Shame about the colour there, but it is what it is. I agree with you, though, that despite getting 'finished', if you end up not liking it, you might as well start again. It would only stick out like sore thumb! I like the high-grade spongy sanding sticks from GreenStuffWorld (comes in a small packet of 20 sticks at grade 800, 1200, 2000 and 2500 x 5 each) and a bit of steel wool on the rougher areas, but as you say, there's a fine line between doing it properly and overdoing it. Your final, final looks sweet and nicely 'in period'.
