This was the very first episode and was my introduction into Star Trek. my dad ever showed me and i gotta tell you, I loved it so much. I always love when Star Trek deals with different eras and has to interact with them.
I firmly believe that half of TOS boiled down to, "Hey, my cousin says we can get a gladiator set cheap from this project that just wrapped up, tell the writers I need Roman Empire planet ideas by Tuesday"
I love how Spock finally falls into the "gangster" role -- belatedly, but with a certain relish. "I would advise yas to keep dialin', Oxymyx." If only Sarek and Amanda could see him now!
@@n10cities Indeed. I'd love to see a ship do it again, because it seems like a very practical way to resolve situations where diplomacy has failed and there are lots of hostiles at each other's throats. Knock them out and sort stuff out later. Then again, I'm also assuming because of the area of effect, the way different species react to stun blasts, atmospheric interference and the small and crucial space between stun and kill may make it unnecessarily risky to use.
They aren’t on Earth...they’re on a planet populated by very imitative people (ioshens, I believe it was). They’ve tailored their society to be a copy of a book, “Chicago Mobs of the Twenties” (or something like that) left behind by some earlier visitors.
Kirk: "At least let me call my ship one last time to say goodbye!" Krakow: "Alright, go ahead, but don't get smart!" Kirk: "Put the ship's phasers on stun, fire a burst in a one block radius..."
Surely some of that planet‘s inhabitants went indoors when that shooting in the streets happened before the Enterprise fired her phasers on a 1 block radius.
Some maybe.Just wonder what that stun blast would do to elderly people or babies in the area. I'd like to think MOST of the inhabitants were indoors lol
This original phaser seen is better than the enhanced remastered version. Reason being that Kirk ordered a blanket stun around his location. But in the remastered scene the phasers directly hit the two gangster cars. It doesn't fit.
Agreed, as there was nothing at all wrong with the original aired 60's versions of the Original Star Trek Series. This enhanced stuff is ok, however wasen't really needed.
Always thought this would be a great episode to revisit as a Trek movie. The planet's inhabitants have become hostile to their neighbors and have developed advanced tech due to McCoy's communicator left behind. They assume the Feds are out there and waiting to be paid, only to realize they were duped by Kirk.
There was a far side cartoon with spock etc trying to impress people from 2000s with their technology, and these kids were saying "...what? It doesn't even take photos? Hey come and look at this guy's antique"
Yes, everyone realises that StarTrek had a few devices that are similar to things we have now in real life, they also had a whole lot more devices that we don't have in real life so it doesn't mean much other than the basic design was fit for purpose.
Note if you will, the actor being transported to Oxsmiths office, was John Harmon who was also in the first season episode, City On The Edge Of Forever who was sitting next to Kirk and saying You expect to eat for free? You gotta listen to goodie two shoes. He also was the one who picked up the milk and began drinking it when McCoy appered and said, Assins, murderers!, You, what planet is this? Also, he was on Bonanza on many occasions one in particular, as a barber in The Last Haircut which had actor Perry Lopez whom you know as Lt. Rodriguez in the first season episode of Star Trek, Shore Leave.
Um, when Krako grabs Mc Coy's gun, Spock is easily close enough to grab it back with superior strength and speed. But he doesn't. then Krako says he is taking over. OK. But then he takes Spock's gun, and HANDS IT TO OXMYK'S man! You said you were overthrowing the Boss.. and expect his man to help?
Imagine if police today had phasers and they could be set to stun, or could only stun and not kill? Just knock someone out harmlessly like on Star Trek.
