The Clinical Challenges of Kawasaki Disease (With Some Thoughts on COVID-19)

Session Description
This session will cover historical aspects of Kawasaki disease, and the ongoing enigma related to its etiology. A complex clinical case will be presented with guidance as to clinical management, including diagnosis, acute treatment and long-term management of coronary artery complications. Further, the relationship of Kawasaki disease to the delayed multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with SAR-CoV-2 infection will be discussed.
Education Goals
To understand the complex etiological working model of Kawasaki disease
To be able to diagnose Kawasaki disease, even in the presence of incomplete clinical criteria
To be able to acutely manage Kawasaki disease, including patients resistant to initial treatment
To understand the pathology driving long-term outcomes, and strategies to prevent them
