I love that the Prefect was ... very competent. Even with his wife dying, he was calm, collected, and willing to be reasonable at all points. Love that guy.

Finding out that Redjac, a.k.a. Red Jack, was an alien that draws sustenance from emotion and Mr. Spock noting that such a thing is not unknown,...may have significance in a future episode. In my circle of long-term friends (multiple decades of hanging out together) there will be the occasional outburst of "Die, die,...everybody die!" because TOS is near and dear to all of our hearts.

I believe it was in the novel _Q Squared_ that Q ends up suffering the same fate as Hengist, i.e, existing as a consciousness dispersed in space. It is considered beta canon that the voice of the _Enterprise_ computer is Pike's Number One. In at least one novel, we learn that she held a higher computer classification than even Spock had. She was responsible in large part for making starship computers as vocally interactive as we see in TOS, so, naturally, she used her own voice in her technical experiments -- a voice that would remain the Starfleet standard for two generations. I cannot confirm the following, but I do remember reading somewhere that, before she died, Majel Barrett recorded a lot of words for the audio archive so that if future showrunners had enough respect to do so, her voice could be the starship computer voice forever. I never bought the idea that Scotty would suddenly start resenting all women, even if the mistake of one resulted in him getting severely injured. That's just not Scotty. The Scotty I know would have said, "Think nothing of it, lassie. I'll soon be right as rain. It coulda happened to anyone." But I'm sure Doohan appreciated being able to leave engineering and stretch his acting wings a wee bit.

Robert Bloch was a known horror writer associated with H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos who also wrote What Are Little Girls Made Of and Catspaw, both of which feature Mythos themes of horrific, incomprehensible, ancient aliens from beyond our galaxy. Bloch also wrote the novel that the Alfred Hitchcock movie Psycho was adapted from. Every now and then one of my high school buddies or I will laugh and say, "Die, die, die, everybody die..." just because it amuses. But yeah, this is a mid level episode. Fun, quotable, silly.

Hello, @WarpReactor and friends! Lol....this episode is really strange but with an interesting premise. Well worth the watch but middle of the pack. Back in the late 60's-early 70's this was kind of a breakout premise, as events like Jack-The-Ripper and others were pretty popular and intriguing stories...it was the big era of Ripley's Believe It Or Not and Guinness Book Of World Records, after all. Kids were so into stuff like this. While this will never be the best ST episode, it certainly will not be the worst!😂 Still, we love them all anyways as cult classics. In fact, the very worst are probably more beloved than the middlers! I have fond memories of this strange episode, but no illusions that it is anything more than an okay one. Stay tuned for next week, however, as we are in for a real treat! So, until then, LLAP & Vulc'n'Roll! 🖖🤘

Yes. I think Warp Reactor's misunderstanding lies in the fact that although Bones is not a full on psychiatrist, he is a qualified psychologist. In fact, he uses psychology on both Kirk and Spock when they're kidding themselves.. although his approach can be rather "blunt" at times.

The psychology of this episode is convenient for the plot. You need Scotty to potentially have a hidden resentment towards women at the beginning. Later women need to be more easily frightened for Red-Jack to make sense. Alien belly buttons were given a pass by the censors according to the story that Gene Roddenberry convinced Standards and Practices "this is just how the aliens dress". You didn't have to tiptoe around the opening scene. Kirk and crew are in a bar or restaurant that features belly dancers. My ex. girlfriend and I frequented a restaurant near her that had belly dancers on Friday nights.

There was excellent Uhura navel in "Mirror, Mirror". Barbara Eden's pregnant belly was covered in the first season of Jeannie, and the navel covered after because of stretch marks. But "Batman" showed navel. Mary Ann showed sometimes. "Burkes Law" showed Nancy Kovack, and others. Even in an episode of "The Untouchables" Barbara Nichols showed boob with pasties.

I would agree that this is generally considered a mid-level episode. Not best of the best, but not bottom of the pack either. When the demonic stuff started happening that used to freak me out as a kid. You are sort of on the track about Charles Dierkop’s nose. He wasn’t a boxer, but he did get into several fights as a kid and you see the result. He was also a regular on the 1970s cop show “Police Woman”. Until his death this year, that show had the distinction of being the oldest TV series with all of its principal cast members still living. Tanya Lemani, who played the belly dancer, said that both Shatner and Doohan asked her out. She briefly dated Shatner and she friend zoned Doohan. I’d like to think that John Fiedler got a kick out of this role, no pun intended, as he got to play against type or subvert the type.

I love WF but the briefing room scene was the longest in the series and the informality of it bothered me. I would have preferred full dress uniforms for Scotty's trial just like Spock's court-martial in The Menagerie and Kirk's in Court Martial. Also, let's have Jaris as judge and not set back against the wall, Hengist as prosecutor, Spock as Scotty's defender and Kirk on the bridge to give a Captain's log about the crew's concern for the dead. The Argelian empathic scene was spectacular.

In the Cold Open, the curious throw-away lines mentioning Scotty's hatred of women, to which you had a strong reaction, is another example of the broadcast order not following the production order. This episode should have followed the episodes _The Changeling_ or _The Lights of Zetar._ About the writing Star Trek's original series is so rich in layers of storytelling that episodes that were boring when watched at 11 y-o are little jewels of complexity and acute observations in adult life. Maybe, unknowingly, both Roddenberry and the Author of the Week poured in much more than just storylines into their scripts -and rewrites-...

Yep, both the psychotricorder and the Enterprise's ability to act as an infallible lie detector are forgotten after this episode, which gets rather annoying considering the number of episodes across the various series where that technology would be incredibly useful. I think I recall that with TNG, the writers intentionally ignored that technology, as it would have made Counselor Troi rather redundant, not to mention that Troi was already a character the writers had a hell of a time trying to write for, especially in the earlier seasons.

Many were a little disappointed simply because we had been waiting so long for Star Trek to return and it didn't quite hit on cylinders. The director's cut helped smooth some issues out. I also recently read how the movie was rushed into theaters before it was fully complete.
