I wish a lot of the RU-vidrs made "for real" videos like this one especially for the newer community that is possibly going to get sucked in like us that were in from the kickstarter. The only people that are going to have a problem with this video are the ones that already have buyer's remorse and are fighting to defend it.
Thanks! While I regularly chastise CIG's marketing for what it lacks, they excel at selling the boat dream to players. I also think it highlights a major fault in the CIG logic behind the whole dream: I love the idea of a 1:1 space life, but I am also the kind of person who enjoys playing a study simulator. The whiplash in the community on eating in Star Citizen has been interesting - if the majority of people play video games to escape real life, is it really best to implement a video game that closely resembles it? Most players in the Verse want to own fleets like Jay Leno - but if CIG makes SC 1:1 will that really be possible for the masses? Does that bode well for a game? All things we'll see. Thanks again for the great comment!
@@Leadnap I have to say, at first while listening to you unpack what "1:1" could entail, I was like nope. But after finishing the video and thinking about it, it sounds a lot better than the alternative. Before watching this series of your videos I'd figured that I'd never be able to just buy my way into being Capt. Kirk (to use your analogy) and that I'll just join an org to scratch that itch. But I'd like to see this reinforced through gameplay mechanics because it makes it a lot more realistic...owning that boat should be a giant PITA that requires the support or collaboration of multiple people. It plays into CIG's design philosophy of encouraging collaborative play.
When I was a teenager my father bought a 26' long boat to go fishing on the great lakes. I admit that we did have some fun and make some memories. But with the money that he spent on that boat, we could have chartered every one of those fishing trips and still had money to spare. Now that boat is rotting in a pole barn in northern Michigan. My plan for Star Citizen is to have Freelancer DUR with an efficient quantum drive and do light long haul cargo and exploration. It's the only ship I need to have.
I'm glad RU-vid put this video in my feed. Watched both of the fleet videos and they have given me a lot to think about in terms of future purchases and potential ccu's.
I like your objective coverage of star citizen. I agree large ships will require a load of upkeep, at the end of the day the best ship is friendship! It will be important to be in a good corp.
I think the "between the lines here" message was very much have the friends to play on your big ships with you. The big ships are important and fun - but I worry for the folks out there buying them up like collectors items without thinking of what it will take to enjoy them.
I would currently be completely into owning one of the large science vessels and taking a few friends to go look around, but you stated how I felt about fuel/jump times along with not knowing how “large” cig wants to make the universe. I will say on the upside for pirates would be the auto creation of cargo lanes due to the need to buy fuel and having such limited fuel sources/ locations if cig does make many systems that require externally long jump times
the m2 Hercules is literally my dream ship, and its the only other ship besides my Avenger Titan i plan to own. having only two ships is great for me, especially when i can use the two for different purposes and have fun with them both
Good idea to point out crew requirements and operating cost. The good thing is unlike sailing ships they do not half in re-sell price as soon as you untie the docking ropes :).
I like the idea of mostly being a "Han" type a player (especially in my MSR), but I did join an org recently and I'm really looking forward to that aspect of play.
The crew aspect of play I think is another front that CIG holds in the market, it will be a blast but in an 80 person Org with a Javelin only one will get to be Kirk. The Verse was really built for the Han's.
Nice to hear someone actually being real about the ships. I think a lot of folks get caught up with wanting them without thinking how they'll be able to use them in game
All my ships are economic based, making each other more versatile and profitable. I only have one ship with a crew capacity larger than one hand that can still run a skeleton crew. And that one is basically my lynchpin. Only the one ship will be really hampered by playing solo. I may not have a combat ship but that doesn't mean I won't in game. I don't much envy people that have fleets of capital ships already. Hopefully CIG tells us enough about what the game is going to do, for most to feel like they can plan out well. I just hope we knew we could plan on a small and medium option to choose from, in each profession, before release.
You just made sooooo many people get that gut wrenching feeling of buyer's remorse. I have been greatly considering cutting down to two medium ships and selling off excess on the Grey or to friends. The largest ship I own is a Cat so I've followed your philosophy in this vid for the last year. My motivation for down sizing is to make aquiring other ships a goal to drive game play. As usual, when you have something to say, it is worth saying.
Thanks! If you would have asked me at the start of the series if this was what I was going to say I would have given a different answer. However when I read comments, discuss with others and frame how I would explain something to new players I arrived here. On ship buying in game as well, yes it is something to aspire to achieve in game but furthermore like I said at the end - if you have the economic power to buy a hammerhead, you likely will have the economic power to fly it too.
People complain about the maintenance costs but personally I enjoy it. It adds weight to the ship, it’s immersive, it’s realistic to the fullest extent. If you want dumb fun, go play whatever the new Star Wars game is. Or just play a smaller ship that doesn’t need a crew. (When I say “you” I mean anyone in general, not trying to call the RU-vidr out)
Hi Hannah, when you said "you" I didn't think you meant me individually. I agree with you, I like the added cost, it adds balance and planning to the game, in addition to the immersion. Thanks for your comment!
This is a good thought, Why my fleet is primarily money makers. Freelancer DUR for cargo/ exploration small jump points, Connie Taurus personal all around cargo/smuggling until I get a good crew. BMM/retail sales, Reclaimer Salvage/component supply's for BMM, Prospector and Orion for mining. Carrack for crewed personal cargo/exploration/all about crewed personal ship/Pices/Rover/Yellowjacket, Pollaris w/Sabre Command flag ship. I need only one ship to make my bases
For the foreseeable I am just fine being a Han. My org is great and we have plenty of large ships for current needs and even probably enough to take care of us shortly after release. Do I want a Polaris? You bet your bottom aUEC I do! I want a big ol' Kraken too! But I've set those up as far flung goals for myself because right now I have no use for something that big and neither does my org. My current goals right now are Hawk(I just love it), a Warden, Cutty Blue, Ares Inferno, and further down the line a Tali or Eclipse. I'll be set for what I want to do and have the base fleet to both enjoy myself up to release as well as helping my org out. Great video and really looking forward to seeing the upcoming ones!
This is exactly where I am right now too. I dream of having a Polaris but I really struggle to justify how I would actually use one (and I am partly financially invested into one as it is!).
Well said. More people need to learn that their yaught may not lead to the adventures that they wish for. Now you've got me thinking of I should have picked up a C2.
@@Leadnap I think that the Starlifters especially the M2 will become one of the best everyday in game ships. They will of course be used for cargo hauling but also moving heavy equipment like tanks for military ops in dangerous areas as well as filling the need for people that need supplies and construction equipment like ground vehicles etc flown in as bases or farms etc are being built planet side around the "verse". You might say the Herules Starlifter will be the ship that built the "verse".
I want to be a space trucker so I bought a Freelancer, a Prospector, a ROC, an URSA Rover, and a few other small things. I also just bought a Herc C2 in the sale this weekend.
You have the same thoughts as I do regarding fleet building. I look around in disbelief at all these concierge backers who show off what looks like a ship catalogue and think to myself, "Boy I hope you have LTI with that lot, mate! Because covering the costs of all those when you're just running one of them at a time is going to hurt." Meanwhile, any time I mock up a wish list for myself, I hit about eight ships (nearly half consisting of ground vehicles) and I'm done . Was this video also asking for suggestions for a December giveaway? There was a moment there where it sounded like that. My suggestion: 2020 is still looking like "The Year of Crusader" (I'm still hopeful we'll get some version of Orison by the end of Q4), so on that note the Mercury Star Runner and C2 Hercules Starlifter offer a couple of options depending on your budget. Both look like solid choices that anyone would be thrilled to win.
Ive got the Cutty blue , cutty black , arrow and Starrunner and thats all Im buying for now , I play with 2 friends and my son so all of those ships are perfect for me , I might buy a couple of land vehicles like the new greycat ROC , but like you said after that size of ship , its all the upkeep youll need that people forget about
To be honest, i would rather have a group of smaller ships with multi seats for me and the wife as she is in to Star Citizen also. No Large or Capital ships, in saying that i would own the Caterpillar it would be the only large ship for me apart from a freelance MAX. Grate vids btw most enjoyable
Great video like always and you covered some important stuff that most people do not think about. Everyone is wanting to buy the biggest and baddest ships but might not have a crew for them, and all the expenses that come along with having that ship. I know a few guys who will be shocked when they have to start paying all of the fees associated with their ships in the future.
I agree that medium ships will be more useful. I do have one large ship, a Banu Merchantman, but I hope it will be manageable with a few people. I was thinking of a circuit where I use ships and leave one behind to unload, etc as I take another to where another is located, rinse and repeat. Something like that. Maybe start off small with some box missions to build up some capital and go from there.
The corsair seems like my dream ship, i can't wait to fly her. That said, she is the largest ship i'm going to own. Her and the Tali. I'm glad i'm part of an org and crew
I like the way your doing the giveaway! I honestly hope that on a Capital ship, like the Idris, the pilot can shoot the main size 10 gun. If not it will be nearly impossible for the pilot and gunner to coordinate shots.
Thanks! I don't think they ever will - probably give the pilot a que to follow. The main guns on a battle ship are fired by a director not the ships pilot.
Awesome video . My giveaway suggestion is a corsair. I know it isn't big expensive , but it goes a long with this video . It has guns in the pilot hands , it can travel distance and a solo to small crew like a duo or trio can really put it to work. Second . I have a carrack but stuff like you talked about in this video is why I am always considering selling it. The star lifter is what I agree is the largest ship a person should buy with real money except for people like the commanders in orgs like I am in where they own a handful of capitals and the commanders and such plan on leading the org from the ships . How that will play out remains to be seen but it makes sense . Totally agree with everything you said .
Thanks - and thanks for the suggestion. You're on the money about the giveaway ship being one that would generally follow the advice, but then I still want it to be the sort of ship that most of the audience would see as getting something in the hanger they probably couldn't easily justify doing themselves. Your input is invaluable in that! I too am a Carrack owner, but owning that ship is what really helped drive me to this point: it is such a cool ship but every time I take it somewhere, so much of it goes un-used as I fly there alone. The hallways are empty, bunks unused.
@@Leadnap then Polaris is my other suggestion . It will take the fewest crew of the really big ships . It is ultra popular and so hard to get because it sells out in seconds . That would be an epic win for anyone . Even tho most probably still wouldn't make use of it . I don't really suggest the carrack because there are so many and so many people have it . Winning a carrack is still cool tho . But a polaris .. wooo that would be epic win .
nice vid, this should help newer players a lot i think. I'm currently happy with my fleet of ships and would like to see how other game loops will work when CIG implements them into game like data, tractor beams, salvage, etc.
Such a great series! All I need is my Space Penguin and Star Runner....with the Red for the occasional face to face tussle with disagreeable types. Oh, and the Carrack wiring that was sparking is probably linked to the Bathroom...and that was clearly designed by a former/now Drake engineer....LOL. And as you know, sparks flying in a Drake is ambiance, so they anvil guys will see it as a marketable feature! LOL
I have been an Anvil fan from the start. But yeah the Drake designs make me grin and occasionally look at my cockpit and say, "Hmm...am I going to die to a torpedo or electrocution?"
True true. This is why smart people should opt for a single person medium ship for money making and maybe 1-2 very large money making ships if they have the org to fill the seats and secure the job with some supporting vessels. This way you earn way more but also have to split.
That is one of the things I really like about how CIG says this will work - I like that sure owning an Orion means I can harvest big bucks - but - a steady chunk of that is going to pay out to other people who don't own one. While [generally] no one aspires to be a mining laser operator in their off time in video games - this really opens up access to big economic opportunity for those who can't afford a $800 mining ship of their own.
Best fleet is honestly quite easy. Buy a ship you find interesting for the gameplay you want at your budget level. I honestly do not even want large ships even though I could afford them. I am a casual player so ships like the Kraken that would require multiple friends just to get any useful gameplay out of it, does not excite me. Love looking at these huge ships, but not really interested in owning. At least not for the foreseeable future. 45 minute QT time across stanton???? What ship does that speed? 11:55 Every time I see a illustration of ship size comparison I am shocked by the Cutty Black. One day I will get it through my thick skull that it is a large small ship. I mean it is bigger than a prolwer. Flys ridiculously good for a large mailbox with engines strapped on. 15:00 Woah, they finally figured out to aim the headlights on the Defender. Almost makes me want mine back now.
Running a mercenary organization is fun, even in our little ships. We currently have a large ship that we are saving up for as a small flagship to use if we need to take on carracks and potentially hammerheads (with the help of a bomber squad). This goal is pretty far off, but we have a shared pay pal to slowly build the funds for the purchase. Wish us luck I guess!
Best of luck! Glad you and your friends have found a way to enjoy the time you spend together in the Verse - which is the most important consideration.
Yes I know at this point - unfortunately every video I produce is on a week long production schedule just for the time it takes to research, script, record, edit etc. It was with pretty high confidence that the ROC would release too but "bird in hand." CIG had not yet announced the ROC officially when this was uploaded.
Good thing the big ship I'm aiming for is a hercules. My plan is to also have a small ship alongside to use as a cheap runabout, which I can just store in the cargo hold, meaning that if I am going far, I'll still have my trusty aurora with me instead of it being on the other side of the verse.
This was something I have been trying to also fit in, though I think Bored covered it some months ago pretty well. The Verse will be big, you won't want to go back across it to just grab one of your other ships and fly back. Unlike Eve there are no ships that carry the biggest ships from A to B (though there probably will be a time delayed and expensive in game NPC option to fly your stored ship to a new spot).
Only thing is that we don't know the specific costs of AI but as the idea is to always fill a role with players when possible because there is nothing better than filling a role with someone you can communicate with... it will likely be cheaper per AI than to pay a player for their services. Cant forget though that AI crews are going to make up the mass majority of space craft even for huge orgs...
im not being stupid and ive just got a cutlass black. it seem designed to be a one person ship with crew as a perk if you can get them. enough room for cargo and a small vehicle. its light and hopefully cheap to run and maintain. until the games out and i got an income in it, im staying put where i am
That is wonderfully insightful. And pretty much the words I live by. I've got a ton of ships, but mostly 1-5 players. My largest are BMM and Carrack. But I've got a Max, Corsair and Starrunner for early game moneymakers. I might get a Polaris for the Org (I mean for me, but for the Org military) or I might get an Orion.
We're on pretty even ground in our thinking there. I am in the same boat, though I also am trying to scale down some of the single seat stuff just because it isn't appealing to me at this point.
@@Leadnap I think I'm going to keep a lot of my fighters and racers just because they will be distractions in game. As I'm trying to build up enough funds to fill the BMM, I'm not going to be able to pony up a couple of millon for a 350R. And once I'm profitable with the BMM, while it may be easy to buy the 350R, I'm working on saving up for the 890 Jump. So I think a lot of my wishlist small ships are going to get put on hold while I go for the next big trophy. So the 350, the eye-candy Khartu-Al, Heartseeker and the 325 stay. I'll be getting an M50 and Saber along the way (saber is the best
The only ship I want now in my fleet is the Pioneer. I've got the rest already. Gladius, Prospector, Aquila (Ursa and Merlin included) and a Reliant for my 2cnd account.
I think the Pioneer will stand out as a sort of exception - CIG would be hard pressed to introduce a smaller builder, so even though it's expensive the in game demand would create economic lasting power to run one easily. Solid choice
I have been thinking about what to do with my little fleet but I think at the moment I am going to wait and see what each of the gameplay loops are like before I decide on what to invest in in case I don't enjoy them. I also want the really big ships to be a future goal after launch.
That is certainly one of the big messages here. Bigger =/= better. So many things we can't even do yet it would be goofy to build a repair fleet and find out you hate repair.
I mainly use medium ships, but have a couple larger ships 3 to 5 players. I am not interested in capital ships. The largest one I want is a Genisis, due to modularity mentioned at one point.
Both Crucible and BMM offer more diversity and value then than the Herc The crucible as your main ship to repair ships or strip them loads of money. Can even tow captured ship off to strip in safe space. Minimal crew as well. not just carry a fighter in the scarab you could leave the scarab behind instead dock with your fighter tow it hell the Argo can tow medium ships it may be able to tow large to capitals in space. A BMM again a large ship put a guild alt on it use it as a fence ship it will have its own private shop. Dont need to fly around people dump cargo to it from guild on group nights. Most large ships come with a hanger just put it somewhere useful. Then log in and use NPC's to manage shop while watching netflicks or something. Slowly shift your groups loot. So when on with your friends you have more time doing the fun stuff. It's not the large ships that are a problem it will be time to meet up with friends. It's a different game with 9:1 ratio. you don't need a big guild to be successful but you need to manage time and thats where large ships help give it back to you. We all have game time and a little spare time. BMM as a cargo ship over 3K SCU currently thats probably 4x the herc Cargo so while slower it will not need to make as many trips. Or to save time if you can spend $350 on a hull D you can put an alt on it and use it as a guild vault space is a big place use it. The medium ships in the guild can load it and then once in a while it will need emptying on a guild night. Just like a treasure chest it will be hidden you dont need to pay the NPCs when your logged out they only need paying when in use. But load that bad boy and you will save sooo much time emptying small ships. 3 buddies one with crucible one with hull D and alt and one with BMM to sell the loot for alts. Then 3 personal fun ships one each. Low running costs crucible should be able to take fuel from captured ships. Hull D only costs when moving and then its carrying a lot. BMM only used to sell. Big ships need focus to use to make money.
You're ahead of me - this is the sort of stuff I am breaking down in the specific profession videos, and even then are somewhat a topic of another day.
@@Leadnap Sorry it wasn't meant to come over as a negative thing. Just as suggestions for alternative thinking for small groups of players. That could help, I liked your video and I was trying to offer suggestions for future things you can cover as you do it really well. Some of those large ships could take a year to grind. When they can work in smaller groups.
@@bezdownunder5481 No offense taken! I was simply saying that you're ahead of my curve here. These are topics that I am covering in videos yet to come in this series!
I'm the kind of player who prefers flying solo even if I play with other people so support ships like the Apollo is probably the max size I'm willing to get. Most of the time I'll most likely just use the eclipse and terrapin anyway, though.
SUB +1. A series about SC _and_ common sense? Count me in. I was laughing through the majority of this. About halfway through the boat story I check to make sure I'd already subscribed from one of your older vids I'd caught -- and horror or _horrors_ , I see a big, fat, red _SUBSCRIBE_ button. WTF, how is that possible? I've enjoyed and liked your stuff before (at least in my head I did), so this is just embarrassing. Anywho, problem solved... Love the sense of humor and appreciate your ability to make compelling, focused arguments. Great stuff. I know none of this wonton (wait - not the soup kind, the adjective kind) flattery will win me a Herc, so I'll stop there and just say thanks. See you on the next!
I have some big ships. Some.. Well, a lot. I guess I have issues haha :D But with all been said in a video I want to add that big ships are safer. Sure everyone will rather take their auroa rather than somebody else BMM. But then grind will hit, the dangers of space lanes, the risks. Yeah big ships are expensive to run. But also safer and more profitable. I'm sure there will be incentives to crew them all right :) And always with those big purchases of jpegs one has to remember - we are supporting the game. It all can be just gone tomorrow as well because risks are always present. Overinvesting emotionally in purchases of GAME assets is not healthy. For me those money are gone forever and I don't dwell on it. So far I been happy though with how things going so I will support CIG some more :)
I appreciate your comment more than people would probably think - because the core of my advice is understanding *how* your fleet will actually be in game. You are 100% right when it comes to supporting the game and the safety of bigger ships. In the broken down videos I'll be able to cover more of that better (which is why I decided to break them out in the first place) but I am certainly also no slouch when it comes to not buying the big ones, I don't personally care about the smaller ones. I want people to buy fleets that they can use, but I want them to also understand, like in real life, if you want to really make the money you're going to have to invest and spend (in game) money to get there. A big ship costs money to maintain - the part people forget now because they don't - but the big ships will also earn.
I have a rule where I will not be buying anything bigger than my corsair (for now :D) and and get ships which provide entry into different professions such as: Vanguard for combat / dropship, Cutlass Red medic, Pieces Shuttle, Mustang starter and my corsair as my Explorer
I do think that is a solid direction to go, though I can never remember if it made it past a cut or not but I do wonder in the realm of a 1:1 game simulation of life how much time most of us would actually have to play different professions? That is what has been nagging at me in my fleet planning process.
It's tough to say - if the game launched exactly like things are right now most ships in the verse would be solo-able ships aside from defense, but CIG will almost certainly add elements to force crew play (they said they would...). The C2 has the smallest crew at 2, the M2 is probably a better call for more armor and one additional mouth to feed (and the Cat with reduced crew). If the BMM's crew holds true it would be the largest cargo ship that can land on planets. The lower Hull's also bring "low crew" but require escorts.
that seems a little involved on your part.. but it sounds like you have it well planned. for me, anything that can’t be conveyed with simple finger paints, is going to add more than a little confusion to my day, but with a hint of some possible future shiny shiny.. i can smile at my own ignorance, and happily add my entry to the pot with everyone else :D
