Cleaning up a well preserved nearly 150 year old plane after 6 months of rubbing oil into the dried out wood. In the end I could not take it for a test drive. The old gem needs a proper Iron Cap and it will be in good working order... or leave as is for a rare old shelf sitter.

thanks for the video. just FYI, the reason for the wide mouth is that the sole has been worn down from use and regular flattening (a must for wooden body planes)

Soaked the wood on mine in Howard orange oil the liquid stuff for a day. Then used the feed n wax. Wow! What a nice Finnish

Again a very nice job Keith. If you could do a video on a router plane, that would be great. Thanks a lot for sharing and good luck with the pile😉

Believe I've got a Type 7, mouth is much smaller than your type 3 shows. Thanks for video!

Well that was a good one. Well done. I see some old saws around the shop. How about a video on those ?

I've got a couple No. 35s and they have a small mouth. I cant speak to the Type 3 since both of mine are newer, but at least for the ones I have, their mouth is small

Beautiful tool. Could you tell me what those short, black gloves you wear are? The skin on my old hands is getting rather thin and it looks as if those gloves give you the dexterity needed while protecting your hands.

"Dave Bennett" is a fairly common name. I'll look for the gloves.

Those cracks in the wood won't ever properly close up. If you were going for restoration or to make it user friendly, I'd recommend you fill the cracks with epoxy then scrape the epoxy flush with the surface after it dries. It's covered up so won't be seen from the top. If they go all the way through to the bottom, you'd have to lap the wood bottom to minimize friction on the epoxy spots. It's worth a try if this hasn't sold yet.

Where did you get all those planes, Keith? Just watching eBay and garage sales?

I keep trying to see what you use for the dirty oil but can't quite figure it out.
