Notes from Thomas about this arrangement:
Motoi Sakuraba might be my favorite game composer of all time, and the scores to the Star Ocean franchise offered more options than I knew what to do with. What made the most sense would be arranging probably the most heard tracks from the most popular game in the series. “Field of Expel,” one of two overworld themes from Star Ocean: The Second Story, is a heavy, plodding, yet still triumphant and adventurous, piece basically tailor-made for a brass ensemble, making it an easy pick for the full force of our nine-piece band.
The original track goes through about four different sections, the latter two maybe less familiar to most players (since you usually don’t spend enough time on the map to hear them), so we don’t spend as much time arranging those sections. Instead, halfway through, the band enters the game’s incredibly fierce, high-energy battle theme, “Stab the Sword of Justice.” The two themes are harmonically similar enough that we’re able to bring them together near the end for one final, epic conclusion, with the entire track closing out with the game’s battle clear fanfare, “Strike Your Mind.”
