Star Trek VI's climactic battle above Khitomer between the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC1701-A and U.S.S. Excelsior NCC 2000 against the prototype Klingon Bird of Prey that can fire while cloaked...I know it's not edited perfectly but my wrist was hurting at the time...but I wanted to share this underrated battle with fellow Trekkies.

What really stood out to me in this movie - was the way that Kirk was surprised by the Klingon Chancellor's motives. In the beginning, Kirk cynically views the Klingons with suspicion and distrust. Later on when the Klingon Chancellor is dying, he says, "Don't let it end like this", indicating that he did not want the peace initiative to fail. It was in stark contrast to the traditional Klingon blood oath, which was what Kirk expected. Kirk later says, "It never occurred to me that Chancellor _____ was telling telling the truth."

@perfectsplit5515 10 лет назад
Kirk: "Klingons. I've never trusted them. And I never will. I will never forgive them for the death of my son David." O'Brien: "The gentleness was bred out of these people (Cardassians) a long time ago." Worf: "Now is always the time for those feelings (of hatred for the Romulans)" I liked that those characters were flawed, because it made them more real. Not cardboard cutouts.

You had to love that look on General Chang's face...he's like WTF? No torpedo acts like that...oh, hell, wait...LOL. Christopher Plummer has one of those voices that is so wonderfully versatile. He can do the classics-quoting Klingon warlord or the wizened Master of the Way of the Voice with such class and skill :) A magnificent actor. Watching the Enterprise and Excelsior pound the hell out of that Bird of Prey at the end was one of the most gratifying things I remember about this movie. With their advantage of the special cloak removed, the BoP was absolutely no match for the firepower of two Federation starships. Moral of the story? You just don't mess with Federation starships, lol. ^_^

When Kirk gets up out of his command chair to order the homing photon torpedo to be fired, you can see to his left what appears to be damaged wires and circuitry hanging down from the bridge ceiling, but in the last scene in the movie when the Enterprise crew is informed by Starfleet Command to return to spacedock for the Enterprise to be decommissioned, the damaged apparatus hanging down from the bridge ceiling is nowhere to be seen. The Enterprise crew must have done a really fast repair job! Lol!

New ST movies are just totally different styles of Sci Fi. Star Trek was always an intellectual show first, and was never really big on special effects. Most of the movies were done on strict budgets and the TV shows were cheesy at best. But good writing and great characters made up for the lack of dazzle. The new movies are more about dazzle than character building. Everything seems forced. Oh well, at least most of the movies and shows are on Netflix so we can still appreciate them.
@TheCormTube

Agreed, I think this is my favourite of all the films....the new ones are what they are, Star Trek for the masses.....but no amount of big budget 21st century special effects and excessive lens flare can match the overall excellent package that was put together here. I've watched the final bit of the battle where the Enterprise and Excelsior pummel the little bird of prey about 100+ times.....

One thing I love about Trek is how ship/model explosions have stages/segments to them. On the Bird-Of-Prey, we see first the main hull explode, then a section of the wing battery, then the reactor core exploding. Those types of destructions really help convey the scale and "heft" of the explosion, something lost with CGI models.

***** I loved the diagrams and text in "Mr Scott's" it really gave life and a discipline to 1701. G Roddenberry's comments on the few number of Connies makes sense, Starfleet always needs the Enterprise to put out one fire or another especially if she is near Earth. Although when Admiral Morrow says in STIII, The Enterprise is over 20yrs old, we (starfleet) feel her day is over. That statement contradicts GR's philosophy. Why retire such a valuable asset?
