Picard was knocked unconscious by a probe, and in 20 minutes, experienced a full lifetime with a wife, a family, and in the end, the death of his planet. He learned to play the flute in that life. When the probe was opened, THAT SAME flute was there, for him, as a tangible item to prove the experience was real. It was the most moving episode of the entire 8 year run.

It never ceases to amaze me how the episode "Inner Light" and the simple but beautiful tune that was integral to the episode, came to be endeared in the hearts of so many fans of TNG series.

It has been 22 years since "Inner Light" was aired , and people, both Star Trek fans and not, are still moved by this episode. I think about this episode for days after I watch it. And the nerdy flutist honors this episode with her amazing rendition of the song Picard imself learns to play.

That....was incredible. I've never heard anyone play that song with such skill and feeling.

You can tell a great song not by it's complexity, but by its simplicity. With just a slow handful of soulful notes, this piece manages to evoke all kinds of emotions and a sense of heartbreaking nostolgia... as if for a love lost, or memories of a time gone by, now gone forever... Very beautiful and hard to believe it was composed for use in an episode of Star Trek of all things.

Finally found it ! Yes I was watching Star trek Enterprise and I had to find out more about this beautiful music

This has to be the most beautiful song. Its not only the melody, but what it also means when you see the episode. A whole life resumed in a single flute and its melody. I just finished Picard season 3, and seeing all the crew, reunited in this finale made me cry. Cry of nostalgy, cry of growing old and seeing my favorite cast getting older as well. It also brought back memories of my younger self watching those series (Next Generation especially) and having such a pool of emotions from start to finish. Thank you for recreating this song as it was originally. I tried to find the same complete duo elsewhere but most other musicians always added something else or something more that removed its authenticity.

As onde of the billions of people that believe in reincarnation and that past lives are forgotten to let us focus on the lessons of this one (but still stored in our unconscious mind), I see a beautiful spiritual metaphor in this episode. It is bittersweet that by absorving the memories of a good man and a people deceased a long time ago, Picard could experiment what in this his choices denied him, like being a husband and a father with a stable life. We all had and will have countless chances to do everything. Maybe even be captains of starships. ❤️

Absolutely beautiful, and so uniquely distinct. I remember when I was a kid I remember vividly hearing that same melody but I never really knew what it was, I asked my uncle watching Star Trek on the television set and he was telling me about all about the show. I guess as a kid I had other things going on in my mind because I forgot all about it, until recently when I decided to watch the series again. When I heard The Inner Light again, I was snapped back to that time when I was six or seven years old and I had just fell in love with it, and you play it so eloquently, thank you.

I tried to play this for years...beside a lake...and my dogs decided to throw my flute into the lake....I think it was´nt good at all.....

When your emotions are often numb from decades of emotional abuse, this is just what I needed to feel again.

A more classic rendering than I’ve ever heard of this song. It may have made its way into classic tv but it’s actually an old folk tune about a lullaby that dragons would sing to their young to comfort them. Thank you for that comfort. In today’s world I need it.

This piece has been in my head since Inner Light aired. I've always wanted to learn to play it, but never had the space to do it where practicing wouldn't annoy people. All I have is a tin whistle in the key of D, which I can sort of play the basic tune on. I used to play the flute in high school band. Your playing is beautiful.

I'm a cynical music geek who has played tin whistle for over a decade. If you did anything wrong, I'd be overjoyed to drill into you. Nope: you played the Hell out of it. Go to your local symphony hall, wear that Picard shirt, play that song on a loop next to a sign that says "If you know, you know" and you will make more money busking than a seasoned engineer will ever hope to make in their lifetime.

I've seen this performed by many, but only one other matches this, and that's the original.
