with some other machine (dont even remember which one) but that thing didn't respond because those e-drum kits speak somewhat of another language. If you get it to work I'll buy one too and make a video about it!

The SoundOnSound review of Maschine+ makes it seem like Kontakt libraries could be supported...? But hard to find any documentation on how to make this happen or other people doing it effectively - "Once you figure out how the library is structured a couple of sneaky (and unsupported) possibilities present themselves: bringing in Kontakt libraries and Reaktor patches. The former is only possible with unencrypted Kontakt presets; most commercial libraries secure the sample media in an archive that the Maschine+ can’t access. Kontakt libraries that do work get the benefit of disk streaming." - Please post if you find any good alternative solutions for standalone fingerdrumming like some of the ones mentioned below...desperate to avoid bringing a laptop, midi pad, and interface (with latency) just to jam with real instruments!

I didn't know that maschine as a standalone groovebox from NI actually can't run their acoustic drum libraries yet. Right, it can be annoying and I also hope they can manage to do it in future firmware update. As for mobile fingerdrumming, I have a question related a bit to your videos about pad controllers. Can you recommend any quite portable drumpad controller which can be used with mobile devices? I'm using my devices with a screenreader software and since I found out that ableton note app is fully accessible for screenreader users I started thinking about getting some kind of controller. I always wanted to have some pads anyway and now I have a new reason for that. I know that bluetooth devices always will have a bit of latency but it would be more for testing anyway and for easier sound auditioning. If I would like to put down some grooves without latency I suppose I'll connect a controller to my computer anyway. From wireless devices department I found only akai lpd-8 controller which you didn't recommend so I was wondering if you can recommend anything else? If there isn't anything good which has wireless connectivity option I would like to know about any good option for beginner. I would love to have maschine mk3 someday but for now I am looking for something simpler, only some decent pads which won't break the bank.

I personnally use 5 articulation and 2 buttons for open /close hi-hat pedal. 2 closed (tip& edge) and 2open and also the tigh closed. 4 buttons is enough imo i just like the sound of the tigh... It’ll be interesting to see how complex VSTs are to port to ARM. I’m an Apple platform developer and I can tell you this: if your app buys into Apple’s frameworks and APIs heavily, then porting is quite simple. This is the case for the vast majority of Mac and iOS apps. However, VSTs are kind of an odd beast, often written outside of the platform APIs for cross-platform capability. I’ve never built a VST so I don’t have a lot of understand here. Certainly it’ll be possible to port VSTs to Apple Silicon, but it will likely be more work than porting most other types of apps (games, by the way, are similar to VSTs...often not written against Apple’s platform APIs...so they, too, may be more complex to support). Clearly, music apps/plugins that are already running on iOS (for example, the FabFilter suite) will have a massive head start. Are there any great acoustic drum sampling apps with round robins and such on iOS already? If so, they are likely the first ones you’ll see on Macs with Apple Silicon.

Hi Robert, Abbey Road Drums inside of Maschine+ would be sweet :) As for plugins outside of de NI ecosystem (like AD2), I suppose this mostly depends of the will of this companies to code and port their plugins to be able to run inside the M+ right? At the end it all comes down to economics, and how profitable it would be to write or adapt the code for M+. Since mostly likely, NI will port Abbey Road (even if it’s in 2 years time), it might not be profitable to AD to do it. I don’t see why NI would block other companies to port their plugins to M+. More plugins, more happy customers, more possibilities = more sales xD

I do it sometimes to start a new "chapter" of the video. But in this video its a bit weird because I cut back at the wrong moments... it does have a function if you're talking about apples and then you switch to talking about oranges you create this cut to 'reset'. But here I should have left it as it was. Its not a video for cutting like that actually.

Hi Quest, I know this is not relevant to this video, but have you experienced the Digi fighter style of arcade button controller? I am concerned about the wear on my finger joints using regular pads and wonder if the arcade style buttons can help with that. Also, do they serve finger drumming well?
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 4 года назад
It looks like a fun machine, but its not velocity sensitive. So no difference between soft or loud hits. That takes away a lot of possibilities compared to the controllers I play. That said, risk of injury is always a thing. I personally prefer my maschine mk3 because of the responsiveness of the pads. I never hit them with much force. On top of that I hardly ever play for more than an hour a day and not every day of the week. On top of that I exercise and stay in good shape. All of those things are important... much more than you'd think but playing music at a high level is like sports. So be careful out there and take care of yourself and your hands!
@TheQuestforGroove

Oh and one more thing: I use a standing desk at the perfect hight for my arms so that my wrists can stay perfectly straight with just small movements needed to hit the pads. Another important one

I have a practice pad which I've been using to learn rudimentals on, but this looks like an easy and affordable option to dig a bit deeper. Cheers!
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 4 года назад
The answer is yes! I'm a guitar player myself and over the past couple of years I've gotten so much better at timing and groove then I ever did on guitar (and I did practice rhythm on guitar and was even considered the guy with the "good timing" back then). Its important you get a computer and audio interface with very low latency so that will not mess up your groove, but besides that working on your rhythm while finger drumming is a great way to do things. The nice thing about a pad controller is that its basically a human groove connection between your hands and the computer. It will churn out midi notes exactly as you play them and then you an use those notes for drums but you can even use them as a "grid" to quantize other parts to. I do that sometimes when correcting sloppy playing of other musicians i record. Tap along and then sync their part to mine. Its a really nice tool in the studio!

Well, the maschine+ can do that which you describe... I actually tried one out this week but I personaly couldn't shake the feeling that for $1300 I could buy a macbook air and a Maschine mikro mk3 and I would have so much more. You can also check out the novation circuit rhythm if all you need is punching in some beats. A lot cheaper and also standalone. The problem with that thing is that it only has two rows of playable pads so you cannot use the 4x4 layout I always recommend.

Thank you for this video, it was very interesting. I didn't know that even if I used to use AD. What do you think about having maschine+, mpc live II or a Roland mv-1 for practicing away from the computer? The sounds would be less realistic but would it change something on the finger drumming learning process? Is it an issue to learn finger drumming with samples? Would I learn bad habits? Also, I'm wondering if a hack with a raspberry pie with AD on it with and connected to a pad controler could resolve this problem.
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 3 года назад
I think you'll be fine practicing on a Maschine + when you're away from the computer. Just focus on timing and making it groove, and maybe also still try to make a difference between hitting loud and soft. I mean, the samples will sound softer or louder based on how hard you hit, they will just not change the sample, but you can still practice hitting dynamically. On the other hand, when away from the computer I just drum on my lap, or anything I can tap on. Works great for getting control over my hands and then I can take it to the computer later. A lot cheaper than a maschine + :-)

@@TheQuestforGroove Thanks a lot for your answer. It's crazy that a simple lightweight finger drumming practice pad with a few drum sounds doesn't exist yet. I'd be so interested to have something to practice in a compact format. Something like an instrument. Maybe it's too much of a niche. Finger drumming is so convenient that I am amazed that people are not more invested in this practice. Maybe also because people are more invested in programming beats than in performance.

Hey can you make a video about the difference between a traditional launchpad which has 64 keys vs pad controllers which has 16 keys??
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 4 года назад
I might do that in the near future! For now I think you should keep this rule in mind: If you dont know what youre going to do with 64 pads and you basically just want to play drums, get a 4x4 (and I can recommend the Mikro mk3 as great value for money). If you have plans for 64 pads, like playing melodies or very complicated things like drums and a bassline together, get a Launchpad pro mk3. But just for drums you'd make it a bit harder for yourself. More pads also means less oversight and more complexity and I found I hardly ever really need more than 16 pads to churn out really nice groovy beats.

@@TheQuestforGroove I am actually a guitarist who desires to be a music producer someday. So as a 3rd world citizen things are very expensive here. The akai mpd 218 that you call cheap is near 350 dollars here so i am looking for a all in one kinda solution. Ah i see, in that case I think a launchpad is a very good investment!! I've been learning about exchange rates and stuff like that since I started this international endeavor and it's extremely unfair. It's also a hard problem to solve. I ask a "small" fee for some premium courses of $10 a month. That's actually a lot of money in some countries, but then at the same time my rent here in Amsterdam is $1300 a month! So asking less than $10 while living in a 'first world's country does not get me anywhere and forces me to work a full time job not having any time left to make videos... I truly hope this problem will become less bad in our lifetime. Keep on rocking brother!!!

No, as I say in the video the MPC Live (I or II) and Maschine + are not a drumkit in a box, nor do they have the possibility to run a plugin that does this. So for that purpose (where you get these realistic drum sounds, multiple velocity layers, round robin samples so no two hits sound exactly the same) you still will need to use a laptop and a vst plugin or something. No true standalone options available in that department.

Apple’s ARM chips are every bit as powerful as x86 chips, and with better performance per watt. There is no reason at all ARM chips can’t run the hungriest of VSTs. There will be some transition time for software developers to port their VSTs to the new platform, but there is zero technical reason why every VST on the market today can’t run on Apple Silicon, whether that’s in a Mac or iOS device.

No VST support. (Yet) Grrr...I won’t even look at a Maschine+ until they allow for that... That being said, while there is no round robin in Maschine’s sampler, there is definitely full capacity for beautifully refined multi-sampling! most of my Maschine sampler kits, and all the ones I make myself are VERY MUCH multi-sampled. Not only that, but you can layer multiple samples per velocity zone and note..so you can have two instruments which are multi sampled in one sampler instance! And not only that, you can use Maschine’s sample-recording function to sample your favorite VST at it’s various velocities and create a sampler instrument that sounds exactly the same. I used to do this with my synths when my old Mac was too slow to run multiple instances of soft synths.

Hey man you got marked as spam by youtube so im only seeing this comment now. What im saying is yes, plugin manufacturers will have a bigger incentive to make their software run on arm based chips. Basically, when they port their software over to the new macs, they will instantly have an ipad/iphone version ready as well. My expectation is when the processing power of iphones and ipads goes up a little more and theyve been working on making their stuff work on the new macbooks, all of them will from that point on be on board with the more mobile solutions as well. Its an expectation, but to me it seems where were headed. And sure, you can do things already with for example fabfilter plugins optimized for ipad, but its going to be different when theres no fundamental differencr at all anymore between an ipad pro and a laptop. That whole thing of using the computer for the 'real' stuff will be gone then and youll have all the real stuff in your pocket!
