I was in a job interview today. The interviewing manager handed me his laptop and said, "I want you to try and sell this to me." So I put the laptop under my arm, walked out of the building, and went home. Eventually he called my mobile and said, "Bring it back here right now!" I said, "$200 and it's yours”
Agreed. This format should be used sparingly in tandem with practical application questions and/or demonstrations pertinent to the job. Using this method by itself is very soul crushing. It can, and will prevent good candidates from getting a job, especially if they do not interview well in general.
I had an interview for a phone banker position yesterday and I was offered the job today ! With the combination of all your tips and techniques from your videos, I was able to nail my interview. Thank you for being apart of the RU-vid community and helping people like me become successful!
Thanks for the video. It all goes to show that the interview process in most western countries is a "game" and an "art". My wife started her working career in Ukraine as a Web Designer and she said that companies will generally look at your cv/resume and give you a 5 minute basic interview, then if all went well they will employ you for two weeks and assess if you can actually do the job. After that they decide if they want to offer you an full employment contract.
If they can get fired without solid reason (exactlly why the employee can't do the job, not just they can't do the job, and didn't provide opportunity to train them), I think that put all the advantage to the employer, because the employee needs to quit their job (if they had one) to go to the new job. Unless there are laws that require the employer to rehire them after two weeks? Even if there are laws, they know now the employee is looking to quit and the new employer fired them, so there's a good chance they'll find a reason to fire them anyway. Basically, it will make people afraid to quit their job to look for a better one. I usually look for a new position after a year of my current position, and where I work we have a two-year evaluation period, but it must be serious enough to get fired. P.S. I'm glad your wife is safe.
@@LoskiTheFirst But "good worker" can mean different things to different people. The outgoing boss might think that outgoing people are good workers, the lazy boss might not want his employees to work harder than they do, so maybe the laziest people are "good workers." Therefore, the employer should never allow people to be fired based on their preferences. And if you lie on your resume or interview, you can be legally fired at any time.
I was listening to this as I was prepping for an interview since I know I choked on at least one STAR question in my previous interview. My interview is for a job helping newly released inmates find work, so I was really happy to see not just this video but also that you have an entire course laid out although I don't have time to check it out now, I suspect it's going to be very useful in the future so thanks.
I never knew this bloody STAR format ! I passed the technical round, I passed the written test, I passed everything ! Every damn thing but I lost in the final round when they said you need to answer in STAR format and I never knew this. They asked me situational questions and I was rejected. I went neurotic for a while when I got to know I was rejected. It was a dream job that I came this close to getting it and didn’t qualify because of a bloody analytical question. Life sucks but I’m now gonna be equipped with this and I won’t stop !!! Until I die I’ll never give up ! 😭😭😭
I really appreciate you taking the time to provide this great information. Times have changed...and giving basic or generic responses, will not land the job that you desire. Very insightful!
After working at the same company for over 30 years, and an office closing, I was totally unaware of these STAR interviews. I appreciate your information and will be using your advice on my STAR interview this week.
I meant to write this a year ago, but this video really did help me pass my interview!! Now I'm in a position I love - highly recommend, especially if you find the STAR Format frustrating.
These answers are very helpful. They each provides a skeleton for a certain type of question and all you need to do to make your answer is to fill in your stories to it.
Two years later and people are still listening. I can tell that you are invested in your path of helping others with employment. So thank you for your expertise. Not everyone has a knack for it.
Thank you for the tips i havr a really big interview coming up and I've been so stressed about this has definitely given me more confidence !!! Wish me luck 🙏🙏😊
I want to say thank you. I prepared for a big interview at American Express using your videos. I never knew how badly I was unprepared before hand but you Sir helped me get the job! Keep doing what your doing you’re changing lives every day, I assure you 👍
To reply to person asking some questions - female, Australia, age 63. I watch this program every Sunday on TV called SBS Pop Asia. Show goes for approx 60 minutes and that’s where I saw BTS. I’m not actually into SNL shows. So you see I watch them regularly and watch RU-vid. Hope I’ve explained things a bit better this time and I hope this message gets to you.
I have several interviews coming up in a week. I have been out of work for a about 10 years and wasn't sure what to expect. I had a couple of phone interviews and guess they were ok because I'm moving forward. The questions they asked me were just like in your video. Thanks and I have some research to do. Last time I was hired you went to the company, filled out an application, met with the boss and you knew in a couple of days if you got hired. No phone. No email. This was before the internet. Oh boy I'm in trouble. Lol
This was very helpful. I have done Star Interviews before but this helped me really know what to focus on and how specifically to answer the questions being asked. It also helped me see how I may have been handling these questions incorrectly. Thanks!
Really glad it helped! What interview are you applying for? :) I have this for you too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2n13nDfSGXw.html Please would you SUBSCRIBE to my channel? I'd very much appreciate your support. Thank you! Richard 🙏
This is extremely helpful! However I am not good on the spot and I got a last minute interview later today and haven’t had much time to prepare for the STAR questions. I am also not good “on the spot” any tips or tricks to help me out?? Thank you!
@@CareerVidz is called a train presentation though I applied for a night cleaning Job..never worked in train so really don't Know how these two works..
Thank you very much for all that you do. This really is a great help. I have had a very long work journey and felt like I had not dealt with any of the normal situations but in listening to your RU-vid this jogged my memory on my experience.

Thanks Mr. McMunn this 1 video has truly prepared me for my 3rd interview and final interview. After watching this short video I now posses the confidence needed to knock my interview out of the park. 😁 thank you soo much, and Happy New Year
Sir, I would like to ask, What if the interviewer ask me a question that I have never been through? Should I make a story or just telling the truth that I've never been in the situation before? Thank you
I would personally disclose the fact "I'm sorry but I havent actually been in that situation but" then tell them something that is very similar. That will show them that you're not talking shit and have the courage to own up and tell the truth. More honourable in my opinion.
Hello. I haven't interviewed in a very long time. Thank you for the help. I went on an interview last week and these are the exact questions they asked and I wish I would have know ahead of time about the STAR way to answer the questions more efficiently. Going to Passmyinterview right now! Thank you
Thanks for all your videos, I attended my interview yesterday in STAR format. The interviewer asked questions to test different competencies and the interview was for 60 mins. I did well. I am waiting for my results 😃

Hey Richard, this is amazing. So I need to answer 4 questions, on video. The first two I can apply the STAR framework to quite easily, but the last 2 seems a bit more tricky. Any advice would be appreciated. 1. Over the years thinking back, there are a few key things which stand out for me in terms of my management experience. - 2. Can you describe a time when you had to overcome a difficult sales challenge and how you did it? - 3. How do you ensure alignment of sales goals with overall company objectives - How do you develop and implement sales strategies and goals

This is great advice and should be a big help in my upcoming competency based interview. I do have a question that seems to be a common question. Tell us a time that you had to hold someone accountable either in your work life or your personal life? What was the situation and what were some of the challenges you faced? What was the outcome?
That was amazing. Exactally as I was taught at work. I am a sales trainer and I am preparing others for tough situations. I will sure share this Channell. Thank you for sharing.

Dealing with an irate customer- Always focus on what you can do and not what you can't do. "What I can do for you is offer you a store credit, a gift card of the same value or the option of exchanging the goods for other items of the same value". After many years of working with customers in retail I found that if you give other options then the customer will feel that you have their understanding and willing to remedy the situation by meeting half way. I feel the example in the video focused too much on what the employee couldn't do. I hope this helps anyone reading this comment. Thumbs up :)

He says to click on the link and you can get the questions and answers for "free". Well, you get possibly 2 free questions and answers out of 25. You have to pay for the rest. Now you may say that's okay, and that it would be worth it to get the job you applied for. But after you pay for the questions, they expire after 30 days or 7 uses. The positive is they aren't expensive.
This is wrong, sorry if it wasn't clear - you get to keep the answers in a downloadable guide forever, you just need to save it to your device 😊 The link expires after 7 downloads to prevent piracy. I also mention free in this video as it is an old one where I used to use Slideshare and host the slides there 👍

Sometimes giving a "negative result" can impress people. It shows that you're humble, own up to your mistakes and are able to learn from them and not repeat them.

Sir. My interview is on Friday, May 31st. If I get the position I'll let you know. There are similar videos on this subject but yours are superior. Again, thank you. Gidget
Hi there, I really enjoy all your videos and lectures. Currently, I am looking for a Job and I am all in viewing your nice explanatory videos. Great of luck to you. Thanks!
What about having a list of STAR interview questions that are more related towards sales, it seems like most of your questions are for consulting or project management positions.
