Wow - this is one of the nicest and most in-depth tv appearances ever of the great Skeeter Davis! I knew she did a show called Star Route but I just presumed she sang two songs and that was it, as was the norm for guests on most of the old country shows. Instead ,we get a whole show dedicated to her even singing with the then unfamous Glen Campbell!
Friend of my mom and her folks in Kentucky. Born Mary Frances Penick. Her grandpa called her skeeter cause she never sat still...Davis came from her singing partner, Betty Jack Davis who was killed in a car accident. Skeeter was seriously injured and came close to never becoming a singer.
I dunno. She was all over the radio back in the day. Compare her with Lorrie Collins (also on this show), who had a sense of style, good looks, and wonderful voice, but I never heard of, or on the radio back then.
@@whetedge Lorrie and her brother Larry recorded as The Collins Kids with more than a few singles in the mid to late 50s. She was romantically linked to Ricky Nelson, but Ozzie and Harriet put the kibosh on that, fearing it'd hinder Ricky's career. She took off with Johnny Cash's manager in 1959, and left music when she became pregnant with her first child. "Star Route" was somewhat of a comeback attempt. That said, she and Larry are members of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. She did all right.
That hairstyle was actually quite popular in the mid 60's but it did no one any favors including Skeeter and of course dated pretty quickly. Skeeter did have a natural beauty though, and her sweet soul alwayas comes through.
