Proxima b is the closest exoplanet to us there is. So then what is this planet like, and what would landing and standing onto this planet be like? In this video i discuss that.
I got the idea for the video by @JoReckless on twitter.
Intro,outro and other clips in the video were made with Space Engine.

Astronomers used to believe there were oceans and canals on Mars, even cities and possibly life. And Mars was only 40 million miles away.

IMO, if they send probes there; they should look at planets around the main two stars to since it's likely not going to have an atmosphere. It would be an ultimate disappointment if the planet turned out to be a hyper-giant asteroid. Try going to planets around those two planets as well, look for the more distant planets.

@@@jkl-me5qy Yes. Not sure if astronomers actually thought this, or if they just acknowledged it was possible and liked speculating. But people have always been projecting the known onto the unknown. We're still doing it now really. The Fermi Paradox, which isn't actually a paradox, is the same thinking on a grand scale. We have civilization here, ergo civilization should be the norm in the Universe. This is exactly the thinking that led people to think that the visible lava and flood channels on Mars were made by Martians. And if they have canals like we do they probably have cities. It took the Viking missions to get over this concept for good. But in the early days of modern astronomy people were indeed assuming that life was the norm. There would not only be Martians, but Mercurians, Jupiterians and Sun-dwellers. Obviously, since that was how it was here. Easy to fall into this trap until you know differently. And it makes sense too with the prevailing world view at the time, which was that things had a purpose. And what is the point of a giant-ass planet if no one is living on it? They were not as nihilistic and aimless as we are today.

@Fourthirteen82
@Fourthirteen82 4 года назад
@@mikoajh2747 there's a lot of "hardest part to Mars" including getting back, but also surviving radiation, how to keep people alive with limited room for food/water/oxygen (this isn't the ISS, and your people are a lot farther away as far as resupply missions), how being away for that long is going to affect the human body (astronauts right here on the ISS are pretty heavily affected by extended stays in orbit)... There's tons of shit we have to sort out besides just "how to get back." And if I remember correctly, our best estimate is a 2 year trip? 2 years of space travel, living on a planet with no real atmosphere, no way to just drop down and plant some potatoes... How long are we planning to stay on Mars as well? Is this a quick let's just set foot, stay a few hours and collect samples, then return? Or are we setting up some sort of base camp for future missions to use? If we are, are we guaranteed to land in that same spot and what's the benefit of that same spot versus landing somewhere else? I don't think you really thought this through much.

From the wiki: "Although it has a very low average luminosity, Proxima is a flare star that undergoes random dramatic increases in brightness because of magnetic activity.[20] The star's magnetic field is created by convection throughout the stellar body, and the resulting flare activity generates a total X-ray emission similar to that produced by the Sun." I have also heard it said that Proxima Centauri's x-ray output was high, but apparently some would beg to differ on that point. Did you do the math on the idea that Alpha A and Alpha B are bright/close enough to illuminate Proxima B? I have not done the math, but yours is the first claim I've heard along those lines so I'm curious if it might in fact be true. Presently Proxima is 1.94 trillion km away from the Alphas. If I'm not making a math error that is ~429 times farther from the Alphas to Proxima than Neptune is from Sol . Neptune is 30.1 AU (4.52 billion km) from Sol . . . 1.94 trillion divided by 0.00452 trillion is 429 right? Alpha A is 1.5 times brighter than sol but I don't think that is going to be more than just another distant flicker on Proxima b is it? The question of tidal locking and planetary climate, etc., are complex and depend on the nature of Proxima B's magnetosphere (if it has one) as well as the eccentricity of its orbit.
@sem_proximate5398
@sem_proximate5398 2 года назад
I know I'm replying to a 4 year old comment, but Proxima Centauri is ~13,000 AU away from the Alpha Centauri A/B binary system. It would not be illuminated by those stars.

That wouldn't work because if you could travel for 1 year at light speed you'd see 1 year back. You can't use this to see the past. What you're thinking of would be like overtaking the light from back then which is spreading out, but you can't do that. Are you talking about looking back in time? I don't know about football
@maximilianodelrio

Ricky Carter you can’t look back in time, if you started traveling now at light speed and looked back you would see what’s going on right now

@@circuit10 how do you not know football, and yet the person who put the original comment never specified what sport???

@@ataladin87 I know that Manchester United is a famous football team in the UK where I live, and that leagues are a football thing, but I haven't memorised the dates when every single team has ever won because I don't really like football

Yay I'm early haha another great video my man! I'd like a series on exoplanets ( or planets that are like earth but on another galaxy etc.) they fascinate me so much. And I feel as though we will discover more exoplanets in the next 20 years or so. I hope man can create something that can travel at the speed of light one day and take humans with them.

Great quality video. It’s nice to visualize what we’d assume these things to be like with current knowledge. I can’t wait for sequels once we find the inevitable corrections. Not hating I really want to see how this evolves.

Interestingly Proxima B was only discovered three years ago so would there be a possibility that there's a star even closer to earth but has yet to be discovered?
