I had the pleasure of visiting Star City. I stayed the night in visitor housing. The experience was surreal as it was exciting. There is a sense of history mixed with present day as the center still is the hub of astronaut training today

Didn’t see any video footage of the Laika memorial statue in star city? Laika made the largest contribution of all to the cause of science and the exploration of the cosmos. She paid the price with her life. 🙏🐶😢I love your videos. Keep them coming. God bless 🙏

Someone needs to give you a TV show. I would totally get cable if that happened.
@atlasobscura
@atlasobscura 8 лет назад
+Tisha Nortac Wow! Ok, done. I get a TV show you get cable! Or maybe a Roku or Netflix would work. Actually, yeah the show is totally on Netflix! Don't get cable!

+Atlas Obscura Oh thanks so much Dylan I dont even like cable. Maybe you could do a thing on that free late night TV ? Seriously though you need to shop the idea around. Theres like a 10 year old kid here in Atlanta who put a comedy show together from his dads trailer an now he has show offers.

2:55 That centrifuge and 2 others were built by a Swedish company called ASEA, now ABB after a merger with Brown Boveri. The centrifuge pictured is called TsF-18 (18m arm) and was built by ASEA in the 1970s and operational in 1981. ASEA's built the first centrifuge in Russia in the 1960s and it was a copy of a Swedish centrifuge (also made by ASEA)built in the 1950s, that had an 7.25m arm.

Someone needs to make a film about that astronaut left on Mir. It's like The Terminal in Space!

How do you do cool video after cool video? is it exhausting managing to be awesome and educational At the same time or does it come naturally for the Atlas Obscura team? is there a pirate-related video you're planning to do? not that I'm too into pirates, it just surprises me that you haven't done that sort of stuff yet... it would be fitting.
@atlasobscura

Aww thanks CinnamonCari! It IS exhausting! It's actually so much fun, and the videos are a fun way to break up my day doing other Atlas things. Pirates huh? You are right, it is high time for a pirate related video! Ok consider it in the queue!

It is funny, I currently live in a city that was not so much secret, as closed - you could move here only if you worked for an establishment here, because of all the matullurgical and rocket detail plants situated here. It is still a big part of the city's life, even after Ukraine became its own country. Also, it would be more correct if you used just "Эй!"and "Kто-нибудь?" instead of "Здравствуйте" and "кто угодно" (which was my professional itch speaking, sorry).
@atlasobscura
@atlasobscura 8 лет назад
+Red Wow that is pretty amazing! Can visitors come and go as they please or is it more closed than that?
@MargaretKateMarlow

It became open to public after 1991, but it was not the case at all before that, in Soviet times. It must have been an... interesting situation, given it is actually a large city.

+Eric Frayre It's funny, even while they were building amazing equipment, when the cosmonauts asked for extra cars so they could drive around they were told to hitchhike. The USSR had it's eye firmly on the space ball, but not necessarily anywhere else, ha!
