There's a difference in being emotionally traumatized and forced to talk about it in front of the entire galaxy or discussing something with an all knowing entity. The Orville started as pure shit. Then matured into generic, barely tolerable, "why are you watching this over TNG?" mediocre slop. At best, they are just re-hashing decent Star Trek episodes. At worst, you get family guy humor on top of TERRIBLE Star Trek. And then the various enemies are just conservative straw men for the liberal crew to "tut tut" over. The Krilla are genocidal religious fanatics and the Moclans are bigoted anti-environmental super-industrialists. The only fault of the "Union?" They are "too tolerant" to deal with the intolerance of other culters. "We tolerant everyone that is exactly like us already!" Again, these aren't thought provoking episodes so much as the cast punching various straw men that only exist for the crew to look down their noses at. Like that episode that samples teeth to determine zodiac signs, then discrimate based on them. Not once did anyone say "Hey we are from a completely different planet with different signs: we can't even see the same stars!" Why? Because it was a heavy handed allegory about how backwards religion is. As an atheist myself, this caricature of a religious civilization is just insulting. *sigh* It's just so fucking terrible.

I love DS9. It had so great acting and interactions between differen characters. And because it was mostly stationary they could build this six season plot line of dominion wars or the ever present desire of cardassians to be important, powerful, even fear inducing and it all lead to their total destruction. I like it the most. Voyager is somewhat unrealistic to me. It's nice to be all starfleet but if everyone is after you you cannot be so naivly clean and pure. You would most certainly at least used others technologies and ideas to make your ship stronger, more dangerous, scary and faster. No need to attack anyone, just use taiwanees army strategy of heavily armed porcupine.

While I enjoyed it a bit, I think what really troubles me is how Starfleet was portrayed, especially in regards to the. In the TNG episode where Picard and several others find out the origins of Humanoid life in the galaxy, the episode ends with a Romulan choosing to call Picard. He admits that, as it seems, Romulans and humans really ARE alike: similar hopes, dreams, fears. Picard smiles as he realizes that this single Romulan has come to a mutual understanding. The Romulan then finished it off by saying "one day", to which Picard responds in kind, smile on his face. The Romulans were also a key factor in winning the Dominion War, with the DS9 episode "In the Pale Moonlight" highlighting just how powerful but also how incredibly necessary their involvement in the fight against the Dominion was. As a result, the Romulans lost millions of soldiers, pretty much all of the Tal'Shiar and eventually their version of a high council in Nemesis and I'm supposed to believe that after the destruction of Romulus, Starfleet was hesitant to aid the Romulans? Also the ban on synthetics doesn't really sound like post-Nemesis Starfleet. Data is EXTREMELY famous (enough that B'ellana Torres heard of him and his exploits throughout the Federation) as is his case where Picard helped him win his freedom and establish his rights. We're supposed to just believe that even after a terrorist attack, there would be a fucking BAN on synthetics? Data literally fucking DIED in Nemesis as a sacrifice. Starfleet is just retroactively overturning the ruling on the rights of artificial life forms because of a fucking TERRORIST ATTACK in a post-Nemesis universe? IMO the series has my interest but I'm really not liking how they're expecting more of the hardcore fans to just kinda accept where the universe has gone since the last time we've seen it.

Star Fleet isn't the Government. Its the military, and it takes orders from the Government of Earth, and the Federation, even if they are bad orders. What Picard disliked was that Star Fleet did not object to the orders to abandon the Romulan survivors. Indeed, unlike Nelson, they didn't put their telescope to their bad eye, and bring them to Earth anyway. They were abandoned, and received no further assistance from Earth. Sounds familiar if you were an Afghani interpreter for the Coalition in Afghanistan. That's the problem with Trekkies: they don't want the problems of the real world to impinge on their vision of a universe where Star Fleet can fall short of their ideals as humans do a lot.
@Shoddragon
@Shoddragon 4 года назад
@@BigHenFor thanks but I am aware of what happened. I watched the episode. Also Starfleet isn't simply the military. It encompasses peace making, defense, exploration, research, general diplomacy and more branches of the Federation as a whole. It has far more direct influence with the overall Federation government than most real world militaries. If you re-read what I wrote, I did not object to Starfleet or Trek in daring to show a future where there exist some problems with government. My criticisms lie with how the Picard series chose to portray Starfleet AFTER the events of TNG and Deep Space 9. As I mentioned, there are several big examples from TNG, DS9 and even Voyager that make Starfleet's actions as portrayed in "Picard" really questionable. It doesn't mean they are impossible to ever reconcile but as is, the writing is very sloppy, mostly because it tries to portray Starfleet as immediately losing all the ideals that were built up over 3 different Trek shows by having it refusing to really help Romulans after they helped the Federation in the war, having a ban on synthetics after legal preceding established them as having equal rights, etc.
@ge2719
@ge2719 4 года назад
@@BigHenFor why the fuck does the real world have to determine the vision of a utopian science fiction future set 400years in the future where humanity has reached such a point of abundance that providing aid to millions of living beings is of no consequence. This sort of message doesnt fit star trek in the way they did it. It would however make sense for starfleet to come across a less advanced race that are in the situation we are in, and starfleet helps them through it. But these writers are terrible and lazy and want to make a spy drama action show in with the star trek brand on it.

Star Trek Picard gave me too many Star Trek Discovery vibes. Despite having some of the TNG actors on board, the writing and production is clearly being done by people who don't understand the spirit of Star Trek. Gene Roddenberry intended Star Trek to be an optimistic look at an enlightened humanity, and I don't get that at all from modern Trek.
@ge2719
@ge2719 4 года назад
Its literally the same writers directors and producers that made discovery.
@BigHenFor
@BigHenFor 4 года назад
Gene Roddenberry is dead, like Shakespeare. And like Shakespeare it can still honour those themes in the present by giving us a chance to make that optimism valid, instead of a bolthole to hide in. Darkness and light cannot be separated from one another as one cannot exist without the other. If confronting themes such as fear, prejudice, and cruelty cannot be done in Star Trek, then one might as well watch reruns of Mr Rogers. But that wouldn't be Star Trek, would it? Even though the enemies were always alien cultures, their qualities were human ones. They were our shadow selves made manifest and as such they were characteristics we had to conquer through the intervention of Star Fleet's best and finest. That perspective can only take you so far, because humanity can't be reengineered from the outside in. Fear, ignorance, and hatred don't just disappear. They are part of us, and must be confronted. Perhaps that is too close to home for you but, if the problems of earth cannot be solved on earth, then what exactly is the point of Star Fleet? That's why a 70 year Picard pulling on his Star Fleet uniform would not be tenable. Star Fleet would not have been preserved in aspic. It would have changed, especially as it was the military wing of the Federation, and if the people of Earth, driven by fear of violence, abandoned its former allies from the Dominion Wars in space to fend for themselves instead of bringing them to Earth, and Star Fleet carried out those orders, would that sit easy with a man like Picard? No it wouldn't. Perhaps Roddenberry did us a disservice in not showing us our darkness more openly. That's why when he was alive, themes like that were rarely openly part of the show. That's why DS9 is such a strong show. Dealing with darker and uncomfortable emotions was it's hallmark, and it was more successful because of that. Perhaps that is the problem here. Picard shows that Earth isn't a paradise, and humans still are subject to fear and prejudice, and that's too close to home, especially now.

Other Joe, as a Star Trek fan who's watched most of the episodes, I'd recommend starting with The Next Generation, then, if you want more TNG with a new cast and new plotline, go for Voyager, regardless, end with Deep Space Nine (it's a lot to take in). Only watch The Original Series if you want to see where it all started and get some pretty campy (and great) action. I haven't seen Enterprise, but I hear it's better than its reputation makes it out to be, so it may be worth a watch. I wouldn't be surprised if these synthetics that were talked about in the episode were made from Lore. With Data having been vaporized in Nemesis, Lore is the only advanced Soong-type android left that someone who wants to make more androids would presumably have easy access to. And as we learned in the TNG episode 'Brothers', Lore is unstable. Dr. Soong confirmed in that episode that Lore needed to be fixed (but he didn't have enough time left to do it). So it stands to reason that any android made from Lore would end up being as unstable as Lore.

I've seen every single series since the early 1970s to present excluding STD. Star Trek Picard opens up a new era, tying together stories and plots from all television series and movies. At the end of the first episode, the music played paid homage to the Romulans first appearance.

The thing about Starfleet not helping is essentially how many wanted to react to the Klingon disaster in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country so I'm more willing to accept it.

Something happened within Starfleet and that pissed Picard off. He ranted in the interview over it and rightly so, the romulans were allies and they had backs turned when they needed help the most. Picard was like "fuck this, I'm out" since even as he said it was no longer the Starfleet which he loved.

One of the biggest problems I have is that the writers undid virtually ALL of the work Data did in striving to be more human, and in turn to help other artificial life forms accomplish that same goal, however lofty. In a single minute, they threw episodes like Measure of a Man, The Offspring and The Quality of Life out the cargo bay. By nothing more than a “yeah they went rogue, destroyed mars and the Federations main shipyards and everyone hates them now.” Did they get the same knockheads who wrote the new Star Wars movies to write this show as well?

Star Trek 2 -> Spock dies -> Star Trek 3: Search for Spock -> Kirk & Co as band of renegades trying to resurrect Spock Star Trek Nemesis -> Data dies -> Star Trek Picard: The Search for Data -> Picard & Co as band of renegades trying to resurrect Data Oh, Data already seemed resurrected at the end of Nemesis? No problem, we'll un-resurrect him, so that we can go on a quest to resurrect him. It's all about the journey. :p

He doesn't, Dr Crusher is Picard's best friend and Geordi is Data's. But since they're the two best known characters from TNG, they're best friends now.

Gotta be honest here, if this isn't a "Star Trek" show, I would rate it as a pretty great pilot. a great pilot for a "sci fi show." & there is no denying the cinematography in this episode is just beautiful, amazing looking CGI too. This episode kinda piqued my interest a lot more that I would've expected. Now it all comes down to the rest episodes for the season.

I think that's a pretty good way to look at this. I really enjoyed it, people seem to be really assblasted that the Federation ain't entirely perfect which just makes it a lil more believeable to me.
