In 2020, we were in a cabin just a few doors down sailing through the Andaman Sea. This is an actual sailing clipper, and as such the ship will heel when moving under wind. The very high lip around the bathroom becomes a necessary feature - one day our itinerary had us setting sail from one island to the next not long before supper, and as we showered before changing for our meal the water was sloshing around inside the bathroom. All part of the experience of being on a clipper style ship! The portholes, especially on the 100-series cabins, make for another fun feature; running north along the coast, our cabin on the starboard side was at about the water line; the ocean was churning around in the window in what some travellers coined the “Star Clipper Washing Machine”. It made for a very calming sound, to be honest, and I slept the deepest sleep I had in a long time. When we turned around and headed south again, the ship of course heeled the opposite way, and our starboard side was now tilted up far above the water line. The first few days we had excellent winds, and were slicing through the water at a pretty good speed - meaning also a pretty noticeable heel. In calmer winds, as we meandered through the stunning islands of Phang Nga Bay, the ship barely tilted a degree or two. The rooms are, as you noted, tiny and perhaps dated compared to larger modern ships. But then, nobody books the Star Clipper to stay in their room. The voyage is all about those lovely sails and the rare and special chance to sail on such a neat ship. Thank you for both videos! The ship tour did the ship justice, and will give prospective travellers a good taste of what to expect.
You summed up our experience precisely. Though, as you note, we only had a slight tilt on our calm voyage. We did sleep great! I agree, cruise cabins are for storing you clothes and grabbing some sleep before heading back out to where all the action and scenery is. Thanks for watching. Happy travels!
Thank you. This cabin almost reminds me of some of the car ferries in Europe. I recall paying extra for a port hole window but most of the time you could only see water. Thanks for your video.
I've really enjoyed both of your videos on the Star Clipper! I've never seen the ship up close. It must be a wonderful experience to sail on her!! Love from Vermont
Hey! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I really love the sails and the small number of passengers. It really is pretty carefree and delightful.
Both of your Star Clipper tour videos are a great preview of what sailing is like on the sister ships, the Clipper and the Flyer. Your tip about bringing a charging pad is a great one!! We always bring lots of multiple outlets, but I like your idea much better.
We normally have 118 next door but booked this cabin next time. Love Star Clipper cruising - we only slept & showered in the cabin & always have the best sleep
Thank you for the cabin tour John! Excellent video. I was on the Christmas Cruise '16 with Star Clipper. From Phuket to Singapore. I had a very cozy cabin aft. Just next to the owner's cabin. So many good memories. Barbecue on the beach. Exploring Penang island. Roaming the streets of Malaca.
