Stanley Spencer's life and artistic work was dominated by his relationships with his two wives, Hilda Carline and Patricia Preece. This exhibition at the gallery in Cookham, Berks dedicated to his work, examines one of the most extraordinary of British art historical stories. For Spencer these relationships ran in tandem with his love of his home village of Cookham, but almost resulted in financial ruin and emotional collapse.
There were four people in his two marriages, his first wife Hilda, his second wife, Patricia , and Patricia's lover and life long partner Dorothy. All are represented with portraits or self-portraits.
