Maloney's stick was not over his shoulder when he scored that tying goal vs. the Islanders. At best, replays showed it was inconclusive. Even Mike Bossy admitted that. Therefore, the ref made the right call.
The hit on Ulfie was very clean. Nothing wrong at all with that hit. If it was over the shoulder, it wasn't conclusive. From one angle I'd lean towards yes, from the other I'd lean towards no. And since there was no replay at the time, they had to allow the goal. For us Ranger fans, it was a cruel tease. It was the best rivalry I've ever seen.
Yeah, it was a good goal. I've been away from NY a long time and just wanted to give a little grief to a Ranger fan. i was at many of those games, most in the coliseum but a few in the Garden. Who could have imagined back then there would be such a thing as RU-vid where you could pull up a lot of those great moments. Go Rangers!
Daniel Zanier ah yes it was, there is no debate on this, it was an illegal goal you sack of shit ranger fan. One cup in 80 years, get the fuck out of here.
After the cup in 84, i was with a friend in Huntington(NY) and bumped into Brent Sutter... i was wearing my Oilers pin and i thought dude was gonna whoop my ass!
You think that was bad? I became an Islander fan in 1978 when they played their hearts out and lost Game 7 to Toronto in the Quarterfinals. I lived in MANHATTAN. That was one intense rivalry.
@@ziggymorris8760 I lived it from day 1 and I always thought the fights in the stands and outside the building were more intense when at Nassau. Half the building was Ranger fans so it lead to alot of animosity before during and after the game.
@@ziggymorris8760 it is funny how all the kids were suddenly wearing Ranger jerseys after they broke the 1940 jinx. All my friends were Islander fans but those days were fun.
Unreal that tying goal vs the Isles in 1984 was allowed to count. it was a clear high stick. Can you imagine if the Rangers won in OT and the Isles dynasty ended on a bad call. I'm not sure if back then it was shoulder or crossbar...regardless it was over both his shoulder when he made contact and the crossbar
One great run come to a end and one just got start. Two greater teams I am oilers fun but I tell you those Islanders were amazing team the last team to win 4 straight cups and 5 straight finals not even the great Edmonton oilers teams could even do that.
@@mukinmukin6352 W R O N G 👎🏻...I had a season ticket then. We put ourselves in a position to lose the series that day, including about 10 minutes left in the game, to rectify the score.
Again, had a season ticket at the time & was at the game when we dethroned the great, Islander Dynasty. The Oilers could’ve won 1️⃣0️⃣ Stanley Cups, but their initial inexperience, egos & especially a financially challenged, Peter Pocklington, caused the premature, dismantling of a MONSTER. Our last Cup was 1990, yet the NY Oiler 7️⃣, won it in ‘9️⃣3️⃣. Seven former Oilers, including captain, Mark Messier & GM, Glen Sather. 🇨🇦
As an Islander fan, this is really hard to watch. Winning Game 1, which they could have, things could have been different. But even if that were the case, you could see the team wearing down, they trailed in every series, and they almost lost Vs. the Rangers and Canadiens, then did lose to Edmonton. I know a lot of fellow Islander fans complain about the 2-3-2 format, but I don't think it would have mattered. As they say, you're not in trouble until you lose a home game. The Islanders did and did right away. It was Edmonton's time. I hate it, but that's the reality.
Jason ... As I became a hockey fan, the Islanders were my team to hope for. The Islanders beat a few of my favourite teams to win their cups; but I rejoiced every time time they beat Edmonton, whom I despise, and would like to call Deadmonton if I choose a name -- not the city, but that team(!)!!
The 2-3-2 format was a joke. Firstly home ice advantage always went to the team with the most points. The Oilers finished first overall that year and should have had home ice advantage fans forget that
The NHL changed the finals format from 2-2-1-1-1 to 2-3-2 because they didn't want the Islanders matching the Canadiens run. Don't forget the Oilers won because they had 3 straight games at home. Then they changed the format back.
why were there 3 straight games in Edmonton?? the playoff format was changed from 2-2-1-1-1 to 2-3-2--Mike Bossy has said that it is very likely the Islanders would have come back and won this series if they hadn't changed the playoff format
@@chrisruth7057 Win Game 1 at home and you don't have to worry about being closed out in Edmonton. Isles didn't take care of business and their pussy fans cry to this day HAHAHAH
I was at that game…didn’t even have my own seat, sharing my season ticket with my mother & it was her turn to go. Made a deal with an usher, prior to the game…he was working a gate at the doors, slipping him a $20.00. When we won the Cup & people jumped on the ice, I was literally standing between both teams benches, at centre ice. 🇨🇦
16:34 McClelland played for the pre-Mario Penguins. Had to be depressing. Incredibly, the two worst teams in the NHL in '83-'84 were in the same division; don't forget the "MIckey Mouse" Devils (as they were called by The Great One).
Received a Bryon Trottier signed wooden stick in the early 80s when the islanders came to a father and son night at my school. I then used it to play hockey. Should have preserved it, but it was a lot of fun meeting a lot of the players.
From 1982-1985, the NHL had a unique playoff format. Home-ice advantage in the Conference Finals was determined by which division had a better regular season head-to-head record in games within the conference (Adams teams vs. Patrick teams for the Wales, Norris teams vs. Smythe teams for the Campbell) Home ice in the Stanley Cup Final was determined by which conference had a better regular season head-to-head record in games within the league (Campbell teams vs. Wales teams). Here are the times that it affected the playoffs unfairly: Chicago (72 pts) had home ice vs. Vancouver (77 pts) in the 1982 Campbell Final Montreal (75 pts) had home ice vs. NY Islanders (104 pts) in the 1984 Wales Final NY Islanders (104 pts) had home ice vs. Edmonton (119 pts) in the 1984 Cup Final Quebec (91 pts) had home ice vs. Philadelphia (113 pts) in the 1985 Wales Final
The Islanders should have won Game 1. I think even with the Oilers winning Games 3, 4, and 5 at home, the Islanders would have won Games 6 and 7 at home. I really don't think the Islanders would have lost in front of their home crowd with the Cup on the line. Oh well.
Hahaha, These compilations are great, shows how they got there. What’s, with all the belly-aching/moaning about 2-2-1-1-1 format. Y’all, ought to keep in mind 83-84 special year, gretzky’s 87 goals in 74 games, sidelined or he could’ve had 💯. Oilers, wasn’t going to be denied the cup.
i think a case could of been made for grant fuhr winning the mvp (conn smythe) just on his game 1 shut out. alone. thats how great he played in that game.if isles win game 1 they most likely win the series
