Star Trek The Motion Picture: Revisiting the Crew's First Movie 

ST:TMP made the Enterprise an actual member of the cast. Kirk's reaction during the fly around really showed his love of HIS ship.

This is still my favorite Star Trek film - what some see as slow I see as majestic and beautiful.

I have ALWAYS loved this movie, ever since I first saw it in the theatre in 1979 when I was 13 years old. It is one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made, and the only TRULY CLASSIC and EPIC Star Trek film that has ever been made. ST:TMP did for sci-fi films in 1979 what 2001: A Space Odyssey did for sci-fi films in 1968... It presented science fiction as intelligent, thought-provoking, breath-taking, cerebral, character-driven storytelling at its very best (The very "heart" of what the TV series was as well)... ST: TMP was an extraordinary cinematic endeavor... and it was a movie-going EXPERIENCE. From the visionary brilliance of the great Gene Roddenberry, to the always reliable performances of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, to the impeccable direction of Robert Wise, to the jaw-dropping special effects of Douglas Trumbull and John Dykstra, to the majestic score of Jerry Goldsmith... It succeeds on every level... Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a CLASSIC and a MASTERPIECE. I'm in the minority here, but this is my favorite of the original Star Trek films. The 4k disc looks and sounds incredible, highly recommended for fans of the film

With age comes wisdom. I didn't understand this movie when it came out and I was in 6th grade. In my 50's and this is one of the best sci-fi films of all time. My favorite of TOS films.

The Motion Picture is underrated as sci-fi, it's much more like the tv series than the later movies. The second, third and fourth are great cinema but less sci-fi. Say what you like about the Motion Picture, it looks and sounds incredible! The long scene of the shuttle pod approaching the Enterprise is the best example of the model maker's craft and close-up cinematography ever put to film. Star Wars zooms around to hide the seams, this scene lingers to show how flawless the model and the camera work really is. The theme then crowns the whole scene. Only modern CGI can equal it. I got the chance to see it again in cinema last year and was amazed again.

The thing I always loved about this movie was (as so many have said) the scale. It captures a sense of insurmountable vastness. Unlike the modern iterations of Star Trek the ultimate solution to the problem wasn't combat or a tactical advantage. It was the crew's drive for understanding in the face of a total unknown. An indomitable sense of curiosity is what has always drawn me to Star Trek.

I love this movie and have watched it at the cinema ..and on DVD and Blu-Ray ..and now on glorious 4K.....and I wish it was even longer..

I really LOVE this movie now. It is still underrated IMO. After all, there would be no Wrath of Khan if not for this visual masterpiece.

This was a longer version of "The Changeling" episode from the series, also my favorite star trek movie The enterprise has never looked better than in this movie. It's a model with every panel and detail painted by hand to catch the light in special ways, at the time using models and blue screens was really complicated because they didn't have any CGI but everything looks great especially on 4k

Easily the best movie in the franchise.

What I love about "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" is it gave us one the best sequel films which is The Wrath of Khan.

I'm by no means a ST superfan, and the movie does slog on in places. Definitely not the action-space pew pew that Star Wars and even Galactica plus Buck Rogers were, but there is something singular about the film. It ushered in the film series, and I'm grateful for that. I know "Changeling" is mentioned below as the inspiration, sort of, for this film, but it is a great concept to explore, and still very timely today with AI being used more and more. As a kid, I rented the movie, and was struck by the Enterprise flyby. One of my favorite points of this "ugh, hours long sequence" is that it was the FIRST time the an Enterprise was shown in all its glory. And, on the big screen. As others have stated, fans got to see the ship up close and with some nice reverence for the first time. Again, I'm not a ST superfan, but that flyby is fucking amazing and this film is a lot better than the reviews make it out to be.

TMP is a beautiful, thought-provoking movie.

It's not the best but it is my favorite. It feels unique to me whereas a lot of the others in the series, while good, follow a fairly standard film plot.

DS9 started with an action scene and had a firefight finale. Not a huge action piece compared to today's standards but for the time in Trek which was mostly devoid of any action, DS9's pilot was action packed!

I love this movie. I love the Enterprise (and especially the flyby), I love Kirk's devotion to the ship, I love Spock's quest for perfect logic, I love how Decker tries to bring back Ilia, I love the futuristic environment, and I love the music! Probably the most realistic of all the Star Trek movies in terms of how it looks and moves.

I love this movie deeply. I also understand all the criticism and acknowledge they are valid. But I continue loving this 40 years after my first viewing. I think it is probably because they managed to make something that felt like a real place you could go to.

The 4K Director's Cut improves it a lot, and it's now one of my favorites of the series. Small scene changes help with the pacing, along with added scenes filling in some important plot points (like when Spock is found crying at his station later in the movie). The SFX look beyond gorgeous in a brilliant mixture of the old practical effects and new CGI. The Atmos mix of the soundtrack is simply epic. All of these things enhance the main reason people have enjoyed the movie over the years, and it's that TMP is meant to be an experience. You sit down, you relax your mind, and you take in all of that audio/visual beauty while enjoying a story that's as pure sci-fi as it gets. Star Trek, then and now, has never felt more epic, sprawling, and awe inspiring than it did in this movie.

I actually liked this movie. I think the strength of Star Trek is it leans more on the cerebral than the action. The moral quandaries it posed and the mirror to humanity it can be at times. I don't mind some action in service of the story. I remember watching this think what a cool concept and how much more powerful than the death start the V-ger probe was. But I could also see it being too dull for the average movie goer.

Star Trek orginal crew were the best. Imagine their adventures & stories with todays visual effects.

ST:TMP was a very underrated movie. Watching it in 4K now you can really see the vision of Robert Wise & Douglas Trumball. Considering it was released in 1979 & then you look at Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in 2022 & you can see that it's taken a while to produce movie quality to a TV show. When you look at both TMP & SNW they kinda look seamless in quality.

This film has a epic feel none of the later films have.

The older I get the more I absolutely adore this movie. Its ambitious, it has a sense of scale and size none of the other Trek-Films have, and I just straight up "dig its vibes", if you know what I mean. I just like to kick back, relax and get immersed in the visuals, story and excellent music. Also, its visually *beautiful*. I'm in awe at these effects and wonder how some of these shots were accomplished without any CGI. Its a bit like Magic to me. Also, while all the other Trek-Films match the tone and style, the humor and color and sense of cameraderie of the Series better, I find TMP closest to the Franchises core values related to exploring, seeking out new life and boldly going. It features an Adversary that can't be defeated with violent means so the crew needs their brains (and some bluffing) to overcome it. I just say it: I like TMP about as much as _The Wrath of Khan..._ albeit for different reasons. Its hard to even compare the two, as they are completely unlike, even though they belong to the same franchise. It like comparing _2001: A Space Odyssey_ to _Star Wars._ Its nearly impossible.

A terrific flick that had a great story, sci fi excellence, spot on acting and filming.

I seriously miss the quiet, adventurous and cerebral “Star Trek” depicted in this film.

I consider this a daring movie compared to the sequels which played it safe. I still appreciate them all but hosted a seminar at our film school when this came out with whoever would appear because, as George Takei said, the film was released unfinished. Todd Ramsey, the editor, really gave us the lowdown on how they had to stretch what they had because the score was already written and the missing effects added to the slow pace. Years later I went to a presentation with an effects company that was working on the director's cut. I think most of the team did the special effects for "Babylon 5" and they really got me excited. This movie is profound, perverse and almost as majestic as "2001: A Space Odyssey". That's why I love it.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is not slow. It's just not in a hurry. The people that don't like it have been fed seizure inducing quick cut edited pictures for so long that they can't enjoy this.

This movie was one of those films that was more of an experience than the usual pew pew Star Wars film. It's my personal favourite Star Trek film, and I'll gladly die on this hill.

Star Trek : The Motion Picture is a film that I still love , Its not my top ST film (Genesis Trilogy TOP of all time) but its one that I love to turn on on a Sunday Lazy afternoon and zone out .

I still remember renting this from my local library when I was like seven. That first scene with the Enterprise was so cool to seven year old me!

The Motion Picture is the BEST Trek film of all time, it's not for people with a short attention span. This film is pure science fiction and pure Star Trek.

I will always find it confusing, and a bit funny, that people LOVE 2001 and think Star Trek:TMP is a slow boring slog... They're very similarly paced films. I've always unapologetically loved this movie.

Oh wow.... had no idea so many disliked the first film. I actually LOVE the first film. There's literally nothing else like it. My favorites are III and VI ( I obviously love II as well). Huh.... interesting.

Love _TMP._ Immersive, beautiful, operatic, mature, cerebral, wholly unique, & widely misunderstood, _TMP_ is a hard sci-fi/gothic horror film directed by a guy who made hard sci-fi/gothic horror films. There's alot of _The Andromeda Strain_ & _The Haunting_ in it. It wasn't the _Star Trek_ movie that fans wanted, but it's the _Star Trek_ movie the franchise needed. In 1979, _TMP_ could have easily been campy like _Flash Gordon_ and _TOS._ And it's precisely what interstellar travel & first contact would be like: long hours staring at a screen into the void, accidents happen, people get killed, & it would be a journey into existential crisis.

This is my favorite Star Trek. Also favorite for my kids - teens! I bought the new Complete Adventure 4K set of the DE simply to get the 4K special longer version (where they even fix the scene with Kirk exiting the airlock!) I appreciate the work done for the DE but the SLV is the ultimate for me. The original FX by Trumbull still superior to any cgi version today.

Excellent video Chris Brumbray, but I must say some of your criticisms against "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" seem to stem from your own bias to which there's nothing wrong with that, to each their own. But, you might be surprised to find how many people really enjoy the first Star Trek movie, I know I'm one of them. The Motion Picture is the textbook example of fine wine. It just keeps getting better with age. Contrary to what you stated in the video, Paramount wasn't oblivious to what makes a good Star Trek movie. I commend Paramount and Robert Wise for not trying to follow Star Wars lead and give us the good versus evil narrative that so many other sci-fi/fantasy films of that era (looking at you "Krull" and "Battle Beyond The Stars") were trying to do and failed miserably. No, instead, Paramount decided to give us a more thought-provoking sci-fi film, which the last time I checked was in keeping with what Star Trek is about. If anyone is oblivious to what makes a good Star Trek movie, it's that guy who has the 10th letter of the alphabet twice as his first name.

This movie was surprisingly dark for Star Trek. The sequence with the transporter malfunction was just dark as all hell.

The only thing that stands up is the score...???!!! Really...???!!! This film is a masterpiece and it stands up in so many ways!!! The effects themselves are a wonder!!! The story concept is amazing!!! It has grown on me over the years and is now my favorite Trek film. I can watch it over and over.

I love Star Trek the motion picture. And thank goodness it didn’t feature a villain. As much as I love Wrath of Khan I feel it did a huge disservice to Star Trek because that essentially what every subsequent Trek film became. Villain with a doomsday weapon.

The only truly epic Star Trek movie. Also, it made more money that STII. The last time a fully powered, fully crewed USS Enterprise met the unknown. As underrated as the Wrath of Khan is overrated.

Another great move that combines science, religion and horror. An awesome film score composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith.

I think this film is closer to Gene Roddenberry’s original vision. The series had two pilots; the first considered “too cerebral,” and I’d imagine a lot of folks would feel this film was also too cerebral. And I imagine that somewhere down the line, Roddenberry heard that astronauts in our world would generally be more calm and problem-solving types of people. I recently revisited _The Fifty-Year Mission: The Second Twenty-five Years_ by Altman and Gross, and per interviews in that book, many of the writer of _Enterprise_ had a difficult time inserting drama, because A) _Enterprise_ was set closer to the present day and B) real astronauts are trained and trained and trained again to not panic and deal with the problem. An example outside of _Trek_ was invoked: _Apollo 13_ had dramatic bits added, y’know, for the audience to feel these astronauts were more like the audience. I also want to defend that long loving scene with the _Enterprise_ in _The Motion Picture,_ and I don’t think I’ve heard this defense before. Kirk’s _ Enterprise_ is presented as the pinnacle of Federation technology, and is given a loving long tour. Until this scene, fans were never allowed to admire the _Enterprise_ in that kind of detail. Then, we encounter the massive V’ger cloud, and the immensity of V’ger itself. Kinda blows the best ship we got out of the water, doesn’t it? Maybe puts us in our place. Arthur C. Clarke often invoked this quote: “The universe is not only stranger than we imagine; it is stranger than we _can_ imagine.” (Italics mine.) What has V’ger seen? How far did it evolve? And the scene where _Enterprise_ enters and explores the V’ger cloud is easily my favorite scene in the film. I probably wore out my old VHS recording, watching that slow mysterious space mystery train ride again and again. I’d never seen anything like it up to that time, and it was like, “Wow, what _is_ this?!”

This one has the best visual effects of all TOS movies 🖖

If you’re going to criticize some thing while offering details, please get your details right. Robert Wise did not replace most of the visual effects in this film with CGI; most of the shots you see were done back in the 70s. He cleaned some shots up and created a very small number of new ones that were originally story boarded, but never produced.

It's slow moving, but I could watch Kirk and Scotty fly around the Enterprise for 2 hours. The ships, the new Klingons, and the score are bright spots for sure.

You could argue that this is the most Star Trek of all the Star Trek films. Star Trek was never about action and space battles, much as I love Star Trek 2.

This is my favorite Trek film. It tries to be more than just a villain getting mad at the crew for whatever reason, the effects are absolutely stunning, even today, and the soundtrack is perfect. I'd say the only issue I have with it is the cast is underutilized (as was pointed out in this video). It has it's issues, but overall this is a great film.

Robert Wise’s Star Trek was going in the right direction then came the junk.

I disagree with the Director's Cut replacing the old effects with CGI. A few were cleaned up, sure, but by far the most CGI was to ADD a few scenes to the movie that they were unable to originally film for whatever reason (ie - the cloud dissipating while V'Ger approaches Earth and shots of the V'Ger craft shooting the plasma energy bolts into Earth orbit). Other CGI shots allowed some bad Matte paintings to be fixed, and to complete some half-finished shots. By far, most of the practical effects used in the film remain as they were. Star Wars, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Alien were amongst the last of the pre-CGI effects driven films, and it shows on the film. Every few years, new CGI comes out and makes yesterday's "Wow!" effects look dated, but the model work in these films holds up flawlessly and as a result, they don't really look dated. ST:TMP in particular was and remains a gorgeously shot film, and the Director's Cut really just completed the post-production work that should always have been done. The new CG work they added was just icing on the cake.

The Klingons vs V'Ger is one of my favorite scenes

I saw this movie opening night with my dad who was an OG trekker. It will always be my favorite. I know Khan is better and I do enjoy it too but TMP will always be the top spot for me.

Over all I liked it. It was the one film that stayed pretty true to the source material.

Buck Rogers as a character existed long before star wars

UGH! "Battlestar Galactica" is NOT a "STAR WARS" knockoff!

My dad was a huge fan of the original series and watched it in reruns all the time. So he was quite excited to take the whole family to the movies when it came. And given that me and my sibling were under 10, taking us to the movies was a big deal and probably tight on the budget. Anyhow, although I don't remember my dad ever saying anything in particular, we never went to the theater to see the Wrath of Khan, and I'm certain that was due to the first movie being so dull. Obviously we did see Khan at some point because my dad never missed another Star Trek movie in the theater again.

I thought Star Trek The motion Picture was pretty good. The special effects in V'ger were spectacular. Sadly, the appearance of Captain Decker hasn't helped this movie.

I liked it but it was a slow-burn type of film. Loved the flyby and Kirk's face when looking over the Enterprise.

I've always liked that movie, and so did everyone else until the Internet, IIRC. Robert Wise was a top-notch filmmaker, who'd also made _The Day the Earth Stood Still_ [1951], and _The Andromeda Strain_ [1971], both of which remain monumental Sci-Fi masterworks in film. It owes more to Kubrick's _2001: A Space Odyssey_ than to _Star Wars,_ but that never disappointed me. It's a great 10 of 10 star film, that would be truly surpassed by its (first) sequel.

I enjoyed watching Star Trek The Motion picture it was like the beginning, It showed a Starship the grew into something we all loved seeing in the movies!!!

I think that you misrepresent the movie a bit. There is a focus on Decker and Illa, as the later is taken by V'ger and replaced by a probe in her image, and Decker is called upon to try to reach out to whatever of his former love may still live within the probe for information. But at the same time, Kirk, who's found himself promoted out of command and is unhappy in his desk job, jumps at the chance to take back the Enterprise and lead the mission to confront V'Ger, while struggling with a midlife crisis that will define him thru all the classic Star Trek movies and even into Generations. But Spock is the one who really shines. Throughout the original series we'd seen him struggle with his half-vulcan/half-human nature. As TMP begins, Spock is undergoing a ritual that will strip him of the last of his emotions and hopefully bring him peace. Only to be touched by V'Ger and sense that despite it's own powerful logic, it yearns for more. So, he joins the crew in their mission to V'Ger in hopes of finding his own answers. This is SUCH an important development for the character of Spock. Because he does find his answer, it's just not the one he ever expected. Spock realizes he NEEDS his human half, and thus makes peace with himself, and finally feels comfortable with who he is, rather than who anyone thinks he should be. And this would define the character in all the later Star Trek movies and TV shows he appeared in. I've always loved this movie. Yeah, it's not perfect, but it's far from bad.

Not a favorite amongst ST fans ? Really .. ? ...maybe not a favorite among the general public, but I think most ST fans loved it at the time ! The cloud scenes and the Enterprise review was a bit long .. But the Enterprise was like 'red meat' to a Trek fan like me !

I saw this movie when it premiered and it has grown on me over the years but the new Security uniforms--especially their headgear--still seems out of place.

This is first movie I ever remember. I remember lying on the couch when I was 3 and it was on TV. The earliest memory I have. Love it

The effects work on the Enterprise still hold up. Those were done by Douglas Trumbull on 65mm negative. The stuff done by John Dykstra was done on Vistavision. Both were restored from the negative and seen in the best quality ever on the Directors Cut that was restored in 4K. Just wish they hadn't done the modern color timing, the Atmos mix or used digital noise reduction. I understand why they did though they wanted to make it like a new movie.

The video claims that most of the special effects were replaced with CGI for the Director's Edition, but this is not true. There were a few shots replaced entirely by CGI, and a few put in where there had previously been no effects shot made - the arrival at the centre of Vger is the major one. But otherwise, Trumball and Dykstra's work remains largely intact, and to my mind represents some of the finest movie minature work ever put on film.

I LOVE this movie

Always had a very very massive soft spot for this. It gets criticized for being a 2001 Space Odyssey clone but I've always argue that's part of the charm of it. It takes the love of humanity that the show always strived for while battling it out with the cold clinical tone of said film, and in the end you get a film that in a weird way argues how it's people who matter in the end. And the special effects are amazing. I mean hey it gets compared to 2001 for a reason Like the other Star Trek films but none of them with maybe the exception of Star Trek 2, 3 & 6 ever really did it for me like Motion Picture did in terms of asking thought provoking questions. Seriously need to finally get the 4K because it's the only one that finally also has the VHS TV cut that I grew up on.

This one is proper sci fi, The most grown up of all the ST films. As a liitle kid back at the time when it came out i thought it was not very good as i was expecting more Star Wars action but now i'm much older i much prefer this to the endless Shoot em up's. Great film.

TMP is an acquired taste for the most discerning of Star Trek fans, a connoisseur of all things Trek, if you will.

major mistake in your video, Star Trek the motion picture was already on the drawing board prior to the release of Star Wars. They did throw a lot more money at the movie and did tons of special effects reshoots after its huge box office though.

Most of the visual effects for the Director's cut were NOT redone with cgi.

Can you do FAST & FURIOUS Revisited?

Its the best ST movie of all time, I guess you had to be a TOS fan watching it on the small screen. The scene when Scotty takes Kirk over to the Enterprise refit was the first time the fans and Kirk had seen the ship. It was a shared experience and that score,,,,,, worth th admission. The directors cut is the one I watch as it picks up the pace and changes some effects. Then the Blu Ray and 4K version are both where you need to go to watch. No other Trek movie was closest to Genes view of Trek. Being there, before the internet and before toxic fans and haters was perfect.

We owned a big movie theatre when this picture came out, and I remember opening weekend crowds applauding wildly at the beginning and the end. Reception softened in the following weeks, but it certainly had the feel of an "A" level show in its early days of release. Its reputation for being completed right up until release are not exaggerated: our print came via armed courier directly from the lab, arriving to our theatre about a half hour after the first show was scheduled to begin. My father's announcement to the patrons only added to the excitement and anticipation.

Adjusted for inflation, the highest grossing Star Trek labeled film other than Into Darkness, though this is obscured by the fact that Paramount reported only the first three weeks of grosses.

The tale that Paramount got in gear to make this movie after Star Wars has been well debunked tracking its timeline. It was CLOSE ENCOUNTERS that prompted them to think of doing their own spin on alien visitation and hence, the slow burn of the plot unravel. Also, calling the TV reboot "Phase 2" is revisionist history as it wasn't called that at the time and only in retrospect, much like the fabled studio musicians, "The Wrecking Crew" were not called that back in the day, but the label applied later.

I loved "Tales of The Gold Monkey". I owned a wood carved Cutter's Goose. After I read about his admission of sexual assault, I broke the Gutter's Goose into parts and threw it away. I had yet to buy ToTGM on DVD, so I was able to not have wasted that money.

I totally want to see Zon make an appearance in ST: Strange Worlds. That’d be a fan deep cut for sure.

I love TMP for its epic vision. I love Wrath of Khan for its thrills and submarine warfare. I love voyage Home for the comic touches and time travel. I REALLY love Star Trek 5 because despite its flaws, it FEELS like a true TOS episode and has emotional highs and McCoy’s best scene ever.

This movie is so slow it feels like you’re watching it in slow motion. Weird naval inspired outfits don’t work either. Scotty unrecognisable, everyone else was good.

I would never call it a bad film....
