Best film so far; a great battle, lots of space scenes with the brand new ship, and it stands on its own as a movie: it can be shown independently to someone who doesn't know anything about Star Trek or hasn't seen the previous films, and they'll get the hang of it. The only minus comes from Cockbrain's rock music; luckily those scenes are short, and Jerry Goldsmith's film music is awesome as always. The film's special effects are also a tribute to the short golden era when CGI was only used to complement model kit scenes, not to replace them entirely.
Definitely worked that way for me! First Contact was the first Trek film I saw after Star Trek 2009. I started out with the action packed films before absorbing and appreciating the rest of the franchise.
The cgi for the Enterprise E in this movie is amazing. It was used for the temporal vortex scene, the jump to warp, and the first shot in the battle with the Borg. And yet you'd never think that just by looking at these shots. No one makes cgi like this very often anymore.
It's why reference material is important. Because they've got shots of the models, they use that as reference for what the CGI ships are supposed to look like and match it. When it's all CGI, they go for what they *think* looks real instead of what actually looks real and it doesn't always work...
+Aloha732 First Contact was the last ST-Movie where they still largely used models. And the Enterprise-E would never again look this good. Soon after, they made the almost total switch to CGI, during the third Season of Voyager, the sixth Season of DS9 and Insurrection.

I thought this movie was good except for some of the themes like using the v'ger theme when the borg try to contact the borg from the 21 century. Using that theme may have something to do with a connection between the borg and v'ger.
well, there was something I heard where Roddenberry had intended vger, & Decker & Ilea merging, to be the beginning of the borg. But, on-screen, they were never able to connect the borg to what happened in star trek 1
Definitely not the best star trek film of all time. Derivative Time Travel Plot. Nerfed the Borg Collective and permanently diminished them as compelling villains. The Captain Picard in this movie is a different character from the one in the series. Nerfed Zefram Cochrane, fixed his warp engine for him, flew his ship and turned him into a hack. Inserted the lore that the Vulcans came down from the sky and fixed our problems for us, before this movie we had fixed our own damn problems and were partners with the Vulcans not wards. Star Trek 2 and Star Trek 6 were objectively better films, Star Trek IV was debatably a better main stream film.
Vulcans didn't do jack shit lol. They offered limited assistance in repairing the planet. But for the most part kept out of Earth's business unless it pertained to Interstellar affairs or research into faster means of Warp Propulsion (Which they tried to hinder). Mankind eliminated disease, hunger, and poverty by 2113. However some parts of the world still suffered from the Post Atomic Horror as late as 2079 indicating that it was anything but a quick fix. Earth wouldn't be United until 2130. We did that all on our own. It just really helped knowing that we were not the only intelligent life in the universe.
Saquist, I know what you're talking about. I found the film mildly entertaining... but compared to "The Best of Both Worlds," it pales. YES, having a vampish Borg Queen seemed cheap. Buck Rogers like. If they wanted a Borg Queen, why couldn't they design something more nightmarish? More chilling? When the "scorned" woman Borg shows anger at Picard... I groaned. YES, having a collective consciousness... having a genderless and identity lacking Borg... having an emotionless Borg... that is CREEPY! They erased all the creep factor from this series saving villain. One Borg drone was stabbed by a Batleth (sp?).... groan. YES, They should have a huge space battle at the END! Seems simple, right? But nooo... they throw an unsatisfying battle at the beginning, where Picard knows of a weak spot on the cube. In The Best of Both Worlds, the cube had no weak spots, because all systems were redundant and self repairing. YES, the hillbilly tent town was unsatisfying as well. They could of had this site an air force base, or anything else! The Alfie Woodard character didn't have any charisma. She seemed bitchy and pushy, and that's about it. While the film had great acting from Patrick Stewart, and some good production value, I remember being ultimately let down. And wondering why everyone else liked the film so much?

You kidding right? First contact is one of the best movies of the whole saga, right with wrath of khan and undiscovered country. If you really thing this movie is crap, you have to check yourself to a doctor. Last 2 trek movies are crappy. (and still i liked them. more or less) but this one? hell no. This is one of the best.

It is a good movie, regardless that you didn't like it. - A battle necessari for the history, but could not be long either, would make the movie too long; how many long and meaningfull battles you've seen in star trek or star wars or any other series films? they are there for fun. -Borg queen was a necessity and clever solution. What, Alien didn't have a queen? yes. As much as i'm a trekkie, they needed to appeal larger audience, so they had to put a face to the borg; talking to a voice like in the series wasn't an option. Deal with it. -What? James Cromwell Cochrane added something meaningfull to a character that was superficial to me in TOS, and was a good irony; a federation created behind a man that just wanted money to spend his last days as much well as he could. A forced hero. -Borg sphere (and its a little one) had systems down like the ENT-E for the time travel, and they weren't a match against her. -How can you beam out the enemy if you don't have power? and how many times we've seen in Voyager that even having power they can't beam out drones cos they are adapted to frequencies and block transporter beam? -Borg have always been like zombies. Deal with it. -Computer control override from Data? you watched the movie or you just had your mind in bitching? Borg had the power but they didn't have control either. -Picard didn't want to talk about the borg and always seemed like he was ok. But how much patience you can have? wouldn't you became upset and had enough of so much bullshit of assimilation of planets and retreat? he anyways backs down when he realises. Humanity man, thats what make characters likeable. And as i said. you are baised. i hope one day you realize that. Sit infront of your tv (or computer, or whatever you have) and watch the film open minded. As you can see all your points didn't have a real problem behind. it's a good movie. and doesn't have plot holes! not at least as much as star trek 2009 and into darkness. THOSE you can put the whole enterprise in the middle of every stupid plot hole! those are crappy made (and you have to don't think about them to enjoy it) But first contact? no no no.. .. first contact is a good movie. Pep Vendrell -I call BS. Positioning the Fleet Battle at the begining of the Film guaranteed a suspense-less meaningless battle. It should have been long...because that's how you create suspense...and by placing the battle at the deciding point in the film. -The Borg Queen was completely superfluous. She did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. She was an Avatar for the Borg a Villain and a cheesy Villain at that. Her placement single-handledly wrecked one of Trek's greatest social concepts by putting a vindictive whorish personality to represent what should have the been the collective consciousness of a driven people. An Artistic Fail from top to bottom. Total buy-out in the face of originality from which the Borg concept came from. -The depiction of Zephram Cochrane completely cheapened the enormity of the FTL goal. And before you loft writing pros on the development team this had nothing to do with "irony" it had to do with comedy. (Yes I know it's used for that purpose mostly). They didn't think to themselves. "Lets create a tragic irony" that's completely opposite from the history books. They thought "This movie needs cheap laughs" Drunks, Peeing in the Bushes, Hero-crush and Rock-roll. You know it's true because the part was completely devoid of the character's brilliance. Here is the the equivalence of Albert Einstein but with none of the witt or Genius that defines him. -Little doesn't matter it's the Size of Voyager with far more advancements and four torpedoes took it out. You know what that's called right? A weak plot device to transport the enemy to the main conflict. So stupidly conceived that they use the time travel after they get to Earth instead of before. -The Borg were a Collective before this trash movie. "Neither male or female" "No Centralied command structure" but the Queen surely was all of those things with a useless throne room because that's how those idiots think. -WAS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE SHUTTLECRAFT AND THEIR TRANSPORTERS THE BORG HAD CONTROL OF...ugh get the stupid out before you post. -Picard had already gone through his problems with the Borg with his brother...he had a counselor on board for years after the conflict...You think she would have left the ship if she SENSED he was this unstable? OH wait she had more important duties like replacing Zephrams band of hoe-boes at launch control...Yes, brilliant writing...I see why you like it. Every movie has plot holes or errors of somekind this one has freaking house sized holes. Get a clue.

Not the story. Make the battle longer just makes the movie longer. -You don't understand that when you do a movie, you have to appeal to more people than fans. They tried to go with scenes of Picard talking to the warp core, with the voice of the borg. Looked patetic. That, and the need of people to put a face to a villain, was necessary. Like it or not, it was. -Right. You knew Albert Einsten, was your best buddy ? i didnt know him. You have your rules of how a Genius has to be, ok. That doesn't mean a thing. Voyager with future tech you talk? why you compare that with the tech of this movie? / the plot was that the sphere and time travel was the EMERGENCY plan B of the borg, not their main plan. Their cube was blown, they scaped, and decided to time travel THEN. not before. -Ants? aliens? every collective has a QUEEN. so they thought of that. Borg collective. we put a Queen. thats too complicated for your mind, genius? Queen wasn't a centralized command either. how many times she has been killed and the collective goes on? she is just a fisical representation of the collective. -There weren't any problem with the shuttlecraft, tho you can't access and use them if you can't open THE SHUTTLEBAY DOORS COS THERES NO POWER! I do agree on the plothole of using a transporter from a shuttle. that i thought it watching the movie in the cinema back then in 1996. (Blowing up the doors with phasers, they could have done that too) i never said that there weren't plotholes in this movie, cos i said there are. but there aren't as big as the 2 fucked up last trek movies.
