Seems like the whole dev team was in fact working on the singleplayer campaign and the PU was being run by a skeleton crew and now they finally moved all the devs to the PU

It was actually about 1/3 of the company (1,300 people, maybe 85-90% devs) were working specifically on Squadron 42 single player game (behind the curtain), 1/3 of the company was working on the multiplayer Persistent Universe, and 1/3 of teams were working on features that are shared across both. The huge number of features that just released in 3.23 for the PU were in development for 2+ years (behind the curtain) because they were just not ready and they wanted them in a more polished state to release. Just because they worked them into the SQ42 dev branch and then rolled them out to the wider PU does not mean they were JUST for SQ42. Nearly all SQ42 assets are shared with the PU multiplayer.

Logically, if flying solo, you would keep the ship depressurised so no fires could break out, except maybe the cockpit, unless the seats will supply oxygen too.

good one, did not think of that one yet wonder how they are going to make that work hehe as oxygen will be also part of the ships very very soon now. yea or if you go into combat just remove the oxygen in the ship, no fires then.

@@ricky6608 that is where my idea came from. The expanse is an awesome series. I figured no fires was also part of their thinking but certainly loss of resources would definitely be an issue. If you lost enough to a breech you would have to keep entire sections depressurised till you could land and replenish. I assume they would have a tank somewhere that would store the gasses when decompressed.

I played the Pyro demo last year but on a single instance it performed like Stanton does today. The exciting part was participating in the server mesh tests. We jumped to Pyto and Stanton with 1 solar system per instance initially. The other test was we ran Stanton meshed across 2 instances and it worked ok, and they pushed an instance almost to 800 players before it died. I think instances will start in the 200-400 player range when we start the next tests as that was when it was most stable in the short testing they ran opened to wave 1 a couple months ago. I expect they will open it up to more waves and live on PTU longer because of how complex it is and the need to load test it.

Keep in mind server meshing v1 won’t have any of the dynamic features OA mentioned. It will be static not dynamic at first and may only be just for jumping from Stanton to Pyro or vice versa. If that’s the case then each system will still be on a single game server and won’t provide any performance increases. However, they tested multiple static server meshed server configurations including multiple meshed servers for a single star system so it’s possible SMv1 could come with performance increases, we just won’t know for sure until the elaborate on SM in 4.0.

I would hazard a guess they wouldn't be so dumb as to release the holy grail of server improvements to only facilitate more server problems with a Stanton to Pyro only mesh. It is CIG so they very well could, but a lot of the good will they are building up by finally showing some forward momentum would crumble if, as I mentioned earlier, the holy grail of server performance isn't utilized to actually improve servers asap.

In early 2014, over 10 years ago, I began my relationship with Star Citizen. One of the main reasons I got involved in this relationship, spending several hundred dollars to purchase a few spaceships, and thoroughly enjoying the graphics and imagination that this project offered to its fans, was because it served as a driver for my imagination and my love for everything related to space. Another aspect of this relationship was the promise made by the project leaders that VR would also be integrated into the game. "Oh my God," I told myself, "this will be amazing!" As of today, after more than a decade, when every self-respecting game is also presented in VR, only Star Citizen lags behind and disappoints a large portion of its fans. Tell me, please, is there any game in the world today with more potential for VR than this one? Look at DCS, look at MSFS 2020, and soon MSFS 2024. What is happening with the leaders of this project? Surely, they see what is happening in the world today. A huge disappointment, missing out on an enormous potential for new customers. It's truly a shame.

As much as some say that resources that were put into SQ42 was a hinderance to SC, I feel many forget that just about everything they created for it, can be ported into the SC MMO. Or the tech that was needed to create it. We're already starting to see some of it. This should include the working NPC crew members that are needed to operate the larger ships in SQ42. I imagine they would do the same in SC. An entire solar system is another big step for us. All the AI tech, and the tools to create interactable NPC's with possible cut scenes for us. We really didn't lose anything by them changing focus on sSQ42. We just haven't seen it come to the verse yet. Its much easier to test and polish in an enclosed single player environment. If they port it over to the MMO, and it breaks, than its likely a networking issue, and much easier to find and fix the problem.

A little imagination, 12 years of development and 700 million dollars in funding, for a game that still has performance issues on the highest end PC. E:D had to run on the potato that is Series S. The comparisons people make are not fair. People don't realize how hard it is to do everything SC is. For example, No Man's Sky has planets and FPS but it is not the same as ED. It is not realistic, lacks physics, simulation and the same level of scale. SC takes much of this to the next level. None of this would be possible without the absurd levels of funding, which in turn was built on many broken promises and huge delays and scope creep. Granted we have to account for SQ42, but even half the money, 350 mil, is a massive budget. But there is a tendency for us to just take every feature from multiple games and expect a game to do all of them regardless of context.

The plan is to discourage single players from flying large ships solo, for balance I think. The idea is that you can't just go out and buy a capital ship and wreck havoc. You need a crew, a plan, and resources to fly and defend that ship. It's a very different approach than other space games but I like the concept at least I know they said eventually they'll have NPCs that you can hire as crew if you just don't want to interact with other players or if schedules don't line up with your friends/org members or whatever. But who knows when or if that be put in.

Even if 4.0 makes the PU, it likely will be very rough. - Replication layer is a bit "dicky" at the moment - If left unresolved, I expect this to get worse with server meshing, where more game servers will be talking at the replication layer - Sometimes accepted missions take 10+ mins to actually show up in your accepted missions tab; On planetary / moon outposts, it has taken a couple of minutes for the buildings and other assets to show up half the time! - Also: 3,23 feature - No Persistent Hangars and/or Cargo Elevators in there yet. Let's have those in and working before getting 4.0!

@@Wylie288 I don't think you know much about game development. even sandbox games have a planed gameplay loop, the experience they expect the player to seek, and how the mechanics interact to highlight those experiences, they are not an actual sandbox. EVE online's player driven economy is not emergent from a random asortment of mechanics, it was planned by the devs from the beginning, and then adjusted and expanded as the players interacted with it to fullfill the expected experiences from the players. the problem is SC is starting with the mechanics, not the gameplay loop, and then creating mechanics to enrich that gameplay loop. Chris Roberts has a vision for the future of the game (at least I hope he does), but everyone is just reflecting what they want to see from the game when they look at those mechanics and how they think they will interact in the future. and I think most people will be very disapointed as they find out SC is not going to be the game they were hopping for because Chris had a different vision for what every gameplay loop is going to look like.

There are 3 additional star systems developed for Squadron42, those will be added to SC too. Doing the celestial bodies is not that difficult anymore, last year on an interview a dev said that he can do a moon alone in a month because the tools are that advanced now. The time consuming part is concepting and creating the points of interest, potential unique mechanics, population, unique loot etc. But creating for example a system that only has a star and a planet, maybe a couple moons and not much variety, but still good target for mining, cargo hauling etc should not take long anymore. And the current system, Stanton, was picked for development because it was one of the largest, the other systems, including the upcoming Pyro are smaller.

What happened to all the ‘Im Fine With Waiting Until a Game is Done’ talk after Cyberpunk release 😄 but I’m perfectly fine with waiting as what SC devs are trying to accomplish is an enormous step forward for video games and server tech in general, too far ahead of it’s time really and so here we sit and wait while tech catches up, slowly…

If (and this is a big if) all of this is delivered on time, it will be two systems down, only forty-eight to go before full release.

we still have to get personal hangers and cargo elevators before 4.0, they are committing to Polaris being flyable at IAE and im so hopeful for them to keep their word. so far we have gotten everything they said we would from citcon with hangers and cargo being slightly delayed to a 3.23.x patch

Hangars will be put into a point patch after Invictus, since they didn't want that disrupting the event.

The solar burst. Looks to me like it's a technical method to mask something. Maybe some sort of cache flush or tile loading. At this point it doesnt seem to be anything other than a solar system querk that just whites out the screen and maybe affords a moment to effectivly load something in. If thats an inventive way of masking some loading, then bravo to be honest. It'll be interesting to see its frequincy. I'm sure it'll have a pattern.

I tried to play SC five times in the last week, and every single time I couldnt get anywhere because of glitches. There's nothing to be excited about here.

Multi-Crew needs to be a requirement for larger ships. This is a must. Must must must must. There are too many MMOs that have completely negated their own existence by providing absolutely no incentive for playing with other people.

As long as someone is willing to try to make it happen, since no one else has or is trying. The internet will never get that Ready Player One experience. They couldn't handle what it would take to make it happen. And no one will pay for it.

When i see all the stuttering and timeouts and disconnects i see returning after a couple of years i have not that much ambition to explore pyro. I think Starship Simulator is a much better bet for the next few years. CIG can name it what they want. But sptepping forward so far happens I very small steps. They cook with water like all others do.

Disconnects no longer happen unless it's on the client end. 3.23 has the replication layer, so it reconnects you in case a disconnection takes place.

@@Billy-bc8pk Might be that this is true for you. Perhaps even for CIG. For me Errorcode 30018 said something other. Beside this i lost all my helmets one after another from my home base inventory in 23.0. Character Repair brought all back, despite the support mail and the repair button told me character repair will not affect inventory at all. And a bit more things happened in barely 2 hours that are too long to describe for youtube comment section. My conclusion is - i am not impressed (as a gamer - i have a lot of respect for the developers). And they have a lot of work to do before i consider SC worth of my playtime. So whatever is true for you i hope it is better than whats true for me.

I want robots in the game that you can purchase and customize. They would serve as crew and security drones. It would depend on advanced AI though which I feel can be accomplished with the latest tech.

I’m not going to lie, the way they’ve panhandled for those ships over the years has been obscene, and ten years is taking the p*ss - but it does look amazing. I feel like I might actually buy this in a year or so.

1200ish employees cost 72M ish annually in salaries. That doesn't include all the other expenses they have to cover. I have yet to see anyone come up with a better funding model, that doesn't force players to spend more. This way allows those with extra money to contribute, while those who do not, get the opportunity to play a game no other developer will ever try to create. Its the first time the wealthy have ever helped one of my dreams come to life. And the less wealthy have access to the same content.
