Star Trek - What phasers do

According to the "The Making of Star Trek", by Gene Roddenberry and Stephen Whitfield,
"All phasers emit a beam of energy similar to the light beam emitted by a laser, but of a pulsating nature that can be 'phased' to interfere or interact with the wave pattern of any molecular form. Phaser beams can be fire steadily, or in intermittent 'squirts' or 'phased' energy. They can be set to 'dematerialize', (converting matter into energy), 'disrupt' (breaking down matter), or 'stun' (neural impact)"
It's a fancy way of saying it's a tactical laser with an added property: the ability to destroy matter at the sub-molecular level by agitating the atoms directly. A disintegration ray.

The beam width dispersion is also a pretty impressive feature of the phaser. I recall it being used a few times in The Original Series, especially in the episode "The Return of the Archons" where they use it on a crowd of brainwashed civilians on stun setting if I recall correctly.

not really, they are just in lower setting, may be there is regulation about using higher setting. Varporising people is not civilize
@erentheca
@erentheca 5 месяцев назад
Yes, really. There is no canon or even non-canon explanation for why they are several orders of magnitude less powerful. You can do the writer's job for them by crafting theories to make the stories work, but that simply underscores how wantonly neglectful they were.@@congnghequansuvn474
@biketrailing4277
@biketrailing4277 5 месяцев назад
Your explanation is inverted. First and foremost, Starfleet's primary purpose is exploration and scientific discovery. For a phaser to be useful tool of explorers, it needs to be able to fire in multiple settings and amplitudes. The fact that it can hit multiple opponents at once or even vaporize them is mostly incidental. These properties are far more important in its role as a versatile tool, whether that be vaporizing rock or liquids, or distributing energy evenly to turn stone into a source of heat. But, even in a combat role, if an ill-conceived regulation dialed down a phaser's power dramatically, any peer or near-peer adversary could easily take advantage of that by employing personal shields or armor sufficient to defeat the lower energy bolts. A high power sustained beam is simply better suited to defeating such countermeasures. Additionally, I find the argument "vaporizing people is not civilize" to be flawed. There isn't anything particular more or less civilized about a lethal blast, except the degree of suffering it may cause. But, if there is any reason to govern the energy output of a phaser, it would be out of concern for the integrity of the hull of a vessel. But this also fails because the writers never made that argument. They had no argument whatsoever. They were simply unable or unwilling to appropriately write beam phasers into their stories which shows a lack of imagination and severe limitations as to the type of stories they were telling. If every plot is "we must do X to stop bad guys from destroying the universe", equipping your side with powerful and effective arms diffuses the only source of tension. @@congnghequansuvn474

The TOS phaser also seems to be the most powerful of the series. In the Salt Vampire episode, you see the doctor shoot at Kirk with an old style laser that has been refitted with phaser innards and not only does it knock down a multi-ton rock, but it also cuts it in half! This means you can also set them to have massive kinetic energy, as also seen in The Search For Spock when Kirk shoots a Klingon and it picks him up and sends him slamming into a rock wall. Compare that to the Discovery phaser, which I thought were in the same time line, and they only go "pew pew". In one of the first episodes of Discovery, the one where they encounter the giant tardigrade, Michael Burnham says "RUN". If they had TOS phasers, there literally would be nothing left to run from after about a half a second.

It's funny, back in the 70s if you read some of the literature about star trek, some of it mentioned a different way phasers worked. Of course, we all remember that scene in TNG where aliens were shooting lasers at the Enterprise, and Picard or Riker says something like "Lasers? They can't even penetrate our navigation deflectors". This would indicate to me that phasers are not just a tactical laser. Back in the 70s, I read a better explanation, that phasers are a combined form of energy beam. Combining a particle beam, with a phased laser, thus "Phaser". This makes sense since we know that a laser is not much of a threat to federation ships.

Sauce. Animation cartoon drawing post production. Sometime you can see the actors 'angle' of beam is off. Like if you had a flashlight and the beam emitter was up or down from target. They had to remain very still while pretending to fire.. if they moved or their hand moved - the beam illusion was lost. Explosions were on-set fireworks at times. SciFi still uses that basic effect in 2018 but it's computer drawn now.The sounds are added post production 2.
