I give this episode 90 self-sealing stem bolts. Eddington is Sisko's Moby Dick. Eddington got one over on Sisko, now Sisko needs to get even. A glimpse of what is to come.

I think Sisko's problem is that Eddington betrayed HIM not Starfleet. And worse, he tricked him successfully and made him look bad in the eyes of his superiors. I think Sisko even says this in the episode "For The Cause". Interestingly in this scene Odo was also more occupied with the fact that Eddington was supposed to have an eye on him because Starfleet didn't trust a changeling than the real danger of possible undetected viruses.

I enjoy the Eddington story, because it allows us to see a different side of Sisko, he is complex and I love it! It shows he's badass and destroys that planet. Is Sisko perfect, no, but we love him. We know what's in him (Keith, ahem, season 7). I, too, really enjoyed the manual departing of the Defiant, it was intense and very satisfying to watch. The Maquis aren't the best plot line, but they did it so Voyager could have a start, and since Voyager can't finish it cuz they are in the Delta Quadrant, DS9 has to. I'm glad were getting a "close" to them. Now, I wouldn't say its among my top favs, but I will give it 80 self-sealing stem bolts because it has some strong points I like. ~Joshua Cronan

I think a HoloPodcast with Keith and Mike would be great. The thing about Eddington is that I never hated him but I also didn't really care. This is why I think I never really got why Sisko cared so much to the point of obsession to pursue him. Sisko went above and beyond orders and not in a good way either. It kind of shifted my view of Starfleet captains overall, as this isn't the only example of a hellbent pursuit we have seen in the franchise. Either way, I give it 70 SSSB.

62 stembolts from me, and it's that high because there are parts I *really* like, like the way they showed them dealing with having to go manual on the Defiant. The level of battle chatter reminded me a little bit of some of the early TOS episodes where you can tell Gene was drawing on his military/flying experience and really going for that type of cadence and style. I wonder if they thought of Nog when they worked on how Uhura would manually route all communications through her in Subspace Rhapsody, too? I have a viscerally negative response to Eddington--it's so strong that I have trouble even watching this episode. Kai Winn, in contrast, almost delights me with how perfectly evil she is--even as I'm hating her and having an angry response to what she's saying, I get this little thrill of "wow, this is one of the most well-written, well-acted characters I've ever met." I don't think the show invested enough in the Eddington character for him to rise to that level. Walter really enjoyed the part of the watch-along he got to be there for, and he overheard me listening to you guys today and appreciated you pointing out that Valjean dies "old and singing falsetto." It's been too long since I interacted with Les Mis for me to comment on this, but Walter pointed out that Valjean not only doesn't sacrifice himself, he sets up other people to sacrifice themselves. It was an odd choice to go for, allusion-wise; they must have thought Moby Dick/Ahab was getting too overdone in Trek. You guys were a bit hard on yourselves at the beginning; I think this episode of K&M was great! I laughed very hard at Mike's "just a couple-a trees!" defense! Oh man. I did not think about the life on that planet that was impacted by Sisko and not evacuated (plants, animals, etc.) I appreciated both Keith's strong nudge to remind us all to be less human and humanoid centric, also the grace and humor from you both that reflects how hard it is to overcome that human-centric wordview. There's a recent-ish episode of the Women at Warp podcast about Native perspectives on the Maquis that dovetails really nicely with a lot of what you guys brought up in your conversation, especially Keith's insight about rage and ego being central to both Eddington and Sisko in this episode (but not on purpose or handled well, unfortunately.) The Maquis was an interesting idea, but they seem to have mostly approached it from the POV of empire, and been unable to muster up any real empathy for the freedom fighters. I'm wondering if Una McCormack has written any books that feature the Maquis; of all the ST writers, I feel like she could really explore that conflict with nuance and depth. Speaking of nuance and depth ... you guys... THE ACOLYTE?!? Holy cats is that a good show.

So in 98 my first time in new York, I saw Les Mis on Broadway, and loved it forever. Mike cant stand having anything cuter than him on screen for more than 10 seconds. Yes Mike makes is a great thing. Ill do that live stream with you painting that head. A full week late I am watching this. Thank you for the Birthday wishes although this may rank amongst the worst. For Keith, Star Trek insurrection should have been how the marquis story ended. Actually because of Prodigy season 2, we learn that the marquis ship is like the work horse tug boat that they attach guns to. This really is an fascinating episode cause Sisko really is wrong, but we still root for him, which is such a reflection of America, cops are bastard pigs until we are being robbed, and we have to live with that unease. The big problem is the writers wrote themselves into a corner with the marquis to where they would have had to make Starfleet the actual baddies. And they knew fans would have rioted. its a 75SSSBs for me.

@@mikeyi99 happy to be here. Still working through the series, and I'm so excited for what's coming. Nothing better than enjoying this series through someone else's eyes. I'll be moving in with my girlfriend sometime in the near future and she's decided we will do a DS9 watch through as soon as we get a place. (Motivation!) And I'm excited to see her reactions too.

1:30:41 I give this one 50 self-sealing stem-boltss. I think what's going on here is a bunch of writers showing how appreciative they were to create this group, They didn't want to create, for a show that they're not going to work on, only to have that show treat this group with no consideration whatsoever. Then the producers, of both shows, come to you and say, "it's your job to get rid of this group." So it was done, and not very enthusiastically from a story-craft aspect.

I will have to reread this episode because Sisko only did EXACTLY what Eddington did but prevent humans from living on the Maqui planets. Not eradicate all life I never remembered it as that lopsided in ethics. Sisko made it SO NO ONE wins no planet is livable on by either Cardassian or human/Maqui

Congrats on your prodigy puppy. Did you have her on the 4th of July? I've never seen a dog not freak out about the noises. I don't know how you ended up talking about "human sausage". Ethical issues of cannibalism aside, I imagine human sausage is full of micro-plastics, mercury and who knows what other toxins. As for Shakaar as a love interest. I don't know if it is the actor playing Shakaar or the writing for his character, but I always thought he was kind of bland. If nothing else, he is quite tall, and that's a huge factor in a man's attractiveness towards women. The internet was in its infancy during the 1990s but people were speculating online about DS9 as the episodes were coming out. Until it was revealed he was in the Maquis, it was widely speculated that Eddington was a changeling infiltrator. As a continuity issue, it bothers me that they seldom use the new holo-emitter in future episodes. I really liked Mike's smartass comments around the one hour mark of this episode, "Goose System", "Miscellaneous", etc. In all seriousness, I do like that the Breen nursery rhyme scene shows Odo can get in the heads of his suspects like the great investigator he is. Given that Dax is a Trill not a human, the fact that she is aware of Victor Hugo at all is impressive. Even if I had eight life times, I doubt I'd read a very lengthy Trill novel from 600 years ago. Sisko didn't obliterate the ecosystem of an entire planet, he just made the planet uninhabitable for humans. He Uno-Reversed Eddington. The displaced Cardassians and the displaced humans switched places. They were very specific with the Technobabble, it was chemicals that were very species specific. This is a great episode for character arcs. Less great for the metaplot. The Maquis are a lot less scary and interesting than the Dominion, Pah Wraiths, Borg, Cardassians, and pretty much every other ongoing antagonist. 85 out of 100 self-sealing stem bolts. TNG: Worf: I recommend we fire torpedos, Captain Picard: No, lets try a diplomatic solution. DS9 Worf: I recommend we fire torpedoes, Captain Sisko: No, wait till we attach WMDs to them and THEN fire the torpedoes. If you want to avoid a war, you send Picard. If you want to win a war, you send Sisko. 1:26:18 What the French Toast are you smoking? Not everything has to be gendered. Anyway, Mike's in for a treat, Purgatory's Shadow is one of my favorite episodes. Lots of great guest stars.

Haha Indeed not everything has to be gendered... but some things are. When we have a 10,000 year list of countries, cultures and continents destroyed by female rage and ego we'll talk about not gendering it :)
