The reason why kubrick films portray psycho type cinema so well is that he is very much a perfectionist to a narcissistic extent. He pushed actors into unsafe places where he wanted very honest reactions. This is why kubrick was gold standard for many years and also hated by so many who got him a bit too well. Kubrick is a great director who never acts!
Often that first clip cuts right there and doesn't show how that interaction continues, which can be seen in the full length documentary. After he says "Don't sympathize with Shelley", he continues after a long pause to say to her "It doesn't help you.". Then she responds, with a slight smile, "Yes it does". Take that as you will.
Not at all; she had a long and successful career after "The Shining". She was suffering from multiple illness. All these behind-the-scene clips were staged.
Stanley Kubrick would go to great lengths to get the acting in his films. He forced Jack Nicholson to eat nothing but cheese sandwiches, which Nicholson hated, to prepare him to be angry for The Shining.
R.i.p Shelley Duval ❤ Kubrick definitely seems to get off on the power play + control and enjoyed humiliating her and she in turn , the worst he treated her, the more difficult and defiant she became and i dont fuckking blame her.
It’s a proven fact again and again that the worst you treat people in order to make them “get it right!”, the worse off it’s going to get. It’s like the whole experiment where one plant was not only just watered but also nurtured and talked to in a compassionate, loving way - while the other plant was screamed at and belittled - even though it was also getting watered.. That plant died.
@@Ack359 That’s because Shelley Duvall was incredibly strong and pulled through to make this masterpiece. You have to be strong if you’re going to survive Hollywood as a woman.
@@LaBamba871 Kubrick was a genius who knew how to niggle at her to get the performance he wanted. That’s his job as a director. She lost her marbles later in life, which is fine. Pretty sure she had only gratitude towards Kubrick. Kubrick’s treatment of actors wasn’t gender based, as he pushed male actors to the edge too.
@@Ack359 I’m glad Kubrick is your Lord and God who can do no wrong. You gonna build a church for him too?.. It’s common for people to “lose their marbles” when they get older after years of mistreatment from everybody. That’s called finally having enough and no longer being “nice” about it.
As a filmmaker, it seems like he just found her annoying. If anything, he knew she had to be in a frantic state of panic for those scenes and having her break the character's state of mind by goofing around with her would make it harder to access raw panic.
Directors haven't been able to treat principal players like that for a long time now they have to suck up to them and can only treat non-union extras like dirt.
Whatever you want to say about this, the movie was amazing and Duvall did an outstanding job. When you hear her talk about Kubrick in interviews, she says she learned so much from him. That you had to have incredible stamina to keep up, and that after she did that movie she had so much more stamina in her life because of him. I think the bickering that you see can also be interpreted as a comfort zone for both of them. She could complain about losing hair, and he said "That's losing hair"! a tease back and forth. Both of them being exactly themselves with no put ons. When thought about that way, it becomes more natural and understandable.
Yeah he's more like the kind of person that would blame other people for his own mistakes just like how it's his own mistake not communicated well enough to Shelley! She said the right thing that you have to tell us when it's time. Ex in Hollywood you know they have the whole thing ready set action; they don't just randomly start doing the scene you have to let the cast members know!
You are seeing less than 2 minutes of their exchanges when they've been working for months and months, if the experience was traumatic to her then take her word on it
@@joefish1498 I'm not sure how you can call her a flake when she basically tells him Stanley to have better coronation with the group. All she did was tell him to let us know when it's time to give us indicators.... You know even when you play a video game like destiny 2 raids you coordinate with your group to tell you go beside kill enemies go right go left call out symbols that is team coordination...!! Shelley said the exact same thing let us know when it's time I'm not sure how you cannot understand that but you just straight up just insult her!' use your head. Idiot
@@joefish1498 You know think about all of those developers that were fired from bungee a few weeks ago because of laid off. In the business world we know that that kind of thing happens when management cannot pay their employees and they don't want to admit that they screwed up. In this case management screwed up because they don't want to listen to actual consumers they want to listen to streamers who only care about getting rich off the company. The same can be said about Stanley he doesn't cares about the cast he only cares about making money that's the reason he treated Shelley like garbage. It's just like what happened to the actress ruby Rose she played batwoman season 1 to 2. She left the show and she actually said it on late show interviews such as Fallon she left The CW because they refused to listen to the director and producer was making the set extremely dangerous that she ended up breaking her back regardless when she reported the issues with the set. If you want a better example look what happened to Damon Wayans for the TV show on fox lethal weapon He reported to fox that his co-star was being unsafe on the set he was making risky mistakes with the stunts and because of it Damian got injured his head was cut open during a stunt. Fox did not want to admit what happened that it was their mistake for not listening but instead they fired chase ... It was a big story back in 2019 because of what happened. Both actors even went on the view to talk about it that how unsafe these directors for movies and TV shows make things unsafe for cast members and they don't give a shit about it. So maybe think about before you call someone a flake when they're trying to say the right thing. Being someone who cares about your own safety does not make you a flake or a Karen that's like saying if someone got hit by a car and you call the police you're going to call them a snitch. Grow up
She may not have been the only one going through issues here (definitely beats being the sound guy) but she was most likely the one going through them without any support.
He needs to learn some better communication seriously when you work you are part of a team you're supposed to respect your co-workers if there's an issue you talk to them with respect
I find ironic that the very same oppressed people in this comment section who also know what it's like to be mistreated at work use the: There are children starving in Africa, fallacy instead of showing some empathy.
Seriously..I fucking hate comparative suffering. There is always someone who has it far, far worse than you..doesn't mean your suffering is any less valid.
R.I.P. to Shelly but I also see a lot her just hanging out. Being on a set is about waiting for camera setup, but you must be on the ready. Cocoa and cigs are a luxory unless it is a scheduled break.
No, but that was part of his process as well. He went out of his way to stroke Jack's ego in order to make him feel arrogant and egotistical whilst also making sure he was sleep deprived and only given food he hated to make him angry.
a lot more is involved in casting an actor like their contracts & nepotism, like Shelley is Robert Duvall’s daughter so she had industry connections. just saying it might not have been stanley personally …
The Wendy Theory - This Finally Explains The Shining! if you think you understand the shining, you probably dont, shelleys character is ACTUALLY THE EVIL KILLER and jack is the innocent one, in the movie she is having a major psychotic break that has her thinking jack has gone insane, when it is really her, once you understand that and rewatch the movie, you will never understand how you ever could have thought it was jack all along. it also changes your entire perception of reality when you listen to WITNESSES to events, and start questioning their recall in your own mind. nothing is as it seems.
The bartender said "its always been you Jack." That totally contradicts this view in my opinion. Moreover, the old photo of Jack leads me to conclude it was him all along over the years.
@@billb89 that was all in wendys head, it never happened, she is constantly imagining things in her head that never happened that justify her actions later.
Its sad what happened to her in recent years and that she died but this title is missleading, when Kubrick says he doesnt simpatize with her its cause he is balding where as she has long hair and is losing a few cause of stress due to the work enviroment, schedule, type of film etc... Shelley Duball my have had issues filming this film im not saying otherwise but im not calling it being misstreated, she was an actress and as one she signed a contract willingly knowing what she had to do within certain boundries of course, probably she had more problems while filming due to her mental state detiriorating over time even when she was young cause its obvious she had issues.
Tbh, she just sounds like she is full of excuses and complaining about everything. "My hair is coming out in chunks" and she holds up one strand of hair. I'm betting she was like that throughout. I don't blame him getting annoyed at her.
She could have quit at any time. Kubrick was considered a legend at the time having already made: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, DR. STRANGELOVE, BARRY LYNDON and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and actors begged to work with him. She wasn't exactly working for minimum wage here, that's not an excuse to treat her like crap, but she also made the movie POPEYE that same year and was set to work on TIME BANDITS after that, she wasn't exactly an out of work actress who had to stay in the movie or never work again. A few years later he directed FULL METAL JACKET and he treated some of the actors in that film like crap as well and they all said working for Kubrick was difficult but a dream come true. Kubrick is such a cold hearted monster that during the filming of FULL METAL JACKET he discovered a family of rabbits had been accidentally killed during an intense "war scene" and he was so upset he immediately stopped shooting for the rest of the day because he was an animal lover and felt awful as he blamed himself for the accident. We seem to ignore that Jack was treated like crap at times as well, to be completely fair Shelley was treated worse but it's not like Kubrick mentally tortured Shelley while he tucked Jack Nicholson in bed every night and gave him kisses, the main concern EVERYONE had was for the child actor, they convinced him he was making a silly comedy for grown-ups. Filling horror films can be rough, just look at THE EXORCIST, THE OMEN or POLTERGEIST (to name a few). Duvall constantly said the experience of working with Kubrick was one she wouldn't trade for ANYTHING, she did say she'd never do a role like that again but she also said: "working with lovable Stanley was a fascinating working experience." It seems she was a lovely woman, but if you want to vilify someone, go examine how Dr. Phil exploited a clearly mentally unwell, senior actress for ratings, not a film shot over 40yrs ago, that everyone said was difficult but THEY decided to take the challenge of making the film as we besmirch a brilliant director who died in 1999 and can't defend his "questionable" directing techniques.
No, I see a professional director that's respectful in every way. She complains every second while being paid huge money. She wants a bed out out for her sniffles, she's missing her ques, and even when Kubrick redirects her over-acted performance, he is very respectful but at the same time firm.
@@unkept1113 In several of his last interviews, Kubrick said that he created or encouraged some myths about himself, for example that he wore a helmet to drive his car and that he wouldn't let anybody driving him go faster than 35 miles per hour. Another of those myths was that he was a monster who delighted in torturing actors by making them repeat a 10-second scene hundreds of times. According to Kubrick, Scatman Crothers and Shelley Duvall agreed with him to tell the press that they'd been abused to the point of mental breakdown. The publicity campaign for _The Shining_ included these behind-the-scenes mistreatments, which were acted out; from what Shelley Duvall later said, they actually all had a lot of fun during that filming, something confirmed by Danny Lloyd. It is worth remembering that Kubrick also worked in the advertising business, and he knew very well that those twisted stories sold much better than kind stories, especially when it comes to a horror movie. I uploaded some of those interviews on my previous channel, but YT shut it down for copyright reasons.
@@unkept1113 They were all good actors, their job is basically faking emotions. Don't get fooled by whatever you see on screen, remember that's what showbusiness is all about.
The movie was good but I don't think it's the masterpiece many claim it as. I prefer the book. I don't think the film did it proper justice, though I think that's nearly impossible, as Stephen King's mind is on another level.
I have wondered if Kubrick thought that the only way to get Duvall to play her character convincingly was to rattle her so she could feel what her character was experiencing.
Stanley's just trying to make a great film. Directors direct the actors and that's what he was trying to do. Crying about losing a few hairs seems pretty superficial to me. Imo
It really makes me wonder if she had a voice for herself. Did she push back harder against Kubrick or did she want the roll so badly that she coped with his nastiness? Either way, Kubrick looks like an ass in all the clips I've seen of him with Shelley.
@@mariedit9935 no the wendy theory f's u lol, cause it's real, kubrick wanted to f king, so he completely altered the story, without altering the story, to prove he was better than king, and he was. thats why king remade the shining lol
