Instead of having the larger rear sweeping into a somewhat pointed nose, NOW it looks like someone stepped on a paper towel roll and pasted wings on it. Almost zero external unique style. Looks way too human. But the inside, ohhhh.

Will be very interesting to see the final implementation of this ship. The number of elevators gives an indication of how much thinking needs to go into making sure that the right people have access to only the area they are authorized for. You don't want your market shoppers strolling through the VIP area or have a VIP guest press buttons on the bridge. And nobody should interrupt a Jedi council... ever

I understand the argument you should have known, and I have no dog in this fight I don't care about the BMM -- but let's be crystal clear. Right now, this very day, Monday the 20th of June 2022, the picture on CIG's own website, in their own pledge store, is still that original spiky alien design. The newer concept art you showed IS NOT THERE. Considering how astronomically easy it would be to update that pledge store page with more recent art, that's just a huge fail by CIG, and to some extent I can see why people are complaining they're getting bamboozled.

Honestly, CIG could make the Merchantman look like a deranged platypus wearing a top hat, but it still won’t change how absolutely cool and ground breaking the ship is, and what it represents for the future of the game. If I had the fundage, I’d happily adopt one of my own 😊

The fact that the BMM was a much smaller ship in concept is true. CIG even stated it. It was originally meant to be smaller than the carrack but has ballooned massively post conception. Zin was tight, youuuu were wrong bored!!
@qdaniele97
@qdaniele97 2 года назад
To be fair, most original concept ships grew quite a bit in size and scope along the development process. Mostly because early concepts were just that, concept art, and they didn't use to plan the internal layout before hand like they do now (with concept ships being first show when the white/greybox is almost done).
@IamToast-ei3qt
@IamToast-ei3qt 2 года назад
It makes sense to make a trading ship have less sharp edges and aggressive looking. It looks more inviting than the original concept art, which is what you'd want with a mobile trading post. but forgetting its role, i have to say the original concept looked really bad ass, but again looks too aggressive for a trading post.

@rolasmola9641

The lack of a captains chair might say something about their social structures. IIRC from the lore, the Banu are basically Anarcho-Capitalists, so having a single person in charge might rub them the wrong way. Thus they might use a Pilot - Copilot system like the defender and modern day commercial airliners. The Merchantman is, ostensibly, a merchant vessel after all, not a warship.

@forcommenting1017
@forcommenting1017 2 года назад
@@rolasmola9641 That reasoning isn't sound unfortunately. We have captains, not because we like having someone in charge, but because it is necessary to have someone coordinate the larger picture in a ship of this scale. It would be absolute chaos if we just hoped that everything would work out when there are that many moving parts. That's why mutiny is such a serious crime. The Banu are a communal society and they all strive to be the best, that would extend to someone who is best at controlling the bigger picture. That wouldn't make them "in charge" as we understand, just a being operating in their area of expertise. No one would presume to coordinate better than the "Captain", just as the coordinator wouldn't presume to know how to fly better than the pilot.
@rolasmola9641
@rolasmola9641 2 года назад
@@forcommenting1017 So the established reasoning goes to justify modern day hierarchies and command structures, I am aware. The video was pretty clear, however, that the reason that the Merchantman doesn't have a captain's chair or captain's quarters is due to Banu crews not having a captain at all, for better or worse. Thus they might disagree with you on that, or at the very least find the idea of a captain alien and/or repulsive. (For a species that doesn't seem to find much alien and/or repulsive.) I don't know what this means for how they run their ships. Perhaps the pilot and co-pilot share command responsibilities, with a third crew member serving as a mediator to resolve disagreements between the two, should they arise. Perhaps they have a form of ad hoc, real-time consensus democracy where the entire crew or a designated subset come to decisions collaboratively, in real-time. This has the advantage of not needing enforcement, but has the disadvantage of potentially grinding to a halt if there is dissent. This might not be that big of a deal for most situations, given that it is, in fact, a merchant vessel, not a military one. Or maybe something else entirely, I don't know.
@fiveoneecho

People do not understand how much a different FOV will change the proportions of a ship as well. It looks different, but also most of the concept has been through pretty narrow "lenses," which will always make things look more compact and proportional. Couple that with the very harsh lighting of the walkthrough and the fact that it was a gray-box mesh, and the changes are going to look so much more dramatic. I'm a little sad the bow isn't as much like the gorgeous concept art from 2017 where it's sitting on the circular pad in the middle of that market or town, but I don't think it changed all that much- then again, I watch most all CIG content, so... Edit: Also they changed the exterior to accommodate all that gorgeous interior, which does match the concept pretty well! I've only ever cared about the functionality and the pretty interior if I'm being honest.

For the conference room, the talk we've had about VIP missions makes me suspect that we'll have NPC missions where we need to facilitate them having a meeting. No idea if the AI will be up to it or not, but I think that's the intent for these meeting rooms on the 890 and BMM

I think they should (eventually) allow us to partner (or hire if lore allows it) a Banu to handle the market. That would be awesome. They could give them some voicelines that explaines the lore of the ship or even offers translation services!

I personally (as an owner) find this "New" design really nice. And the nose shape (a little slimmer) was well on my radar. While i find the spiky nose cool, the current design fits in waaay better because if its a trade vessel where super importent deals are forged it shouldnt look intimidating like a vanduul ship. I personally was taken aback by the amount of backlash against the design because like you said the update from 5 years ago looks very close to what was shown in the ISC

The BMM got my attention because I like big ships, and I like the way it looks, both before and after its redesign. I've seen camera angles that can make anything look like a caricature, so I wasn't concerned by the ISC vid showing it as having a disproportionately large nose, since it was just an effect produced by the camera angle. Also, anything that's much larger than a human is going to look much different from a distance than from up-close, like how a pointy front-end from a distance becomes a flat wall up-close.
@disky01

I agree with most of your points vis-a-vis space usage in the ship, but I do think we have to keep in mind that it isn't built for our brains, and the fact that it makes us uncomfortable is part of the design. I don't like the community sleep chamber or the gigantic waste of space that is the turret room, but at the same time, my species didn't build this thing. It's supposed to be coming from a culture and a mind that is not human, and so I do think it gets a pass for some things. I do also think we should be able to adapt the space to human needs, and expect a lot of that "wasted" space to be used for storage or other things.

BoredGamer and Zin awesome show and I enjoyed hearing your comments and feedback on the Merchantman. In my opinion I think the ship is coming along really fine and looks great. Also some backers on the Spectrum forums are complaining too much over the physical design of the ship especially when it comes to the front end and don't realize like you pointed out in the video the views are a bit distorted as they rotate around the ship. I even looked at some of these comments and noticed that many of them are coming from very new backers some barely a year into the game and I don't think these people truly understand what CIG is creating and nor understand the ship matrix have evolved over time. These new backers are not creating any constructive criticism on the ship and are just becoming more of a nuisance on the forums to the point that I understand that one of them got reprimanded by the forums moderators. Now please don't get me wrong I am all for constructive criticism but not criticism to the point that you literally become a nuisance since in the end it serves no purpose and only creates toxicity on the forums. As for some of the open space on the ship especially in the room when you walk into the big main guns in our plan to be there I think that open space on the left and right side will probably be filled with the guns themselves since we're not sure how they will extend up out of the ship and we haven't seen that aspect of it yet. As for the bridge, yes it's big and may be a little too big and I do agree that I wish there was a command chair in there since I think it would add more statement to the ship. However there is one change I would like to see done to the bridge which I think would look a lot better. I think CIG should remove the glass from the bridge and replace it with the same style as it exists on the Talon because it would give them more futuristic look to the ship and make it a bit more threatening to others since they would never know who resides in the fridge unless they board the ship. In essence the ship should have at least some sort of mystery to it and it does make sense that the ship should also share technologies with other species because it's supposed to be a super high advanced ship from the species. Also please forgive some of my ranting especially with some of the people currently on Spectrum, but, frankly I'm getting really sick and tired of it. We veteran backers along with the original backers worked so hard to build spectrum with a Tripoli reading and really do not like people who become toxic and we don't want toxicity existing in our spectrum forums. Since some of this toxicity is coming from new people who have become backers of the game and are bringing in a type of behavior that should never be tolerated. If these people wanna go generate toxicity then go someplace else but not on the RSI Spectrum forums. Thank you again for all this cool information.

As someone who backed from the very beginning I think it's ugly. I thought the original concept art was awesome and that was the dream, there's no argument it's changed a lot from the original concept art. I imagine a lot of people with be melting the ship. While I haven't been to the forums or chat room much in years, they always had a little bit of toxicity from the very beginning. However everyone has a right to share their opinion and I imagine that their would be a fair few that are upset it's so far from concept after so many years. If you only listen to people that agree with you then you won't get the full picture or make a very good product. I think it's too bulky, rounded and solid. The original concept seemed alien, the current one looks like an uglier 890 jump. Don't assume it's only new people that don't like it.

There will be a lot of people upset with this change and some will be vocal, some might break the forum rules. CIG will either stick to their decision or revise it. A few small tweaks could make it a lot better, just give it, it's underbite back like in the 2017 art would be enough for most. How are we not, at this point and time, familiar with the idea of a concept? Concept sketches, concept cars, concept short films (the Halo short film) - NONE of these things are ever immutable, none of these things remains unchanged from start to finish, sometimes there IS no finish. I think it's ok to share opinions but how people feel about this ship finally making it to flyable does not, per se, constitute a forecast of success or failure on CIG's part. The Carrack got bigger and fatter, so has this ship. we've been talking about concept ships growing in size for ages AND we've been doing so excitedly. Just because they had to stretch it here and there to accommodate all the features they promised I don't see how this is a negative at all. My current plan is to rent mine out to clans, but I could seriously see outfitting one as like a small fleet support ship with the ability to swoop in and scoop up life pods, salvage, etc, and supply small scale repair supplies. It has the speed to stay out of range until combat is over, then zoom in and supply services needed, or if on the losing side, zoom in, blast a bit for shock, scoop up as many pods/wreckage as possible, then get out of dodge.

I honestly think this ship will be out this year and is going to surpass the 890J & Carrack. I wouldn't be surprised if the ship reaches $1000 once flight ready. The cargo it can hold is crazy and the hangar looks a really good size. it's on the progress tracker and apparently 5 teams working on it so hopefully I'm right that it will be out this year but I am new to Star Citizen and may be a tad too optimistic.

Ships like BMM will always be polarising, but I really like that it's very _not_ typical human industrial design we see from other manufacturers - it's more organic and flowing lines make sense - and there is considerable room internally to do something other than just lots of claustrophobic narrow corridors everywhere. Designs change over time to accommodate the game state, which is a fairly reasonable expectation. There has to be physical space for cargo, for instance, so that will force certain constraints, but the BMM still looks great and if you ignore _anything_ for years, then changes will always seem greater in one large hit versus incremental.

think a lot of the rooms, most would be like well its cool for lore or some RP thingy. will be used a lot more for its actual purpose. flying around in space meeting random people and you which to make a deal with them. it makes sense you have a room where you can go and focus on just that. since i bet we wont be using discord and such as much as we think we will, when it comes to random or even people we know but dont intent to invite them to a discord and such. its just a nice thing in games to have a room for such things. just take FFXIV lots of Free Companies(ORG's) get a mansion and will either have a private room or part of the mansion act as a meeting room, office and such. so i can really see that lots of such rooms in ships will be used for the correct purpose, the same goes for going on a trip in a luxury ship. its a fun experience in terms of RP as well.

The "spiky nose" would feel more "imposing" from a perspective of "Imma run through you..." and I do like the old design. Thing is, the ships has to be adjusted to accommodate all the interior without changing much of the original size. Let's say that we want to make it more "pointy" it would need another 10m of nose to change that, which would make it way too big for a pad! So it's not just about the design but the intention and purpose of the ship itself (size related)... Things change, that's inevitable! Still love it tho... 😍
@SuperGankBros
@SuperGankBros 2 года назад
Why would you need to change it? There's no accessible space forward of the hangar in the ship. There's nothing forward of the S8 guns in the bow. Why would you need to extend it when nothing is fucking there?
@drgajo
@drgajo 2 года назад
Geometry and physics... Those 2 S8 will take quite a bit of space just to be accommodated inside the structure, which will have to also accommodate all the mechanics involved, that alone will add quite a few extra space. Considering that the exterior needs to reflect this, we're looking at a lot of space. To make the ship look more "pointy" they'd need to prolong the nose even more! Not sure exactly how much, but the BMM increased significantly in size since conception, and to keep it small enough to be able to land in a large pad might be challenging if they don't adjust that... Considering all of that, It might end up a little bit different from the original concept art (more "fat" and less "pointy"), but still close enough... 🙃 I do agree that the art where the BMM has those 2 spikes at the front (with the cloud background), BEST concept art of it. And would LOVE it looked like that, amazing and way more intimidate!

All the discussion and noise reminds me of the fact that ships are way to cheap in SC. Ships of this magnitude should be rare and it should be next to impossible to own one by yourself. Yet, I did a day of money grinding during the free fly and earned an easy 3 million. Two weeks and I'd have the most expensive ship in the game. That's not how it should be. Of course, this may just be an alpha quirk since it allows a lot of testing to be done with big ships, but it also lets people get used to having an amount of wealth that can't persist beyond alpha. Eventually ships like this should be group purchases as they are intended to be operated by groups.

The problem people are having is the dividing line going along the mid of the ship since it makes it look like the entire top can crack off. Removing the dividing line would probably improve the look.

Keep in mind the Banu's civilization was a just a concept too when they released the first draws of the BMM. Basically, they only knew Banu will be an alien trader race, they draw few sketches, that's it. I think that's also why we waited so long for the BMM; it was a too big ship to start building foundations of the race. The Defender built the foundations, the look, etc... That's why the BMM doesn't like an agressive alien's ship now. Banu aren't agressive. Their culture is full of ornements, beauty, showing how they are rich traders,... Honestly, I prefer the BMM now, even if I don't like few things like the nose. I was hyped by the first concept for it agressive alien style. I'm hyped by this design too because it reflects more the Banu's philosophy. That's the same for the size of the ship. It's a lot bigger now but... It's Banu's mothership!

Am I surprised, no I've been following it, am I saddened by it departure form it's original concept, absolutely. Based just on the ship's exterior alone, aside from the fact it still has 2 wings a person who hasn't followed the progress probably wouldn't realize it's the same ship. If this was the original concept art I might not have bought it. A large part of the attraction was it looked alien, now, it hardly looks alien, now it just looks like some rich dude's yacht. Slap 2 wings and a tail fin on an 890 and blur the image. I'm fine with the size changed, I figured it had to get larger for what they wanted to put into it.

Yeah I wish they would compress some space so that the exterior could look as wild as it did in concept. I don't need massive bathrooms and whatnot. I'm thinking the interior will look much better once its in a refined greybox. My biggest gripe is the lack of command chair. If multicrew is half as complex as they seem to want, a ship of this size will not be effective without a "captain". It's not about family or culture, its the practical requirements of running a vessel of this complexity. You're telling me that in a tense combat situation, its all just gonna work out? How could a pilot coordinate with engineering while also coordinating with turret gunners, while also firing forward facing weaponry, while also maneuvering. All while engineering and gunners coordinate as well, while engineering is running around trying to make sure the ship continues to have power, while coordinating with everyone else to allocate power to where its needed on the fly, and also using spit and duct tape to keep the ship in one piece. Its too much for a group to handle without some kind of officer on bigger picture coordination. Then think about humans, without someone to make the decision, we could argue for hours or days in time critical situations. The Banu are worse in this regard because they all want to be the best at what they do, a bunch of "alphas" in the same room, that gets messy. Furthermore the Banu respect people who are good at what they do, someone as a bigger picture coordinator would be a natural part of their society. Plus Banu Souli (like a clan) do have leaders if lore is to be believed, so I don't understand where they pulled this "no command chair" idea from. Its not about culture or in any way that actually makes sense. My feeling is that there will be a "captain" anyways, they just won't have a place to sit, or MFDs they can utilize. So their job just gets harder and its not easy to begin with. I suppose there needs to be some reasons why you wouldn't want a BMM but I am sick of CIG avoiding command seats. Regardless of the many logical reasons I have laid out, the "Captain's Chair" is a big part of the sci-fi fantasy we backed for, the dream that keeps us coming back. It's so strange how sometimes CIG seems to totally get it, yet other times they are woefully ignorant to what the players expect.

I was never really interested much in the BMM, not being a combat ship and all.. so I was not really aware of how it looked in its pre-rework concept form, but I had tried the Defender on several occasions and fell in love with the it. That being said, when I see the BMM now in greybox it feels very Banu-ish to me. My first thought when I saw it was wondering if the landing bay was designed by the Banu to carry one or several Defenders or something. Convoluted story I'll admit, but the point is this.. it seems like it is more true to the current Banu aesthetic to me

What i feel the problem is at CIG is that they have an issue with scaling detail. All concept images of ships look like they are massive because of the details they contain like the spikes and different light and etc. The final product ends up having too smooth of an exterior which would make the 890j look like a snubship if you viewed from a distance if you had never seen one in your life before. They constantly do this which gives these big ships a meh effect ingame. Even the Kraken looked small ingame compared to the pictures on the site. CIG has to work on incorporating imperfections and details in their textures and overal models. I do, however, have faith in CIG that they'll redesign all ships to add more detail after releasing all of them and optimizing the game even further.

Many people complained at the changes then and still are. There doesnt seem to be windows in the front either and it would be very easy for them to at least edit the nose of the ship a bit. IMO the nose is the only bad part about it. It just looks unfinished and plain in addition the the shape. Its totally fair that its not a spike but the whole front end looks lackluster. The wings and backend are clearly far more fleshed out. Imo a slight redsign of the front end to make it match the rest of the ship is almost necessary. It just doesnt fit. Regardless im still glad to have one. Back in the day I dont think I ever could have imagined a ship this complex and large its truly a dream come true

My apologies if this is a duplicate post, but I some how lost my previous one before it posted. I have absolutely no intention of buying the BMM or any other ship for “real money” again until CIG cleans up it’s act! I feel it’s very unethical for CIG to be spending so much effort to enhance it’s “revenue stream” when they continue to “break” each major update, such as 3.17.0 with each subsequent patch. CIG introduced persistent inventory and thirst and hunger meters, and then provide proceeded to break them in 3.17.1. by not being able to eat or drink from the inventory. In order to eat or drink from any inventory, you have to drop the food or drink on the deck and pray it doesn’t disappear. Then you have to grab it from the deck to select eat or drink. How did they do that when those issues weren’t in 3.17.0 PU or the 3.17.1 PTU? I’m a whale, but I will not pledge any thing else until CIG devotes much more effort to Quality Assurance testing beyond that which WE have paid THEM to do for THEM. I will vote with my “dollar” until CIG gets the message.

As a old backer and one whom bought Mechant in its original concept, hate to say, but its new style is acceptable as the old style now looks totally like Vanduul design style and not like Banu style. However, I wouldnt mind if CIG would mix in some lore that Banu Mechantman is composed of many alien styles gathered over the millennia of experience in trading and somehow the ship took on resemblance of Vanduul ships or what.

I do like the changes compared to the concert art but I feel like the nose of the ship is too flat and it makes it look like a platypus. I think you're right Bored, the original concept was very spiky and they tried to make it look as alien as possible, if anything, that concept fits more in line with a Vandul ship. Maybe if they added some more touches and definition to the front of the ship it probably wouldn't look as bad. Overall I think its awesome and can't wait till its in my hangar.
