I felt so sorry for him. A test of his "Loyalty" proved that some Romulans wanted peace. But he was tricked into revealing his sympathy.

When the scout ship self destruct while Picard was in mid-speech surprised the bloody hell out of me back then. Brilliant episode!

I would have liked to hear a cinematic adaptation of this Romulan theme. We've had several amazing Klingon themes, both on film and on television, but a grand orchestral rendition of the Romulan Empire has so far eluded us.

One of my all-time favourite TNG episodes. Just about every line is a masterpiece in dialogue.

I like how he locked phasers THEN opened a channel. Not f***in' around. XD

Loved it when Picard had an ace up his sleeve when he entered the neutral zone.

Somehow I believe the defector was a hero. It was a ruse to him AND the Federation. Remember, he will never see "his daughter's face ever again".

I'll never forget 'directly aboard'. I think the dialogue writers had an arguement about what to have Picard say there.

Best sttng episode IMO. Nothing but tension from beginning to end. Great ending too. Would have liked to see a resolution in "Nemesis" for Jarok though.

These were the heydays of Star Trek.

It's amazing how much time they had to talk back then.

Life support is off-line, but hey, wait with the transport until Riker and Worf leave the bridge and arrive to the transporter room

There's more tension in this scene than in all the TNG movies combined

What is most powerful about this scene to me is just the slow buildup of the two vessels, Romulan Warbird and Enterprise E, its like the Warbird knows it can't continue to target the scout unless the Enterprise lowers its guard, but likewise it doesn't want to shoot at the enterprise, so they just slow down and now its like two legendary boxers walking up to one another about to brawl and they just 'stare' eye to eye, waiting for the other to throw the first punch.

How do they know where the warbird is going if it's cloaked?

I love how geordie volunteers sensitive information.

No one crosses into the Federation without getting the horns.

The Enterprise is ALWAYS the only star fleet ship near the neutral zone; reinforcements are always at least 2 days away at maximum warp 🙄

How is it that AFTER the Warbird cloaks that Worf can tell that it's heading back to the neutral zone?

This is a favorite episode of mine

so many ask,this needs explanation ==the cloak hasnt really changed over the decades since kirk...and remember they found a cloaked bird of prey. the cloak is almost useless as a weapon on a warship. well in modern/sttng times. the vessel was decloaked and 10 feet away from the enterprise,full scan of its engine and power distribution systems gives a fingerprint or energy signature that can be tracked short distances . this is the reason the romulans never attacked the fedration (after the original war) and why the romulans and klingons never went to war and why the klingons didnt launch all out war against the federation . also remember there was an episode where troi was on a warbird and the commander said the tal shiar (sp) suspected the federation could track thier cloaked ships with their boarder telescope arrays. and that the enterprise might be able to track them. then there was a ds9 ep where the dominion was able to track the defiant . main thing -once u de-cloak the cloak is useless,now u have to fight . a cloak is really a tool of espionage ,not for war machines

1:39 - How could Worf possibly know that the Romulan Warbird had reentered the neutral zone and was headed toward Romulan territory? As the warbird engaged its cloak, the last thing that was visually observed was them heading toward the neutral zone. For all we know, the Romulan ship could have easily come about and followed the Enterprise into Federation space completely undetected. I thought ships (e.g. Klingon, Romulan, ect.) could not be tracked while cloaked? Either the Enterprises' sensors could now detect a cloaked ship, the data on his tactical display gave Worf false readings or somebody forgot to do some research before giving Michael Dorn this script.

How was Worf able to track the Warbird heading back to Romulan territory after the Warbird clearly activated its cloaking device when withdrawing?

1:33 - Insignificant plot hole #214 - Warbird cloaks, and shortly thereafter Worf says it's departed Federation territory as if he's tracking it.

I wonder if that Warbird was Tomalak's ?

How did warf track the war bird back to romulan space when it was cloaked?

James Sloyan's performance in this episode is wonderful. He also did a great job in Season 7 playing k'mtar/Adult Alexander. Two episodes I love involve this actor I love the intensity. "IRRELEVANT! IRRELEVANT!" lol awesome. And even 4 years later with the episode Firstborn. His intensity is still there. Also, I find it funny for him to play a Romulan and then a Klingon who were blood enemies for years. EDIT: Oh and I forgot I did kind of find it creepy in the episode "Firstborn" when K'mtar and Warf hug it out and he says, "I love you Father" at the end of the episode lol i dont know why. Just weirded me out lol.

I wonder what the crew was thinking when Picard ordered Red Alert while patrolling the Neutral Zone

Admiral Tomalak crossed the Neutral Zone claiming to have extraordinary classified data about a secret Romulan base from which a massive new offensive would be launched.

Read the title too fast. Though I would be learning some information about the Enterprises DEFLECTOR.

Anyone notice how easily they tracked a cloaked warbird?

I wonder how Lt Worf was able to tell they had re-entered Romulan space with the sensors after the ship had clocked.

*Worf* : Warbird has *re-entered* The Neutral Zone; Headed towards *Romulan Territory* - *How can you possibly tell THAT?* You saw them STOP; turn around; reverse course, and CLOAK - They DE-Cloaked flying INTO The Neutral Zone so that you could SEE that they were THERE. What’s to stop them from warping half a light-year back into neutral space under cloak, then reversing course again to fly straight past you while you were distracted with the scout ship - ? They could be half way to Vulcan by now, for all you know ..!!

Spoiler Alert - Great episode, turns out the Romulan defector was actually allowed to defect and tricked by his government into giving the federation fake information in order to get a federation ship to cross the neutral zone so they could capture or destroy it. The tricked romulan defector ends up angry and killing himself but he still chose to destroy the romulan ship he stole to safe guard romulan technology even tho his government used him.

This is where the Federation always blows it. They should have destroyed the Romulan ship when it entered Federation space.

Tye Romulan ship cloaked, so how would they know it re entered Romulan space? That would mean their cloak was useless.

Great scene, but to be fair, Picard asking the Warbird commander's intent is, on the face of it, a bit obvious (at least, at the time). Also, that's a funny five kilometres. I do feel that the effects guys got an earlier draft of the script.

Kind of convenient that Worf could see the Warbird leaving while it was "cloaked" yet every time they engage or try to track a cloaked ship they cannot tell where it is because the sensors cannot detect a cloaked ship LMAO

Odd blocking in this scene. Riker/Frakes has no reason to state "All Stop!" then turn around walk to his chair, and turn around with nothing to do. Star Trek is a textbook case of having more than capable actors and not having equally capable directors with enough setup time to get nothing but coverage shots.

THIS IS STAR TREK !!! Not that "gender friendly" horseshit they call discovery and picard.

Patrick Stuart is believable here. I would like to have Riker be the captain and not have Stuart in the show at all.
