Stanley Clarke is a badass musician. He may well be one of the best bass players in the world. What else needs said?

I'd like to see you react to Stanley Clarke's Rock n Roll Jelly from his Modern Man album. Jeff Beck on guitar. I used to shake the walls of the house with that song as a teenager.

Nice to see Stanley Clarke featured on the channel. Speaking as someone who struggled to play the bass for many years, I had to have a few of his albums in my collection. My earliest of his is, " Modern Man" (1978) which also features Jeff Beck. Love the shirt !

I discovered the fusion movement in the early 80's and was floored by Stanley Clarke. On his self titled album he plays a double bass like a flamenco guitar. I don't think I've heard anybody else do that. ASTONISHING!!!

Was lucky enough to see Stanley Clarke while on a business trip to Charlotte NC back in the late 90's. He was playing at the Ovens Auditorium with Lenny White on drums, Steve Carlton on guitar and Jeff Lorber on keyboards. They played this song, great show and amazing musicianship.

I really like the early solo albums from Stanley Clarke ("Stanley Clarke' and 'Journey to Love'). Some suggestions for a 'first reaction': Vulcan Princess / Yesterday Princess, Lopsy Lu, Journey to Love, Hello Jeff (featuring Jeff Beck on the last 2 tracks).

Also see the next track "Quiet Afternoon" featuring David Sancious on mini-moog, "Desert Song" with John McLaughlin on acoustic gtr.. His previous album, Journey To Love, has David Sancious, John McLaughlin, and Jeff Beck on guitars, Chick Corea and George Duke (Zappa) on keys, and S.Gadd and Lenny White on drums. The album before that, 1974's Stanley Clarke, has Bill Connors on guitar, Jan Hammer on keys, and Tony Williams on drums. You were probably thinking of the Benson song "On Broadway".

Wow, that's a good surprise. Although I'm not very familiar with S Clarke (but I've seen him live 3 years ago), as a bass player, I love this tune.Maybe one of the best bass instrumental if not THE best. I suppose someone else said it: but the intro riff is played on the bass too.
@thomassharmer7127

Very impressive and very enjoyable. He keeps it very melodic and riffy, as well as going off on all those improvised extensions. The technical mastery never overpowers but always serves the highly infectious groove. An extended drum and bass jazz-funk-fusion instrumental that manages to be poppy and boppy too. (I think you'd also enjoy Level 42, a great 80s pop band with virtuoso slap bass from Mark King.)

I always like how this song reminds me of my rambling days. One of the keyboardists, David Sancious, makes a showing on this. He also played on another of my favorite albums, Bruce Springsteen's The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle (1973). I always like his classical & jazz piano on "New York City Serenade".

I love it! It's funky and it rocks, the bass rules, and it's a masterclass in how to riff on a simple theme. I wish Zappa had cut loose like these guys more often, then I might like more than about 14% of his discography...

In a nutshell, I adore this track/album. I first saw a live version of this on the BBC, and i'd never seen bass played this way before. Call me naive, but chords on a bass... who knew. Gobsmacked, I run out the next day and bought my first bass, and the album. An LP worth sticking with JP. * and/or, from another of his albums. Journey to Love, may i highly recommend 'Concerto for Jazz/rock Orchestra, Parts 1 - 4'. About 15mins long, maybe one for a Saturday playing.

Love this stuff.Thanks JP. I still hope you'll get a chance to listen to some ANIMAL LOGIC sometime (their albums were just "one" and "two"). That was Stanley Clarke, Stewart Copeland and a great singer/songwriter. Deborah Holland. Though there wasn't a lot of it, and it was more on the pop rock, commercial side, their music was pretty great. Deborah had an amazing voice. I think you'd dig it. "There's a spy in the house of love" was their original single. "If I could do it over again" is a fun jam.

Bought this back in the 70s on vinyl, but it's not an album I played a lot and it's been gathering dust for 40 years. The bass riff reminds me of the Banana Splits TV show theme from the 60s. I prefer his eponymous album from 1974.

The shirt is nice. Aside from that, I'm very disappointed in your refusal to have Leon Russell on the channel. All these years and the countless opportunities you've had to check out Leon have left me befuddled. Please rectify this situation. Stanley Clarke makes think about Chick Corea. 🎹
