So in my latest video lesson I take a look at the EPIC track "Song to John" Pt.2 by the bass legend, Mr. Stanley Clarke -one of my absolute earliest influences on the bass. We'll look at two classic licks and also a brief discussion of the Lydian harmony present in the amazing melody and parts of Stanley's solo lines too.

Stanley is so ridiculously good, I feel like he almost gets less credit than he deserves just because jaco showed up at about the same time and blew everyone away.

I say the same thing. It's all about Jaco and Stanley. Stanley was known in Early 1970's playing with Corea, Getz etc. Along with Stanley Early Solo Albums. Once Jaco came on scene in 1976, Everyone forgot about Stanley...

I don’t agree. Larry Graham, Stanley, Jaco. They each did unprecedented things with the bass. Graham slapping. Stanley, thumping in a jazz funk manner, upright, composition and Jaco fretless, compositions and playing changes. After 77 Stanley started moving into TV and Movie composition. Also, he was and is a mainstream star with songs on the radio. Everyone brings something different to the party.

Always loved this album and of course "Modern Man". Sure wish I had the opening chord changes to the tune following "Song to John pt.2" "Concerto for JaZz Rock Orchestra". Not sure but I seem to recall the late George Duke or Stanley himself on piano. This post was very informative. Thx 🙏

Amazing analysis and tutorial!!!! I really like your teaching style and am very impressed that you can articulate everything that's happening!!! I haven't seen very many bass instructors do this!!! Journey to Love is an INCREDIBLE RECORDING!!! My favorite Stanley Clarke song, "Concerto for Jazz/Rock Orchestra" is on that project!!!! David Sancious, one of the most underrated and underappreciated musicians on the planet, plays one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard, and the overall musicianship by everyone is mind-blowing!!! Stanley is one of a handful of virtuosos on both electric and upright bass!!!

Thanks Keith! Agreed! Every tune on this record is awe inspiring. Even as a 15 yeard old, I felt this was a very special recording...It feels like a suite, and at the conclusion I truly feel like the music transported me on a complete journey.VERY few recording do this for me...

I FIRST GOT STUNG BY 1 of YOUR BASS lessons on SBL. how to play a jazz blues in a few simple steps.😮 I dug it and then my negligence kicked in😢. now I'm digging on this lesson Stanley Clarke Journey To Love album which I own. I discovered Stanley Clarke, along with Chick, Al, and Lenny here - "Return To Forever - The Old Grey Whistle Test (1976)". I was 19 going from Rock Blues to Funk at this stage ... Was I WoW'ed or what ? A fascinating analysis Rufus. And a Sweet tone on that bass as well. May I ask which strings you're using there ? (type and make please) Lively flats it sounds like to me.

Stanley is my hero, emotionally he hits me more then Jaco. Most will say that Jaco was more melodic but when you really delve into Stanley's catalogue you'll discover some really great melodic stuff. E.g. listen to " East RIver Drive" (incredible piccolo solo!) or the theme from Boys in the Hood, they're stellar examples of Stanley's melodicism.

Agree. Apart from the classic 70's albums, I really thought Stanley's piccolo soloing on the Clarke/Duke Project and also his bass grooves and soloing ( inc. that great duet w/ Louis Johnson) on "Time Exposure" is superb. They also sound KILLER on LP. Mastering by Allan Zentz on the latter as i recall..

@@rufusbass Yes! " Time Exposure" I have that one on vinyl also. I really love Stanley's piccolo solo on the tune Time Exposure where the guitar parts are played by Jeff Beck.

No I can hear that too it seems like they borrowed it from Stanley because this album was released aroud 1977 78 . So the melody you hear yes is leaning towards the Simpsons. But Stanley had it way before😊

Sounds like The Simpsons theme. Anyway, I've just started to seriously get into bass the past couple years and haven't dived into Stanley Clarke yet. I'll have to remedy that. As someone who has listened to a bit of Chick Corea, this immediately identifies itself as a Chick Corea composition.
