Stanley No 4 Hand Plane Restoration
This video is about a Stanley Bailey No. 4 Smoothing Bench Plane restored to preserve it's value. It is a Type 14 made between 1929 and 1930. The plane was disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, lightly greased where steel moves over steel and then waxed prior to reassembled. It has an excellent body with no breaks, cracks or pitting; 85% of the original japanning and an perfect throat. The frog is very good with all easy moving adjusters. Threads on all screws are near perfect. The iron is sharp with no chips and features a Type "AA" logo "SW" Sweetheart. The rosewood tote has no repairs and a beautiful grain. However, the Stanley logo decal is worn off. The knob is perfect with the beautiful rosewood grain. This is my fourth restoration of a plane and I'm just now gaining a little understanding of what is required to do the job correctly.
Note: 1 patent date behind frog. MADE IN U.S.A. cast at toe, raised ring for knob, is probably a type 14. The type 14 was the only type with the “No” on the left side of the knob and the “4” on the right side ash.
All video was captured and edited using an iPhone 8 Plus, an iMac with iMovie and Photoshop.

It's always such a good feeling seeing a tool someone could have just as easily tossed in the trash now restored for another lifetime hopefully.

Preservation is best some times. When it is possible. If it was more far gone the sure get after it. Good choice and well done. Thanks for sharing!

This is a great plane for a mindful rebuild. Excellent work. Very sweet plane. Thanks! BTW Is that a hubcap from about a 1949-50 Pontiac? Haven't seen one of those in a while. 😎

I’m not sure on the Pontiac hubcap date. I just found that relic in a shed 2 weeks ago. It was out of the weather but in the bottom of an old bucket filled with old metal junk. My dad was a Pontiac man. Thanks for the very kind compliment.
