I'd love to see Marina in her own (Netflix?) comedy series as a police psychic fraud who frames other people so she can sell her book.

whoopie was a weird addition because she was fairly famous at this time. The Guinin character I felt was a decent addition to the show. It gave the ship the 10-forward lounge that showed the crew in a relaxed setting for their off hours and a bartender that had a mysterious backstory and interesting intuition for future episodes.

I thought she was poorly written. She knows about the Borg...but said nothing (literally for decades or possibly centuries) until the Enterprise was right in front of them. She and Q have some kind of antagonistic relationship but it's never explained. She seems to have some kind of power to fight with Q, but that power is never demonstrated. In fact we never learn much of anything about her species: how she got to Earth in the 1800s, or how she came to be in, then leave, the Nexus. Why does she think being in the Nexus is like being "inside joy", yet Picard and Kirk get disillusioned within minutes of being there? Is her species particularly vulnerable to that sort of influence? As a character it always seemed like she was treated as an afterthought. "How do we develop Guinan?" "Just say she doesn't like Q, we'll fill the rest in later." But they never followed up with anything. There is a slight hint that she has a long standing, special friendship with Picard which is kinda addressed in Time's Arrow, but she doesn't really do anything in those episodes, and she doesn't interact with Picard much more than anyone else. She could have been so much more.

Whoopi has been a fan of Star Trek since TOS - mostly due to Nichelle Nichols. As a child, she saw Uhura on T.V. and seeing a black woman in a position of power and not as a maid made her run around the house screaming with excitement and showed her she could anything and this inspired her to become an actress and comedian. When Goldberg later learned that her friend LeVar Burton had been cast in a role for a new Star Trek series, she asked him to tell Gene Roddenberry that she also wanted to be on the show. When the producers didn't take her request seriously, Goldberg contacted Roddenberry directly and he accepted her request.

Dr Pulaski's character was written as a Dr. McCoy to Data to bring back the McCoy Spock dynamic of TOS. After a few episodes, it didn't work and Pulaski got to be friends with Data.

The most engaging moments of this episode were in the first 15 minutes, then it seemed to degenerate. Troi was impregnated by force, yet seemed untraumatized. Within a week, she had the child, watched it grow and watched it die. The Enterprise crew regards it all more as a curiosity than an alien violation that needs to be stopped. The new doctor projects confidence, but lacks Dr. Crusher's softer side. I'm sure young Wesley was glad to be without parental supervision, but I'm glad Dr. Crusher returned the following season.

The new doctor dissed protocol, not reporting directly to the captain, opting instead to discuss Troi's issues over drinks. When Picard arrived at Ten Forward, she ordered him to sit down and listen. She felt it was unimportant to pronounce Data's name correctly. I'm surprised she lasted the whole season,.

10:00 I think what they've figured out that if you can beam something to the transporter platform from anywhere and can beam something from the transporter platform to anywhere, then you can use the transporter room to do both. But you want to have someone present in the transporter room in case something goes wrong to start pushing buttons and turning knobs. And also not use it more than necessary.

"I would've called him Data too just because it annoyed him" -- Well, you're antagonistic and that reflects poorly on you (although if I wanted the person to go away and they couldn't take the hint, maybe then?) That said, he's an android, and would surely tell you in spite of occasionally expressing what seems to be emotion, that he is not capable of experiencing annoyance. 😄. Agreed, Pulaski is a grating character.
@jesse_cole

Surprised that these two analytical dudes didn't seem to notice that Pulaski is intended to be the female "Dr. McCoy" of the show. That's why she's old fashioned, curmudgeony, and suspicious of new technologies. She treats Data that way because McCoy treated Spock that way. Spock was all "logic and no emotion," and Data fills that role in TNG. Bones always preferred a more "human" approach, and that line by Pulaski was no doubt written to make her role clear. And just like Bones eventually comes around to Spock, Pulaski eventually warms up to Data. Maybe these dudes just never saw TOS.

Why can’t they beam the sample out? The transporter can dematerialize something then beam it out as energy or disperse it as individual atoms. That was an option in TOS.

Why can't they beam the virus and the container into a random energy pattern? In other words break down the virus and container into energy, then beam it into space without reassembling the original pattern. Or if that doesn't work for some technobabble reason, tow it with a tractor beam and dump it into the nearest star. Starfleet personnel have the least imagination when it comes to solutions.

It is possible that Pulaski might’ve been hard on Data to begin with, because the writers had the intention for a character arc. Pulaski becomes a Data’s biggest advocate by the second from the last episode of the season, peak performance.

I have way bigger questions about the transporter ... Why does Picard walk to his ready room, when he could just transport between there and the captain's chair!? Can you just transport food into your stomach if you don't have time for lunch (or transport your poo out if you don't want to take a shit)? Why are they always cutting people open to do surgery instead of transporting surgery robots into/out of them? And, most importantly, why doesn't anyone just transport Pulaski, Wesley, and Troi out into space when nobody's looking!????!!!

Dr Pulaski is super annoying when she repeatedly mocks the other crew members for being freaked out by a forced alien impregnation that is progressing at warp speed. It's clearly not a normal baby, she admits she's never seen anything like it, but she still treats anyone who voices concerns like a baby-phobic idiot. She's also mean to Data, which is like kicking a puppy. To be fair, Data is the only android of his kind and Dr Pulaski does become more likeable as the season progresses.

She's some crap attempt to make a Bones-style 'Damn it, Jim!' curmudgeonly technophobe doctor. McCoy's scepticism of tech made sense in the '60s, but it just doesn't work in the late '80s/early '90s. Also, she's needlessly a total asshat to Data, and Data is a character that fans fairly universally love.

Pretty sure this is yet another case where writers think a lot less than Treknerds do ... It's not like we don't see 10 Forward but somebody mentions going there for a drink or *anything* ... it just ... appears out of nowhere. But there's a lot of in-universe things whose presence is totally random (we hear about anbo-jyutsu constantly during the Riker-family-therapy episode ... but afaik we *never* hear (Cmdr) Riker ever mention it again) ... It's almost like they make crap up to suit immediate narrative requirements without considering whether it forms a self-consistent universe.
