Man, for 1997, this game was hella cinematic. Everything from the voice acting, to the epic music, boss encounters, and just the overall presentation and feel of the game, this game had such a presence to it. Part of what made me love it so much. Favorite line in this whole game: *"I CAN'T BELIEVE I LOST TO THIS SCUUUUM!!"*
The controls were really tight, but the environments, even when I bought the game when it came out, didn't impress me except for the Independence day mothership level.
Duncan Van Ooyen The voice acting also surprised me since many Japanese games around 1995-1997 (even into 1998) had bad dubs. Star Fox 64 sounds pretty good in comparison.
I remember reading that the only American voice Miyamoto and the Japanese team ended up not liking was the voice of Bill, but I remember them saying that they enjoyed playing the version of the game with Japanese Text but American Voices. I've never played the JPN version of the game, but I assume that is a build/ROM that has never been released to the public.
Ikr this game was so great for it's time and revolutionary showing what the N64 can truly handle! I feel like people sleep on this game it was so fun for the switch we should get a remark or a virtual console version after playing starlink I didnt get the star fox vibe from 64 and the 3ds remake
The one that gets me is the "What's wrong fox?" as he looks around and he replies "nothing, nothing is wrong". Nobody saw him, but for him he was there T_T
Foxs father kind reminds me of my own father. Who would have guess I’d lose my father too? Sometimes I dream of him encouraging me to never give up and follow my heart. He’d even say “you’ve become a better person than I could ever be sweetie”
@@personalejcr It’s possible that when James choose to appear, only the persons he directly knew before his death (Like Fox and Andross) would be able to see him. However, he vanished when Fox came out of Venom, hence why Peppy couldn’t see him.
+Hank Voight I knew I wasn't the only one who thought that. I'm like "yo Slip, does that mean I'm having to save your ass at each moment or...?". He's a pain!
I learned my first english words with this game, i used to repeat everything they say. Star Fox 64 is one of the game i will never forget in my entire life.
The moment you realize that Slippy was roasting Star Wolf team when he says “nice aircraft, guys”. He says it after two Star Wolf ships got shot down in one minute.
I remember it being a hot summer day when my mom drove my friend and I to the mall to get this. We ended up playing it late into the night as all of the thunderstorms rolled in. One of those memories that I will never forget.
I remember pulling an all nighter with friends damn near every weekend when this game came out. Staying up late, trying to be quiet, sneaking into the kitchen to eat cold pizza and drink Pepsi lol I’ll have gas all week if I do that now in my 30s. What a time it was
@@Cyrx686 The fact you can change your story route during gameplay dynamicly with diferent actions, fully voiced characters with perfect feeling to the story, there's even some roguelike aspects to it, since everytime you play it its gonna be different and there's things to look out for, such as crew member's HP and things like that. I still remember when i passed that mission in that planet where Bill shows up, "Accomplyshed" it, and then he showed up later, not doing much, but he was there Things like that don't just show up on your mind when you're making a game, its like features you do for love, or with great creativity
@@derago-dev None of those really sound new for the time. There were flight simulators with dynamic campaigns, Falcon 3.0 came out in 1991. The arching story was done in Wing Commander for example in 1990. The crew management was done in B17 Flying Fortress in 1992. It's may be a fine game but it was totally of its time.
For an N64 game, I'm still amazed by how epic the dogfight battles are and how much they managed to fit that many enemies on the screen at once. We rarely see anything like that today besides Ace Combat 7, Starwars Battlefront 2, and Starwars Squadrons.
This video should serve as a prime example of the dedication and planning that creates the perfect longplay video. The video was recorded properly and completely. The choice of many different video qualities allows for an enjoyable viewing experience. The attention to detail with the guide allowing skipping to a place in the video to view a particular segment and the detailed guide in the accompanying video description is the gold standard for helping people. I applaud your hard work and persistence!
Vitani168980 Indeed. He pays so much attention to detail in all three levels of difficulty. The quality in audio and picture is great and detail is down to a specific number. This is true dedication.
The characters that have music related names are General Pepper, Falco Lombardi and Andross. Good that they didn't name Gen. Pepper "Sgt. Pepper" and good that they did not name Andross "Vandross."
Baroque Obama Didn't give that much thought. Thanks for pointing that out. :-) I sort of did think Andross was a reference to Luther Vandross. I did not know about Falco and Gen. Pepper.
Baroque Obama Also, Macbeth is named after the Shakespeare play, and Titania is named after the character in said play. Then the game has Bolse and Katina referencing the Independence Day film, with Katina's mothership and the shielded Bolse Fighters.
Ok ladies, for those that genuinely give a fk bout what I said (like 1% of ya) I BEAT THIS GAME AT 9 years old both right and left sagas. Some of you don’t kno da diff between Completed and Accomplished dats y u can’t PULLOUT 500 RT NOW. Hold dat L no blizzy u tight GG
I always find the Mecha Boss of Corneria hilarious since everyone knows their weak point and immediately shoots the legs. All I can think of the Commander going "Ah so this is Star Fox?" as his entire cockpit tilts forward before he faceplants. Like his brain doesn't even have time to process how quickly they are wrecking him.
When you get to the point where you're too good, shooting his legs 🦵 gets boring 😴. Instead I'd disarm him first, then shoot the legs, then finish him.
The music at 8:11 was always so relieving to hear. And when the words, "MISSION COMPLETE" stamped acrossed the screen that's when I felt like I actually accomplished something. And not to be lame, but when Peppy says, "You're becoming more like your father"... it gets me. Hell of a game.
Not to be a dick, but it says "Mission ACCOMPLISHED" when you get above the correct number of kills, and keeping your allies alive...It says "Mission Complete" if you don't get the medal.
@@CellarDoorx06 Not to be a dick, but "Mission Accomplished" is when you complete a level _and_ meet the requirements to advance to a harder route. For example, entering the warp in Meteo instead of fighting the boss, or defeating Star Wolf on Fortuna before the bomb detonates. Some levels like Aquas or Solar only have one exit, so they always show "Mission Accomplished".
Never realized as a kid that fox was being guided by the spirit of his father on the last level. I thought his father was actually alive but now it seems obvious that he died and and was actually his guardian angel. Well done starfox 64 some deep shit going on.
Intentionally left ambiguous for emotional impact, but yeah, that's what's being communicated here. Wish more storytellers used understatement as a storytelling convention more, especially in games.
This was such an incredible game. Not just the graphics, and the extensive world they created but this thing had SOUL man. The creators were really passionate making this game. Thank you creators, and Nintendo
Durell Jacque I always get anxious when I play through Zoness because of the searchlights. If you miss one, you get caught and more enemies will appear. But I love Katt.
agreed i was like 6 or 7 when i first played this game my memories are so vauge of this game i remember playin my n64 alot before i got that game unfortanetly our n64 broke and we could only rent the game for a few days renting an n64 game back in the day was alot of money for kids like 2$ or3$
"This is horrible". You know, I've heard this line literally hundreds of times, and only now as an adult do I really agree. I mean, a major city is just in ruins and millions of civilians are probably dead. I mean, I knew that as a kid, but didn't have the emotional capacity to really think about it. Funny how that works. Side note: whoever voices Falco is actually a pretty good voice-actor.
psychotrip Damn...you got a point. I owned this as a kid and played it RELIGIOUSLY, so much so that still to this day i play every game that requires aiming with y inverted. But to your point i never payed too much attention to the devastation in stage 1 because i was so engrossed in an incredible gameplay experience
Crazy how 2 decades ago we didn't pay much attention to the graphics, we just wanted to have fun and beat the game as soon as possible and it was largely enough. Good times
Well, it makes since. 2 decades ago the concept of 3D games was brand new. We had no expectations because our minds were blown to a whole new concept of gaming. Mario 64 revolutionized the gaming industry for this reason. The reasons 64 is so iconic is because it is what introduced us to the foundation of what gaming has become today.
The fact that music plays for the entire escape after the last boss, but goes complete silence when James says "you've become so strong Fox" makes it so good.
That's one of the few levels I CAN get a medal on. There's SO much to shoot. Just mash the A button. It's the simple levels like Corneria that I found the hardest.
Nah, that was easy for me. The hardest planet in my opinion is Titania (or that place you save Slippy at). Probably because I'm terrible in a tank, but... then again, there's a crap ton of... EVERYTHING in your path!!!
Funny thing, if you round up the money General Pepper owes to the amount of Venom troops you destroyed, Star Fox charges $64 Cornerian dollars for every troop they destroy. 64, get it? XD
Man I will always love this game!!! All I see is me playin' this game all over again. When I found out Rick May passed away from COVID-19 I was hurt! As I watch this, I hear him say, "Never Give Up! Trust Your Instincts!!!!" He means this is SO MANY WAYS!!!! Sleep In Eternal Power Rick May!!! Your Legacy Will Forever Live On!!!!! ❤💎💜💎❤
I played this game 22 years ago. Today was the day I realized there were multiple endings, routes and worlds. This just blew my mind, I had no idea there were multiple endings!
This heavily implies that the Lylat system has had contact with the Sol system and knows about Earth culture and history to such an extent that they use it in their vernacular.
This game had a much more "serious" atmosphere to it, (intro, mission briefing, soundtrack) not that the new remakes are bad, but the way this game was made is just remarkable!
The N64 graphics and the way things are animated makes a lot of environments and enemies really creepy actually, especially in the sector X space base, aquas and the warp zones.
Honestly, many of the phrases said by the characters within Star Fox 64 still echo in my mind today. The voice acting was iconic. Pigma's "that reward's as good as mine!!!" was one of my favorite. I used to really enjoy the challenge of fighting against Starwolf and his team when I played this as a kid in the late 90s. That and the feeling of both horrid and relief of fighting and defeating Andros at the end.
Nostalgia. Beaten this game entirely and still own the cartridge. I remember when this was brand new. One of the coolest games back then, and is still the best Star Fox to date. Filled with so many iconic lines. From what I heard, the actor of Peppy passed. RIP
The N64 really rivals the PS2 in terms of smooth polygons and graphics quality. The PS2 has way more detail but the N64 has the basic power with less polygons which some people like. It came out 4 years earlier too
My first video game was Wipeout 64 with Arwing-like ships, but I preferred the real deal although Wipeout is actually more fun, intense, cool and has better weapons and music as well as faster ships.
Facts. Its crazy how when Fox flys out the tunnel after defeating Andross his father's jet disappears. And then Fox starts looking for him in the sky 🥺.
Fox:Check your G-diffuser systems. Falco: Im fine *Moments Later* Falco: There's something wrong with the G-diffuser systems!! Lol how did this guy even get his wings??
Played this game hardcore back in 1997 when i was 9 years old.. Now I'm 32 years old and play it in my rehearsal room after playing guitar and drinking some alcohol.. still mastering the hard route. so much nostalgia every fucking time.
Wow! when I played this game when I was young, I never went through the blue-marine, Katt, and James McCloud on Venom route, watching that part blew my mind. Star Fox 64 is truly one of the best video games ever.
I still remember being 8 and going to our regular grocery store and seeing a Nintendo station set up one day out of nowhere to promote the N64 launch. Of course I went and was blown away by this game. They let me play one level and I knew it was gonna be something I play for a long long time.
@@scintillam_deiNot that kind of park. And please don't reply with "Rosa Parks wants to know your location too." Besides, how can Rosa Parks want to know my location if she has long since passed away?
Jeeze. I remember when this game first came out. A good friend of mine at the time, ran out to Blockbuster and rented it. And then we spent the whole night playing it. Good times. Thanks for uploading
Dude. I am tearing up a bit watching this. This was one of my absolute favorite games growing up. This game represents a good chunk of my childhood. I love this game.
One of my favorite games of all times. I remember beating Starwolf so quick in Fortuna that I messed up the dialogue order and Fox ended up saying: - I'll take care of the bomb now. - Let's take care of these guys first
I feel like I just took a gut shot after it hit me this was almost 25 years ago... God the mid to late 90s were so fun. One of my folks pointed out how we would be outside all day doing whatever NOT connected to phones and still found time for n64 but didn't over take our world. Okay someone needs to get on the time machine gimmick because I'm missing the 90s bad now😂😂
I played this game from 2014-2018 and I’m only 14 but I still have very nostalgic memories from this game. I beat this game over 80 times. What a masterpiece this was.
Same here. My sixth grade year, I had the same exact problem. Sad to say, given that my family and I were poor, the N64 was the only way to entertain myself in middle school. This was in 2008-09.
@@rottenstinkyegg I put the timestamps in the comments section for mobile users because the timestamps don't work in the description if you're on a phone.
Thank you for all the helpful tips in my youth Rick May (voice actor of Peppy, Andross, and even Soldier from TF2). May you do all the barrel rolls and rocket jumps in heaven
Thanks for making this video. I’ve been looking for a 100% walkthrough of StarFox 64 for years. I’m glad I can finally get the nostalgia that has eluded me for years!
when i was young i had no idea about english, now reading all the text box make sense to the game, thankyou for uploading this, i had good memories for the game :D
My brother and I got it on release back in the day. We were at a family reunion in Washington state and went to the small town mall and got the game. We didn’t have the console with us of course so we just salivated over the box. I remember the box was extra large to hold the rumble pack. Man. Watching this brings back so many good memories
The writing behind andross as a villain is brilliant. Him being a brain with only eyes at the end? Him saying he will bring fox down no matter the cost???? And fox escaping by following the spirit of his father bc love conquers all? Amazing.
This game was my childhood. I played and loved it everyday of my life. Even to this day this game still remains my number one favorite of all time. Good times.
James Mccloud is Bardock Andross is Freezer,Bill is Krillin without deaths,Peppy is like Ten Shin Han,Pigma is like Tao Pai Pai,Katt is like Lunch/Launch and Bulma...
I’m nearly 30 this year and I’m so glad I grew up in the time I did with this console and game! Still have my original, can’t wait for my kids to play it one day.
I use to play this game with my bestfriend all day as kids. Just lost him to cancer recently watching this has brought great memories back thanks for this.
damn two days ago i just hungout with by best friend after almost 3 years of not hanging out with him due to corona virus, we just finished sec 2/grade 8 and just staryed summer vacation, in fact we hungout on the first day of sunmer vacation. best way to start it imho.
Christmas 1998... I found a N64, a blue controller, a rumble pack and Lylat Wars under the tree.. It was a beginning of something wonderful. I played this game hundred and hundred of hours and felt like the Hulk when I first defeated Andross. I can still feel my heart beat and my hands shaking when I arrived Venom the first time, I was so excited 🤭 such a masterpiece ❤️
Prior to joining Star Fox Falco was a member of a gang led by Katt. It's also implied that Zoness was the homeworld of both of them, hence why Katt shows up there and why Falco sounds so depressed at the start of the level. Other than that there's very little to it on Falco's part - while Katt later expresses interest in a relationship with him in a canon manga set after SF64, it's one-sided on her part and he just considers her an old acquaintance, ergo he turns down the suggestion.
This game is a master class in encouraging multiple playthroughs. Quick bursts of tons of fun, whether you're super skilled or not. A classic, for sure.
