Star Citizen - Do better coolers make a difference?

There's a lot of debate about how coolers work in Star Citizen, with some claiming they help overheating, some saying cooldown, and others denying they do anything. but what's the real answer?
Forgot to mention in the video - this was tested also without allowing anything to overheat, and the results were the same (just smaller numbers!). Also, not sure why the B-Roll of the titan is so jumpy, sorry!
Here's the numbers: docs.google.co...

Seemed that way to me. Only reason I changed from my Indy coolers to Military on my connie were the incessant warning messages I got about shields overheating, and going down.....although they never actually did. Guessing there is an intended difference at some point but they normalized for now. Thanks for running this test. If anything, I know I wasnt crazy. (about this at least) :)

Cooling (at the moment) is like power - either you have enough, and things work as designed, or you don't, and things fail horribly. There's no benefit for "extra power" or "extra cooling" on ships. Long-term, that is likely not the case. Extra power probably ought to help with capacitor draw, and perhaps the return of overclocking. Extra cooling should help up to the capacity of the coolant in the system. Given SC's love of detail, the "final" cooling system might get rather complex, but the basic thermodynamics would imply that things would cool down faster the more cooling capacity you had. Not to mention things like the external environment should matter - cooling on MicroTech should be "easier" than Aberdeen or in a Vacuum. But until they do a major rework of the cooling mechanics in the game, all you need to do is have "enough" cooling to cover the installed weapons/components and you're good (as you've so clearly demonstrated here)

question, how do coolers effect your ability to be targeted while in a fight? does it effect your ability to stay below the stealth line?
@RobotSpartan
@RobotSpartan Год назад
In short, they don't beyond their own emissions variance affecting your detection range, but thats less relevant since cig flattened the stats
@RedlinePush

I would suggest trying this again with a hornet fully loaded with FL energy cannons. Fully turreted and gimbales, my small cannons would overheat constantly, I upgraded coolers and they do not. This is anecdotal, I'd love to see you put hard number to it.
@RobotSpartan
@RobotSpartan 2 года назад
That to me sounds like you were exceeding the coolers capacity; If the coolers only have enough capacity to provide 50% of the necessary cooling, they will still provide that, but naturally you'll overheat quicker. The subject of this video was more about if they make a difference "if you have enough cooling already", rather than what that scenario you mention would be.

All coolers have the same EM and IR signatures, so what do you mean when you say min/max stealth?
@RobotSpartan
@RobotSpartan 2 года назад
They weren't at the time of recording, they actually had a fair amount of variance. CIG went and made them all the same fairly recently (they did the same with shields and powerplants too for some bizarre reason)

is there any diffrence in component health? maby ship would be more survivable?
@RobotSpartan
@RobotSpartan 2 года назад
There is a slight difference, although it's somewhat negligible. It wont really play a part until physicalised damage becomes a thing (unless you're concerned about people getting inside your ship and shooting components out. That actually does work on some ships!)

hmm I would have been interested in the environment settings......your task was taken in space.....but now we have atmosphere pve battles....and I remember one day watching a player has his prospector shutdown on Daymar due overheat while mining.....now thats a hot atmosphere. And at later day the devs expand the range of cooling atm from your data it points to them all being basically similar and not balanced past yet?
@RobotSpartan
@RobotSpartan 2 года назад
As far as i'm aware, external atmosphere has zero bearing on component temps, but i'll look into it to be certain. That said, whilst i recorded the footage in space (mostly for ease as i was constantly alt tabbing), i did do some follow up tests in atmo on MT (following an unrelated comment someone made on reddit) and found no difference whatsoever. Coolers i don't think have had any balance changes in a long time, although i could be mistaken
@HuhnK0t
@HuhnK0t Год назад
the only vehicle coolers actually make a difference is when you're mining for extendet times in a ROC on arial for example.
@RobotSpartan

not tested any of the vehicle coolers to be fair, so cannot comment either way :)

@mwRafee
@mwRafee 2 года назад
Now you do power management instead. Hold f5 to give full power to weapons
@RobotSpartan
@RobotSpartan 2 года назад
Aye as cosmic said. They removed the OC during the great flattening. I think the intent of OC was always meant to be more in depth, so either we won't see it back until the engineering profession comes online, or at least until they're happy with weapon balance again. The stats for OC'ing are still in all the files, so adding it back should be easy enough i'd imagine.
@TheSiriusEnigma
@TheSiriusEnigma 2 года назад
No they don’t. The reason is that there is a hidden limitation built in the ships themselves. The piping between components is fixed and set by the ships. The capacitors prevent the worse offenders, the weapons, from heating at all. As of 3.17 weapons and components are normalized by grade regardless of type. A grade A shield will be the same regardless if it’s a military, stealth, civilian or industrial.
@RobotSpartan
@RobotSpartan 2 года назад
The piping doesn't actually play any part currently whatsoever. The limit is actually on the components themselves, not the ship. You can show this, but it translates poorly into a video. In the future? Yeah it will likely be set by the ship, but as you say, capacitors negate a lot of that on weapons And aye the flattening sort of nullified this vid a little, but it still serves for newer players who wont have quite as in depth an understanding
@TheSiriusEnigma
@TheSiriusEnigma 2 года назад
@@RobotSpartan prior to 3.15, coolers did make a difference since you could destroy your weapons by overloading them. Internal piping limits were obvious at that point. Since 3.15, I don’t remember having any overheating issues.

Hmm. So the only real consideration for coolers is the draw time, regarding pvp?
@RobotSpartan
@RobotSpartan 2 года назад
Distortion decay rate and the maximum distortion damage (which are new since this was made) technically has some value, as it allows you to take more, and recover from partial distortion damage quicker. otherwise, pretty much yeah As a note, military coolers can take more distortion damage, and dissipate it quicker, but take the longest to recover from full shut down. Competition get shut down easily by distortion, but come back on line much quicker
