Sitting is killing workers & developers! Sitting is being called "the new cancer" and "the smoking of our generation"
Check out "The Level": bit.ly/1kCebu3
I recently got my hands on "The Level" by Fluidstance and it made me put together this review video that I've been wanting to do for a long time - concerning standing desks, developer health, balance boards and fluid movement throughout the day.
I'll do a review on the Fluidstance balance board for stand up desks. Standing desks are AWESOME. After using my standing desk for 6 months now, I will never go back. The only thing you find when using a standing desk is that your feet get fatigued and you can't stand all day. That's where the Fluidstance balance board comes in to play. It gives you an excellent range of motion.
As for standing desks, there's a great Ikea standing desk for $400, and relaxtheback.com also has a selection of desks ranging from several hundred to several thousand dollars.

There are definitely more affordable options out there. For the desk, especially if you work at home and are on a budget, Varidesk is the way to go. They've got several different configurations. Also look up Active Office Board from Fitter First. The foam blocks which you balance on are repositionable. You can't do the cool twisty thing, they have 12 different positions for the blocks that have different difficulty levels.

Good video. Re standing desk, ikea also does a manually adjustable desk. Same thing as the electric, you just get a small crank instead of 2 buttons. Less than half the price of the electric one though.

I've been using the Autonomous SmartDesk for about a month now. It's pretty solid and costs $50 less than the Ikea desk.

IKEA has a €200 euro sit stand desk, though it's height adjustment is with a manual crank, getting one really soon!

Have you considered comparing this to something like the Wurf board? I know it has a totally different feel and level of play, but I'm curious.

Being an extra budget minded student that wanted to get into a sit/stand desk I bought a Husky adjustable work bench from my local Home Depot for $200 (Model #HOLT46XDB12). It's a great entry level option for those that don't want to break the bank. I think it looks and works great.

I hear ya about the whole sitting thing! I used to be a Sourcing Recruiter (aka professional stalker sitting in front of a computer) and now I code all day. I take yoga breaks to try to reverse the damage but lately I've been giving some serious thought about a stand up desk

Costco has a really nice electric standing desk with touch screen buttons and 4 position memory for only $300. You can go to either the costco store or to their online store. I've had it for over 2 years now. Best purchase ever!

+Russell Moore hey! Still loving it and use it every day. Some days I'll stand on it for 4 hrs, some only 1 or 2. What it does is allow me options for standing more where without it I would sit sooner.

Thanks for posting this. You inspired me to make the switch to a standing desk. I went with one from Varidesk.com that easily switches between standing and sitting. The change has been very beneficial. I have more energy throughout the day and my back doesn't hurt anymore. Thanks!

Since the Fluidstance has a hard surface, do you have to get extra squishy shoe soles?
@learncodeacademy
@learncodeacademy 8 лет назад
+Jason Land I've found that since the pressure doesn't hit the same place on your feet all day like a floor does that it's a lot longer till my feet feel fatigued. I thought about cutting up an anti-fatigue mat and velcro-ing it to the Fluidstance just to add extra comfort, but it's really not that necessary.

I've heard of how sitting is bad for health few months ago and wanted to do something about it. I didn't have a budget for a standing desk or that board in the video. So I've built a web app that reminds to stand up and gives you some tips on what you can do during the breaks. You can find the app at bt.bitballoon.com. Just wanted to share with you who don't have a standing desk.

+Axo Sal Nice! My first standup desk was to take the top off of my existing desk and convert it like this: www.david-merrick.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/standingdesk.jpg just took about $15 of galvanized pipe (which Home Depot cut to size for me) plus a few $1 connectors. I still use it sometimes.

I have a question a little off the topic of ergonomics, but related to ADD, as you mentioned briefly... I find I have trouble focusing, and organizing my thoughts and materials. I wonder if you would consider making a video about your work environment, work flow, how you arrange your projects, and (I think most importantly) how to *stay focused* on a project without following every tangent you encounter :) ....thanks a lot and keep up the great work!

Why waste money on this? A skateboard does the same thing and more. That has got to be in the top 10 most stupid products ever created
@wsmac7
@wsmac7 8 лет назад
+Nat Bradz Actually... having been a skateboarder and someone who has used a balance board at home... they are not the same thing. Balance boards have one point of contact with the roller/floor... skateboards - 4. Skateboards do roll laterally, and do lean heel-to-toe, but balance boards, in most cases, have many more degrees of movement. Now, a skateboard could be better than sitting at a desk all day, but it's not a waste of money to use a balance board... a bit more difficult to consistently maintain balance on one compared to a skateboard. I made my first board with an old skate deck and pvc pipe. Something like an Endo board is different because it's a larger surface than a skate deck.
@elevenz367
@elevenz367 8 лет назад
cool story bro seriously. At least you didn't go out and spend money on this overpriced plank of wood here. Maybe its not just a piece of wood but for the price he speaks about you'd have to either have more money than sense or be a moron to spend more than £50 on this thing.
@learncodeacademy
@learncodeacademy 8 лет назад
+Nat Bradz Funny you mentioned a skateboard...I actually used my globe longboard for a while, because it was the best I could find. While it's only $160 as opposed to $280, it is definitely NOT the same. You can only lean forwards and backwards instead of a full 360º sweep - so my feet still hurt after a few hours. Like I said, I still used it for quite a while, I called it my poor-man's fluidstance haha, fluidstance kicks it's butt for a standup desk board, though.
@elevenz367
@elevenz367 8 лет назад
If you could find a shallow bowl and attach it to your longboard would that not give you the 360 degree movement? something similar to this but shallower and more solid? goo.gl/YFR5e8
@wsmac7
@wsmac7 8 лет назад
Natz, money isn't the same for everyone. It's value depends on the pocket it resides in. While this commercial board may seem overpriced to you... and me... for some folks it beats them trying to take on a task they might not have the time, or skill set, to do themselves. I can strip down a bicycle, to include the wheel hubs, and rebuild it... saving me $40+/hr in labor. But while I might have the skill set, the tools, and the interest in doing it, others do not. Take something as simple as changing out an innertube on a bicycle wheel. . Those same people will gladly pay $10+ to have someone else remove the wheel, remove the tire, and install a brand new tube for them. I can do that in 5-10 minutes and save me that $10. . While you are someone who will spend the extra time to think of a different and possibly cheaper way to accomplish something, it's not worth the effort to someone who feels they have put in all their time/effort in making that money so they can spend it however they like... even if it is more extravagance than practical need. . I'm actually more like you in this respect, but I also allow that people can see value relative to their own little world, that does not reflect the way I see value... and cheer them on as they spend all that hard-earned money! Damn! Sorry.... got carried away here! lol You should build your own board, of your own design, to see if it really works. Then post it on a site like, Thingiverse, if you like to share. Now-a-days, people with your kind of ideas are called, "Makers". Have fun!
