Another good point of the design is that it CAN do a broadside, but given the wedge-shape BOTH broadsides can also be focused forward, bringing a ridiculous amount of firepower to bear on a target in front of it.

Star Trek actually is notorious for having very small crews for their ships for one reason... they didn't want to have to pay for to many extras at the start.

Star Wars having milennia in controlling a galaxy spanning empire/republic... The issue in comparing franchises is that certain themes and limitations are deliberate. Star Wars as Science Fantasy intentionally downplays technology for anachronistic social structures (feudal, indentured servants, knights, princesses,...) although their magical space technology should make it inefficient. Given how smart droids alone are should make it unnecessary. That said the inspiration for the crew complement is probably aircraft carriers. The Nimitz class has 3000 crew and 2000 air wing crew in a fraction of the volume. 1600/300 meters length wise but more times the width and height makes 8 times higher crew complement not so outlandish.

@Resurgent Battlecruiser and? It was a giant space station with a laser on it. You get 4-5 cruisers, send them with loads of quantum torps and you will have the same effect with less cost and more accuracy.
@raijinmeister
@raijinmeister 4 года назад
@Resurgent Battlecruiser You don't need to destroy the planet, just make it uninhabitable. With the yield of 1000 more or less quantum torps, you would make a nuclear winter on any class M planet that would last for thousands of years, not to mention that any structure would be completely pulverized.
@raijinmeister
@raijinmeister 4 года назад
@Resurgent Battlecruiser no problem. Your argument is very good but I'm simply using an in-universe explanation why in the Star Trek perspective a wing of cruisers equipped with some high-yield warheads would do the job way better than the Death Star.

One of my favourite sci-fi capital ships of all time. It's funny to see Trek experts try to make sense of a Star Destroyers. I'm a huge fan of both series, so this was fun to watch, great video. Good job guys!

For each square on an Imperial officer's chest they get an extra square foot of room in their quarters, with the red squares being special since they're worth 2 extra square feet! And three yellow squares gets you a mini-fridge. I might be biased to suggest this, but I think the Kestrel from FTL: Faster Than Light would be an interesting episode.

Others have commented on the crew sizes but here is my take. The Star Destroyer serves as both a battleship and a carrier. A modern carrier the USS Ronald Reagan is 333m long and 77m across. It carries 90 fixed wing and heilcopters with a ships crew of 3,200 and aviation crew of 2,480. so nearly 5.000 personal and they do not have a marine complement for landing actions. The Star Destroyer is 5 times longer and many times wider. It only carries 60 to 70 Tie fighters plus landing craft and shuttles. Total crew is 37,000 which includes officers and pilots down to cooks, cleaners and mechanics. It then carries nearly 10,000 ground troops which do not operate the ship. I really think that the numbers to keep a warship of this size operating in a warzone 24 hours a day 7 days a week would need to be this size. Don't forget also the crew numbers reflect the level of technology at the end of WW2 for starwars, before a lot of miniaturization and advanced computer processing. These are just my thoughts.

A few things, regarding some stuff, as I know the Imperial class fairly well. (Not great, but I've had a soft spot for it, especially after using them in Empire at War...) Anyways, firstly, for crew quarters. I've gotten the impression from both cross sections of this, and from cross sections of the older Venator class, (I have the same book that Samuel has!) that extra crew spaces are on the sides of the main hull flanking the main internal guts. Combine that with compact crew quarters, and the 40k crew complement seems doable. However, I suspect that the ship' screw is still smaller, with maybe 20k being a likely number, and 40k (or more) being for dedicated assault missions. The main gun turrets vary between build batches. The large twin gun turrets were the original version's armament. However, later flight II builds use the octuple turrets seen in the fan model. The octuples from what I remember were slightly less powerful per shot, but allowed for more rapid firing and an increased total damage output per broadside/salvo. Don't think they can be used as anti-fighter weapons, however I do believe the larger amount of individual guns was designed to allow better responses to numerous smaller rebel cruisers. As for engines, the four little ones seem to serve several uses. They're auxiliary ion drives (I think) to provide extra boost thrust and as a backup should the main engines be disabled. However, seeing as they are seen to light up when they go to hyperspace in Empire Strikes Back, they probably have some sort of use in the hyperdrive as well. I've also never gotten the impression that these ships have any business going anything below low orbit. They always have more than enough drop craft to deploy troops, and can remain in orbit to perform a multitude of tasks such as bombardment, preventing enemy reinforcements, catching fleeting enemies (unless they have ion cannons of course...) and just plain being a big looming blot in the sky reminding the rebels on the ground that there's no hope of escape or rescue. Not to mention being on the ground seems like an invitation to sabotage or attempted entrapment. Nice scale chart, really puts in perspective just how massive the Imperial class (and Dreadnought class) really is. Just wish Samuel remembered the Romulan D'deridex class. Always loved this ship. She has a certain sense of invincibility about her that few other sci fi vessels ever achieve. Anyways, another excellent video, Trekyards!

the humans in the Starwars Universe have been traveling around the Galaxy for over 10,000 years, so a star destroyer hovering over the surface of a planet would be no problem

I dunno. When a civilization can instantly materialize food, clothing, and weapons on an industrial scale (24th century Starfleet), create an entire planet from nothing but stellar gas in six minutes(23rd century Starfleet), or can instantly erase an entire civilization from the space-time continuum (Krenim), including everything that civilization has ever done on a galactic scale, and when a species can casually time travel (29th century Starfleet), I'd say they make even the best Star Wars technology look like a 19th century militia. Which is fine, because Star Wars is fantasy, not scifi. I have no problem with fantasy elements and anachronistic technology. This is part of the charm of Star Wars!
@Acrosurge
@Acrosurge 7 лет назад
The context of the discussion is Star Wars Tech vs Star Trek technology. The Krenim and their temporal weapon are a part of the technology produced in Star Trek. And it could eliminate anything from planets, to people, to entire civilizations from the space-time continuum with a single blast. Regarding Starfleet's creation of a planet: you are incorrect. The Genesis device was detonated within a nebula. It removed the nebula and created a planet at its center. The life of the planet was short and unstable, but it was still a planet by any standard and Star Wars has no comparable technology. Nothing even close. And I can't help but notice Star Wars has nothing even remotely like Industrial Replicator technology or Holodeck tech. And nothing like the casual time travel of Star Trek's 29th Century, where even shuttle-sized ships can remove enemy starships from the space-time continuum, or the technology of the 31st century, in which even civilians have access to time manipulation tech (high schools needed temporal discriminators to make sure students were not messing around with time). Heck, the Who universe barely displays such casual use of time manipulation as that last one. Star Wars is creative and cool, but it is not in Trek's league when it comes to tech.

Star Destroyer... yes, love this episode. For crew quarters they probably like real navy ships do a lot of hot bunking. Also they probably have at least two or three full crews running on rotation like a real navy ship would. For size and crew complements the USS Nimitz is 1,092 ft (332.8m) and runs with a crew of over 5000 while the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) is 947.ft and according to Memory Alpha has 450.

Early military sale ships used the term Destroyer to denote ships used to bombard land based targets before deploying marines. The Star Destroyer does the same. The name is pretty accurate... Bombard ground installations to destroy the heavies defenses then drop ground troops with fighter support.

Its full term was torpedo boat destroyer, essentially a gunship meant to tangle with the torpedo boats and keep them away from capital ships. Those two types were then merged and the name reduced to "destroyer". However in many SciFi franchises "destroyer" often denotes big capital ships probably simply because of the name sounding menacing. I'd guess a "star cruiser" could mean a civilian passenger craft for interstellar transport as well, a "star destroyer" implies a major warship. Though Star Wars really cannot decide on this given the Rebel alliance supposedly could do without anything matching what was simply the workhorse of the Imperial navy despite its big size. One would expect them at some point having to match that even if they prefer carriers.

In Star Wars hyperdrives and realspace drives share a lot of parts. Hyperdrives also take up a relatively small percent of the mass of the ship when compared to warp engines, though as they share a lot of parts with the realspace engines it's kind of hard to draw the line. Basically when a ship moves through hyperspace, it still needs its regular engines to push it in the right direction. I assume warp drive would be the same (just because you're warping space doesn't mean you still don't have to move). The Imperial Class Star Destroyer is actually very fast in realspace. I agree with our illustrious hosts that it is not very maneuverable compared to Star Trek ships, but Star Destroyers are fast for any class of ship other than fighter, and really scary fast for their size (this is to catch fleeing ships in tractor beams before they can get far enough away from a planet to jump to hyperspace).

Just a few comments: 1. The VICTORY class Star Destroyer could enter an atmosphere, the ISDs could not. 2. They didn't an aerial assault in the battle of Hoth because a) they wanted to capture the rebels alive, and b) there was a theater shield, which protected from orbital bombardment, (which is why they needed to land walkers a good distance away, then march them under the shield). The Empire didn't have aircraft that were hardened against the cold of Hoth, so those were out of the question. 3. The militaries of Star Wars are paranoid about very high degrees of automation, which is why we see many manual systems; The Separatist ships from the Clone Wars series required no organic crew, and had many fewer crew in general. 4. Hyperspace/Hyperdrive doesn't work like Warp drive, and AFAIK, you enter Hyperspace, then use your conventional engines to propel yourself through it, but you don't have the restrictions of mass and the speed of light limitation, like you do in "real space"... 5. In Star Wars, vessels are typically built by private contractors, and NOT by the actual factions directly - IIRC, the ISDs were built by Kuat Drive Yards - so the Empire would send them specifications, and the contractor would submit designs for approval.

In fairness to biostemm, for a very long time (something like 30 years, if not more) it was canon that a Victory Star Destroyer was the largest starship capable of entering a planetary atmosphere. Ergo, an ISD couldn't. Then Rogue One changed that element of canon.

In Empire Strikes Back, the rebels on Hoth did have ground weapons installations (Ion Cannons) capable of damaging/disabling Star Destroyers and shields capable of deflecting orbital bombardment. They used the weapons to disable Star Destroyers so the evacuation ships could escape. It would have been a mistake to hoover above them in that instance so the ground assault actually makes sense. The ground assault was sent in to knock out the generators powering the shields and weapons.

I was always under the impression that the Type II (Empire Strikes Back) Star Destroyer did not have repulsor-lift engines and therefore could not operate in planetary atmosphere and that the largest Star Destroyer that could was the Victory at 750 meters. The one in Rogue One is a Type I (A New Hope) Star Destroyer with the taller communications tower, so maybe that's the last Impstar that had repulsorlift engines before they were refitted before Empire Strikes Back. Or maybe they just retconned it.

I think, you found a cross section of the Victory-class. That was much smaller and was more built for bombardment. it also had more cannon emplacements in the superstructure.
@Mavairo
@Mavairo 7 лет назад
in old canon, the Victory design is the one capable of atmospheric operation. (the Acclimator which is the ones you see in the prequels, also can.) It's also worth pointing out they have to have serious inertia canceling tech in star wars, as they cross the GALAXY, in weeks or months (Where as Voyager would take 70 years without all the short cuts Janeway took). So it's entirely possible that the Imperial, and maybe even the SSD can perform atmospheric operation. I also wouldn't wanna be the Borg Cube to test a star destroyer in combat, particularly if the ion cannons work in that fight like they do in the SW universe. (all star wars weapons are a form of plasma weapon too, superheated to varying degrees.) I THINK I remember reading that they also had torp tubes, an forward firing fixed guns, toward the bow, in the old rogue squadron series. The Imperial is just cool. Love looking at them. Can you guys do one on the Victory? Seems harder to find good images, and information on the Victory. EDIT apparently the Imp2 can at least move 975km/hr in atmosphere. Jesus lol Another possible to do would be an Emperor class battleship from 40k...

I would imagine that the Stormtroops aboard the Star Destroyer would live in bunks similar to a barracks to maximize living space, and if it is anything like a Modern Day Aircraft carrier that the enlisted crew would likewise share bunk style living quarters as much as 3 bunks high. Cramp for sure.

@trekyards I seem to recall that originally the Enterprise D (and by extension the entire Galaxy-Class) was meant to have a crew of about 15-20 thousand but Roddenberry (or an executive) vetoed that because it would create issues with regards to extras and our bonding with the focus characters (because there would likely be quite a bit more).
@H2Obsession

One of the Enterprise D designers (I forget who, watch the previous TrekYard episodes) said the crew complement should be around 3,000 but (like you said) Gene Roddenberry said that would require too many "extra" actors.

Probably the best thing about this design is that weapons along the front edges of the "triangle" can fire either forward or broadside, which is a big deal in the SW universe. Also those domes are supposed to be shield projectors I think, but I might be wrong on that one.
@000NULL

Oh dear. This one was fun! Some additional data, a wing of TIE fighters, typically 2 fighters squadrons, 1 bomber squadron and 1 scout squadron is the standard compliment. The four secondary engines are backup thrusters. Hyperdrive needs no exhaust. The ventral weapons battery changed between Episode 4 and 5, the first version had 6x2 heavy turbolaser turrets and 2x2 heavy ioncannons. The second version had 8x8 turbolasers. If the star destroyer is angled down all the weapons batteries can superfire. The globe domes uptop are sensor domes. The Vengeance would still wipe the floor with the star destroyer.

Someone else has probably answered this but the reason they didn't blast the rebel base on Hoth from orbit is because Admiral Ozzel entered the system too close to the planet and alerted the rebels of the attack. The rebels turned on the shield forcing the AT-AT's to land a few miles away and take out the generator from the ground.. After that they started dropping landing craft, and Vader, close to the base.

Actually the Imperial class doesn’t have Point defense weapons, that’s what the Tie Fighters are for. The Imperial class is meant purely for anti-capital ship, anti-space station, and orbital bombardment combat. The idea being to bring overwhelming firepower, having a frontline ship that can rip the enemy to shreds.

When you think military, don't think comfort. Everybody got use to watching Star Trek TNG with personal living in whole apartment size quarters. On a standard Nimitz class aircraft carrier has a crew of over 4,000, and that is around the length of Constitution Class Enterprise. If a ship that small can carry over 4,000, then a star destroyer can comfortably fit of 37,000 crew members.

That must be a Voyager Borg cube, because I remember the original cube was supposed to be around 28 cubic kilometers (which is a little over 3000 meters on each side) and that's what maybe one? Though the SD is still probably only a third the volume of even that size cube. But Borg cubes and spheres do vary in size depending on how they are being used in the shows and movies. it actually makes sense they wouldn't be a standard size given the nature of the Borg though, as I imagine they have ships much bigger than even the big cubes. Hell maybe they even have small planet sized ships that are capable of traveling around the galaxy for all we know.

Star destroyers - such iconic ships, great to see them here! Although Star Wars had some very cool shots of them, I always felt like the portrayal in the movies never really did them justice. After all, for all their oh-so-great armaments, they frequently get tricked by an old smuggler vessel. Like the Stormtroopers and most of the empire - these things were successfully designed to look imposing and grand - but in the actualy scenes they were featured in, they always seemed just incompetent and useless for the most part.

Love y'all, but the feedback about the cubeship is correct. Seven of Nine's mom said the first cube they encountered was 27 cubic klicks in volume; i.e., a bit over 3 km per side. That matches the cubes in TNG, First Contact and the rest of VGR rather nicely :) Also, recall that the destroyer nomenclature refers to its role in a wet navy fleet, only in space. Much bigger ships, like the Executor, would be the equivalent of "star" dreadnoughts. Indeed, we typically call them, rather colloquially, Super Star Destroyers -- but that's largely because Executor and her ilk are basically vastly upscaled versions of the many smaller dagger-shaped Imperial ships.

The big engines provide forward thrust/movement. The small engines are kind of like rudders in that they help the ship to turn. The Hyperdrive is located in that spine above the engines. It works kind of like Warp Drive in that it doesn't need an engine to achieve FTL. It makes use of Hyperspace, which is an alternate dimension of space time in Star Wars that allows travel through space at speeds much faster than light. This enables the ship to travel vast distances in a relatively very short amount of time, about 15 days, give or take a day or two.

I would guess the reason these star destroyers seldom go into low atmospheric positions is because the vast amount of energy used to maintain itself there, leaving it vulnerable to surface attack (like you guys said anti-grav systems). Probably it was hovering over Jedha to quickly obtain kyber crystals or preform some function before the city gets destroyed. Also Hoth had that giant Ion cannon that could disable these star destroyers with one shot, is likely the reason they did not attempt to inter low orbit (in Empire).

Regarding not being seen in atmosphere above Hoth: remember the Ion Cannon - the Star Destroyers couldn't approach the base without getting fried. I always wondered how they landed the AT-ATs and troopers to begin with, they probably 'landed' one outside of the Ion Cannon's range and marched there, while the remainder blockaded outside of that cannon's range.

The other thing I was slightly reminded of with the Star Destroyers is the Aztec & Mayan Step Pyramids. If Star Destroyers Hangers did have physical doors one place they might be in in the actual hanger walls - those large slab pieces on the internal hanger wall might be the storage placement for the doors - and they come down and filter through the floor and along in segments like a garage door to cover the gap. there is a suggestion that there are other hangers and other doors to launch the larger craft. but without a sense of scale it's hard to say if they use the main bay for everything including Pre-fab base deployment and the ATAT Transports. Though it might be possible to lower ATATs down with tractors or even chains if the ship is in an atmosphere at the time. especially if it's equipping a garrison rather than on general patrol.

Remember that a US aircraft carrier has a crew of 5000, and it's the size of the Conny.... so yes, they can cram a LOT of crew into a small space. Ent-D was originally designed, as you've discussed, to have a crew of 4000, but Gene nixed that idea because of lack of extras. Doing some quick scaling, it would seem that the SD is about 100 decks high at the rear, and a mile long (1600m)... and probably 600m wide... so we're talking about 12 city blocks in surface area of floor space... and averaging filling that with 30 story buildings.... that's a LOT of volume for people, hangers, storage, etc. Just my thoughts, NOM

Something that I note at 26:51 is that the actual crew of the star destroyer is 275 (The officers , vehicle maintenance, and gun crews) plus thier fighter crews of 117 meaning that just under half of the listed crew has nothing to do with running the vessel. in a fight or otherwise and are ground troops the the star destroyer would deliver to the planet.

Destroyer is a class of ship. Smaller than a cruiser and a dreadnought or battleship. Star is just added like "starship". For example, "star cruiser," and "star dreadnought." The "star" prefix just makes it sound more larger and ominous than "spaceship," or "space destroyer."

When you consider the standard complement for a Nimitz class aircraft carrier is around 6,000 (including aircrew). The carrier also has a massive internal hangar to service the numerous aircraft types she carries. I think there's a good probability that a Star Destroyer could have a complement in the 40,000 personnel range.

I know a huge amount of Trek vs Wars comparisons of ships seem to rely on some technical guides. I often got the sense they got carried away with the Star Wars guide coming up with the power of the turbolasers and kept adding zeros to the end - because a shot from one of those now seems to have the impact of several nukes.

The reason it did not go into the atmosphere in Empire to capture the Rebel base was: The energy shield preventing direct landing. The Empire wanted to interdict traffic out of the base. They can't do that if they are on the ground. They could have used Ties but I think they wanted to use tractor beams to capture the transports.

I wouldnt say Star Trek is more advanced as Star Wars just per se. We dont have any numbers of actual power outputs, field strengts and so forth ... we see phrases like hyper matter engines/ reactors ... and look at these crystals they use in lightsabers and for that doomsday laser on the deathstar. Star Wars is in part dealing with some other kind of technology or physics here for sure.

I believe a destroyer was a class of ship meant to intercept and destroy submarines, torpedoes and aircraft attacking the fleet. So a Star Destroyer not only has nothing to do with destroying a star but may also be named after the wrong class of ship.
@gazzmilsom
@gazzmilsom 7 лет назад
Steven Schneider a destroyer is/was a torpedo boat destroyer, anti sub platform, anti air platform, anti surface platform. they have been 4000 ton ships, 250 ton ships and 20000 ton aircraft carriers (if you ask today's Japanese navy). they have been what frigates are now and what cruisers were, been escorts and escorted. Destroyer means a huge number of things depending on the time period and what a country feels like calling it's warships at the moment. so why not star destroyer the word is pretty meaningless overall.
@DrayseSchneider
@DrayseSchneider 7 лет назад
Gareth Milsom Conversely, why call a ship a Destroyer at all if the name is so meaningless? Even if the name still has meaning, and isn't just a loose catch-all to substitute for phallus size, would a Destroyer even be a useful concept in a militaristic space fleet? www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/spacewarship.php#id--Ship_Types

Bubo 25 Destroyer and Cruiser does seem to be used interchangeably regarding these ships. I don't know if the name "Star Destroyer" came about for the reasons you stated though even if does sound plausible. starwars.com starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Destroyer
@gazzmilsom
@gazzmilsom 7 лет назад
Steven Schneider its useful in the right context. In western navy's a destroyer is a large "escort" ship generally with a specialisation towards air defence. In others it could be multirole. In Iran its a corvette given a more impressive name.

Gareth Milsom But there is still the question of the necessity of such a vessel in a space fleet when there's only the one medium that spacecraft, and we're talking non atmospheric here, operate in. Especially seeing that there is no stealth in space, you can see your enemy long before they ever reach you and everybody can track everybody else's movements. www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/spacewardetect.php%EF%BB%BF

A lot of planets in the star wars universe ,especially the more populous ones, have planetary shielding which protects from star destroyer bombardments,thus the AT-ATs and ground assault forces.Echo base on Hoth had such a shield which when it was destroyed the rebels scattered like flys.

The reason that the Star Destroyers didn't enter Hoth's atmosphere was because of the planetary shield. No ship in SW that I know of can pass through a defense shield with repulser lifts. The phantom menace is a perfect example the MTT's couldn't go through the sheild the gungans had because of their repulsor lifts only the slow ground-based battle droids could.

There are some on Coruscant in specialised landing bays, and there's one landed at the back of the Kashyyk scene (which really helps sell it on the size because you just don't notice it at first because its so big!) * Which you should totally do a a fleet yards on. Better looking ship imo. :D

The render you use is an Imperial 2 class. It unfortunately does not have point defense turrets, it relies on its TIE wing to screen fighters, those are twin linked, quad turbolasers (light or medium) to ravage capital ships. It carries hundreds of turbolasers of various sizes. The imperial 1 (identified by the x shaped antenna above the bridge) has anti-fighter turrets

It’s simple: the enterprise D is one third in length. Let’s just assume that the volume per length ration for bot is the same. The volume of the STar Destroyer is 3x3x3 = 27 times the volume of the enterprise D. The D can take comfortably accommodate roughly around 1000 people. The Star Destroyer has 27 Times the volume. So it can very conveniently accommodate 27000 people. Let’s not forget that the volume per length ratio of the Star Destroyer is bigger than that of the Enterprise D. And people could easily be cramped closer together than in an Enterprise D. So the numbers add up!

Actually there was expplanation for why ships in SW have such big crews. It was tated that at one point in history ships were highly automated to a point where one preson could control entire fleet. Unfortunatly after few mischaps when one mad commander could destroy entire fleet and some AI uprisigs this was changes into more manual operations. This also helped agains boarding actions.

IIRC, Vader was pissed one of the captains jumped in too close to Hoth, alerting the rebels. If the Empire had gotten the jump on them there's a good chance the battle of Hoth would have had no ground invasion, just orbital bombardment of their surface to space ion cannon and theater shield followed by a mop up operation

I have long thought about a cross universe fight between the two. A ground battle would have to go to the Empire, at a crew size of 40k, the Federation would put up a good fight, especially after a war like the war in ds9. However, in terms of weapons, the only thing that would break those shields would be a super laser, due to the power of the kaiber crystals. The borg would rip it apart, especially a tactical cube or any version of fusion cube. The empire also lacks the shield power to withstand something as disroupters and phasers, as in the later case of the Federation. While the lasers will do some damage, in the end it would not be enough. Their advantage would be those squads of ties, the numbers each ship can bring to the theater of battle would make them a threat as the federation does not have attack wings with those kinds of numbers. The Remans, however, do have those equal numbers, which would be able to turn the tides. over all, the empire has the numbers, with out something like the death star, even with the super star destroyers, throw the borg or any number of alien races into it, the would be drove back, assimilated, or even obliterated. especially even with the 25th century ships.

Another channel did their take on Empire vs Borg. I can't recall if they used a star destroyer or the death star, but their conclusion was Imperial win! Their mistake was just looking at firepower. I pointed out, in my comment, that the Galactic Empire doesn't have transporters, doesn't know transporter technology, so doesn't have SHIELDS against transporters: so, while the Empire may very well destroy the cube, their OWN SHIP will have been thoroughly boarded by Borg drones assimilating crew & technology. My conclusion was: the Imperial ship may very well fly off the "victor", but it would arrive at its next destination & announce: "We are the Borg. Resistance is futile."

You guys questioned whether a ship the size of the Constitution class is the right kind of size for a 5 year mission stating it is the size of an aircraft carrier. Aircraft carriers can stay at sea for 70 days before re-supply with a crew of 6000. The Constitution class has a crew of approximately 300 which is 1/20 of the crew. Assuming a similar allowance for food storage that would lead to the Constitution class being able to stay in continuous service for 1440 days a a time or just under 4 years at a time, in theory at least as we know from the original series the Enterprise made several stops at star-bases where they could be re-supplied during that 5 year mission.

Was that that proper size for a typical Borg Cube (if there is such a thing)? I thought they were over 3 kilometers in length, width, and height (as mentioned in Voy: Dark Frontier). That would be triple the length of a Star Destroyer and possibly rival a Super Star Destroyer in volume (or 27 cubic kilometers).
