On Saturday, August 17, 2019 at The Museum of the American Revolution, Philadelphia Jazz Project presented, Sounds of the Revolution - Revisiting Fife & Drum: a special concert of music inspired by an exploration of Fife and Drum. This style of music was definitely a significant part of the musical story of 18th Century America. Fife and drum corps specializing in colonial period impressions using fifes (a small, high-pitched, flute-like instrument quite similar to the piccolo), rope tension snare drums, and (sometimes) bass drums. Many of these ensembles originated from military field music.
This concert delved into the historic military roots of this music, while also observing the African and Afro-Caribbean elements of the music that continued to develop into the 20th century. The music presented was probably somewhat in the vein of what one would hear in maroon and pirate communities throughout the Caribbean in the 18th and 19th centuries, as they were quite diverse and multi-cultural with people from all parts of the world (particularly African peoples) living and working as outlaws and provocateurs. The concert presented patriotic tunes, music by historic, Philadelphia music pioneer, Francis Johnson, an interpretation of Yankee Doodle Dandy, Charles Mingus’ brilliant musical tribute to Haitian independence and other compositions, all with a focus on entertainment, engagement and where possible, dance-ability.
Participating Artists:
