@@DJ_Mooster I mean you arguably could considering that it took two really bad blows to players heads, and one of them to die to make it mandatory to wear one. Even then they allowed players who played prior to 1979 to not wear a helmet if they chose to do so.
@@randomvids1231000 From what I read, no goaltender died as a result of a puck to the head, and the last goalie to play in the NHL without a mask was Andy Brown in 1974.
It's so cool seeing how the game evolves. Goalie masks, expansion teams, player helmets, names on the back of jerseys, ads on the boards, butterfly goalies, goal horns, home jerseys becoming dark instead of white, and visors all showing up slowly is really neat.
I also loved watching it go from black & white to standard definition to high definition. I think it’s funny the NHL still isn’t broadcasting in 4K to my knowledge.
Yup, really neat, the first Cup Final in HD was in 2004, but the majority of people probably didn’t watch an HD broadcast of the Final until 2009 or 2010.
@@amuzulo There will be, although it will be with a very big asterisk next to it and one could argue they wouldn't be considered real champs because the road to the cup was so dramatically altered. Even if my favorite team wins it all, it wouldn't feel as sweet as it would during normal, non covid times.
@@Samsquamsh I wouldn't say that. Sure, the circumstances are different, but it's still at least four rounds of 7-game series. If anything, it's harder this year.
@@MajorBoondoggle Yeah but they didn't have to play a 82 game season directly leading up to the playoffs. This year will surely be interesting because everyone is going into the playoffs at full health. So yeah, as far as that goes, the competition will be VERY fierce. Will be fun to watch and experience, either way.
@@gst013 while I'm a wings fan and when I saw McCartys goal live it made me scream like a 60s fangirl seeing The Beatles in person... I still think Bobby Orr would be the best cup winner all time, then probably Mac.
Bill Barilko disappeared that summer (in 1951) He was on a fishing trip (in a plane) The last goal he ever scored (in overtime) Won the Leafs the cup They didn't win another, 'til 1962 The year he was discovered
Lucas Kz Nope. Every 13 years the top band gets removed when the bottom one fills up. When Washington won two years ago they removed the one that included that 1960-61 Chicago Black Hawks team!!
Watching the goals from the mid-70s onward, I keep asking myself where I was and what I was doing in my life at the time that each goal was scored: in the 70s, I was watching in my parents' living room on a black and white TV late on a school night; from the mid 80s, I was watching on a colour TV in between cramming for final exams at university; in the 90s and 2000s, I was mostly watching from overseas on VHS tapes that people sent me or on some kind of special cable service; and for the last ten years, I've been watching on my HD flat screen TV in my own house.
Still not many goalies even get to go to 1 Stanley Cup finals and Marc Andre Fleury has been to 5 Stanley Cup finals and won 3 Stanley Cups. Fleury keeps climbing the all time wins list as well and when it's all said and done Fleury might even pass Roy and end up in 2nd most wins of all time. Marc Andre Fleury one of the greatest goalies to ever play the game
Great upload. 18:12 This is the first Stanley Cup final I watched. Can still remember Brett Hull's controversial OT winner and it caused the NHL to change the skate in the crease rule. 👏
It is so historical and legendary watching the original 6 NHL teams score goals.especially in black and white.these are like yearbook photos but in motion picture!love every moment of this!
I don’t know about any of you but watching Vinny Lecavlier dipsy doodle out of an obscene amount of traffic to setup Fedotenko with that layup was a thing of beauty. Also Alec Martinez’s double OT goal just gives me goosebumps and reminds me why I love this game so much, just pure passion and jubilation.
No matter how much the game has evolved through the years, the playoff unpredictability remains the same. That is why this is the greatest sport on earth.
The ‘97 McCarty goal still gives me chills. I’m glad Philly scored a meaningless late goal (with like 10 sec left) otherwise it wouldn’t have been the game winner and likely wouldn’t be as well-known.
I love crowds going crazy as much as the next guy. But I think there’s something equally amazing when you go into another teams barn and after you score a backbreaking goal you get complete silence. Basically shutting up the haters and doing the Andrew Ference salute to the crowd
@@jd0879 I do agree that home wins are way better for the viewers. Have you ever been to away game for your team in a different arena? Their silence is amazing. Makes me wanna eat the tears of my victims. Quit the cutsie lol bullshit too bro
After the year 2004, Tampa went through a lot of changes. They lost some core players, there were some issues with the owner to the point where they were willing to sell the team and move it away. But also, I feel like his tank was empty. Lecavalier was so freaking dominant. It's a shame that he couldn't play at the same level anymore
It's weird how blurry everything is then suddenly the 1976 clip feels almost pseudo HD and like I'm there. And those nets with the wedge in them to make a 3 shape just make me shiver remembering one speared a player's leg
Great video! and I wish you all the best for the Vancouver Canucks, they really have great kids in this team. I wish we could have a Game 7 Final vs the Leafs someday ;)
this is also a beautiful presentation of how the tv broadcast quality has improved over the years 25:25 let's appreciate Rinne clubbing Ellis in face...
Great vid, the voices of a lot of these announcers are just so ingrained in my memory, from Don Whitman, Dick Irving and especially the man, the legend, Bob Cole
yeah the expectations of commentators were different back then. I'd argue that there hasn't been as much change in the crowd noise over the years though: there's just more interest in making the crowd noise part of the broadcast because it makes it more exciting for people at home (or at the bar), so there's more microphones, better equipment, etc. also it helps mask the voice of the announcer in the arena, which they don't want in their broadcast.
It's so interesting how you see Blackhawks and kings from 2010-2015 then the lightning start getting to the final round multiple years in a row. Some teams have the winning mentality and others don't.
I like how in the first one the crowd is cheering like they just got done singing happy birthday to a co-worker. Like they didn’t know how huge this was.
You see why hockey is picking up so many more fans now than it did in the earlier years. Quality of play and quality of broadcasting makes a huge difference. Much more exciting with clear detail
All that and HDTV. You couldn't see the puck most of the game with standard def. More than half the time it was just guys skating with sticks. Remember Fox's comet effect to try and help viewers see the puck?
If quality of broadcasting has improved how do you explain Mike Emrick and Bob Cole ? Mike enjoys giving his beloved Bruins a 3 hour BJ whenever he gets to do one of their games and the Cole hates Canadian teams. And yes, I know Emrick was the Devils broadcaster for 12 years, but right now his favourite team is Boston.
@@grousetheghoul2754 you watch your fucking mouth when you talk about Doc, he is a saint. I didn't mean the quality of the commentary team, I was referring to the picture resolution of the broadcast.

I’m a kings fan and my favorite series of all times was blackhawks vs kings in 2014 that series has to be one of the best all time! Also my favorite horns are hawks and kings!
18:54 The eagle looks so bummed out that he allowed that goal. At least he isn't like Marchand, who already has a cup, but yet still cries about not winning another.
Man if Bossy had never gotten his health problems, there is no doubt in my mind he would be at least 3rd all time if not second on the goals list. One of my all time favorite goal scorers!!!!!
The following situations are 3 of the 4 times that a game winning goal can be not clutch at all and just random if anything. 1) Game finishes 5-0, the guy that scores the first goal gets the GW winning goal. 2) Game finishes 5-4, but was 5-0 going into the 3rd and the opposing team tries to come back and falls short. The guy that scored 5th goal with half the game left to make it 5-0 is credited with a GWG. 3) Team wins 1-0. Team that won had a guy score in the first minute and then no more goals are scored. Obviously it doesn't have to be these exact scenarios but generally speaking these are 3 of the 4 scenarios where a GWG doesn't matter. The 4th possibility is obviously getting a late tie breaking goal or an OT goal. Assuming (and this is probably a false assumption but with no data the best I can do) all 4 scenarios happen at the same rate, 75% of the wins for a particular team the player that scored the GWG didn't do anything clutch.
If the cup could tell stories, lol. Each player gets a day with it, and they party. I used to have this weird little book called "pucks" and it had little stories about hockey history. It was round, literally a puck. Disappeared during a party. People need to hear those stories anyway.
Coming from a Blues fan, they somehow had a turning point to stop their Legacy of Failures when Binnington was their goalie for the first time. He helped the blues so much. St. Louis citizens knew one day we would win the Stanley Cup Final....because we all knew they needed a way to stop their Failures and Keep going as a team in NHL.
