I'd prefer using a 6 barreled 20 mm Vulcan autocannon like the ones on US Navy ships which double as CIWS point defense. Variable RoF to 4,500+ rounds/min after latest block upgrade on the barrels to better tolerate heat build up.
Since all Star Wars combat is based on WW2 in one form or another, one might use this comparison to explain the Laser Cannon vs. Turbolaser divide: Laser cannons are equivalent to autocannons such as the 40mm anti-air guns used on WW2 ships. Turbolasers are equivalent to full-sized naval guns, and the lighter ones can, like the ubiquitous 5-inch gun of the WW2 US Navy, be in defensive roles as well.
Dude its like 50mm cannon and a recoilless rifle. 50mm cannon is called cannon even though its a machine gun. And recoilless rifle is called rifle even though its an anti tank weapon.
@@chrysllerryu4171 Great... Now I'm trying to imagine what a 50 mm machine gun would look like. XD Given that those rounds would be the size of grenades... Hmmh... Actually, what about firing those kinds of grenades out of a machine gun? No... That seems like a bad idea... Or does it? ...
Given the slow (i.e. visible) travel speed I would say that while blasters and laser cannons are technically energy weapons, they are not lasers per se but rather a form of energy pulse driver.
again, they are most likely plasma weapons, especially considering how irregular the burns created are, lasers would create very precise holes rather than splash like burns.
You can't apply real physics to Star Wars ;) At least in Legends but I think also in canon, blasters are stated as being particle guns with some of them being plasma guns (most notably the DC-15 series, which is why they were very effective against droids). Blaster technology is mostly used in small arms and light cannons while laser cannons are much more powerful but mostly used in spaceships and large vehicles like the AT-AT (the AT-AT's heavy chin cannons are lasers while it's secondary cannons are blasters). Laser technology is also much older. In the Pre-Republic and early Republic eras, laser weapons used by infantry were mostly heavy stationary cannons comparable to the E-Web repeating blaster, while the standard portable guns were mostly slug-throwers. There were also portable laser cannons but they were really heavy and required a backpack containing a large energy pack, similar to early lightsaber technology (lightsabers are plasma weapons, however).
Carolus Magnus no, they are plasma canons. The light is focused through the kyber Crystal which is then applied to the tibina gass, ionising it, and then releasing it as a bolt. They are plasma canons and they work on the same principles as the blasters do.
proton beams, actually. Not lasers, strictly speaking in real world terms those would be considered particle accelerators. Most proton beams are of the composite-beam type, where multiple proton beams are connected to deal more damage. Composite-beam weapons are also reffered to as 'lasers' of course, like most star wars energy weapons, but they arent literal lasers like our understanding of them. There are a handful of non-composite-beam proton beam weapons though, such as the star destroyer Accuser and the Lancet aerial artillery.
I've done some thinking about star wars weapons, and I think the term "Turbolaser Battery" usually refers to a set of turbolaser weapons that are bunched up together to focus all their firepower on the same target. A great visualization of this is the Bellator-class Star Dreadnought. You can visibly see the turrets grouped up into small clusters and large clusters rather than evenly distributed across the entire surface of the ship.
Yup, it's also commonly used to delineate a set of four turrets in a formation like you've described. Even if it's a grouping of eight, it'd be two batteries. Not taking into account number of barrels.
7:22, ion cannons are also useful against shields, just a note. The electrical discharge they produce was specifically noted at several points as being especially potent and draining shields, allowing the turbolasers to then finish them off.
@@ufukcangencoglu2279 No, it seems even dumber, because the clone wars had been over for years and the Empire was certainly very aware that they were dealing with The Rebel Alliance when they built the Death Star. Movies don't have to make perfect sense dude, there are always holes
@@ufukcangencoglu2279 Its pure plot... The CIS literally based their navy around numbers.. CIS fleets would literally carry thousands of vulture droids for fighter combat.
Actually the empire military and navy isn't designed for war at all. Its designed for the intimidation, it's designed to scare the locals not to uprise.
3:46 If anyone is wondering what game that is. It’s called Space Engineers, it’s an amazing game with a huge mod and ship building community. It’s a space based building exploration game that has realistic voxel damage. I would suggest checking it out. If you want a familiar face, check out Captain Shack. He does Empire at War and Space Engineers. Edit: I would like to add how there is a HUGE Star Wars community in Space Engineers. There are plenty of builds and mods for Star Wars stuff. The ARMCO mods for Star Wars shops is a good example. And Captain Shack is leading that modding team.
Great explanation, just what I've been looking for! All we need now is to sort out exactly what missile does what - do they take down shields, do they go through shields, are they torpedoes, missiles -- Argh!
missles really work kinda like turbo-lasers but are individualy smaller because its a single munition instead of a huge gun connected to a reactor but if you but 200 munitions launchers on a ship the cost of all the missles builds up really fast so turbo-lasers are used more
See, The Thing is OP af. The ONLY reason it didn't destroy all of humanity is because it hit the most secluded place on Earth. It'll take over Coruscant rather quickly thanks to the massive amount of beings.
2:02 I like how they made that blue laser from like 3 seconds of revenge of the Sith a whole objective for battlefront 2 2017. You gotta admit, EA sees a lot of missed details from movies that they can incorporate into their game
Broadside does have combat merit though. You can more easily make straifing runs and take on multiple targets at once. It also tends to minimize your target profile.

This vid popped up on my recommended and seeing the 3 year’s ago post date, I felt happy knowing I’ve spent over 3 years subbed and watching your content.
"Crossing the T" is a classic naval strategy that was used through WW2. The Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Eastern Visayan region in the Philippines was the last major use of this tactic. Turrets were movable in ~270 degrees horizontal and ~70 degrees vertical.

Finally a Good, Understandable and Unbiased SW Video that Breaks down what's also my Fav Part of the Star Wars Universe, Fleet Vs Fleet Warfare! Despite taking place " A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away " all Sides pretty much still use a lot of Tac/Strat from the Day's when Massive Ship of the Line's delivered huge Broadsides at each other, while Soldiers/Crew used Muskets to Snipe at each other.
Shadow Of Sundered Star I don’t know about that... Star Wars is famous for expanding on everything that can possibly be expanded on. There are frequently entire stories crafted around a single ship that appeared for seconds in the movies or another source. The universe is almost as fleshed out as our own. The Legends storyline goes before 25,000 BBY to after 150 ABY. The Canon is a lot less expansive, as it has only had 4 years to expand, but it is still incredibly well fleshed out.

I think the Conqueror Star Destroyer is an underrated Battleship. It's possesses the power to destroy most single targets, and is excellent in a ground support role. I'd love to make a Lego version.
Thank you this is exactly the information I was looking for, I'm currently scratch building a model of a ship concept I designed a while ago, this video definitely helped me decide where to place the different types of armament.
Commander Lakar I think that the replicators would lose because the Empire had a much larger fleet. But the Replicators could win if they could board as much Star Destroyers as possible
keep in mind the replicators borg like ability to adapt to powerful weapons like the plasma beams of the Asgard. I imagine replicator ships would adapt to turbo lasers and laser cannons within the first dozen battles and then the starwars universe would get totally owned.
Daleks would crush the Borg. They can adapt like the Borg can, but faster and better. They have time travel, and weapons that are too powerful to adapt to. One Dalek ship can destroy an entire PLANET by itself. Not even the Time Lords stood a chance.
Question, I remember during an episode of star wars the clone wars, droids were loading canisters into cannons situated on the side of a providence class ship. Was curious if those acted in a similar fashion to how our brass casings work in our bullets or if they were fired and destroyed in the process.
Verry great vid m8! Could you go deeper on how mutch power laser cannons and projectiles have and how effective they are to certain armor how they handle lets say a few feet of iron plating or shields how they work and what they can take from certain weapons. I know this is a lot but i think all of your subs will apreciate it
Mega Star Destroyer (The Supremacy), with all the ships it can carry, Resurgent, Mandator 4 etc. Vs the US entire Military (Preferably to be done after the release of The Last Jedi.)
The auto-generated Closed Captioning is actually really good on this video (and your others) for some reason; I suspect it's because you speak so clearly and understandably!
I had a cool idea for a ship: the Overlord-Class Battlecruiser (ship) These have turrets that slide along rails that run through the middle of the ship, and thus, the firepower can be spread in such a way that you can easily broadside someone, no questions asked. The ship is an irregular pentagon, with two massive turbolaser batteries near its engine bays. Only a few turrets actually slide, and these are medium-sized batteries. The super batteries on the sides can turn a little, but only up and down. It handles any assault pretty well, except for along the back, however, its sister ship class, the Overseer-class Heavy Cruiser, is a supercarrier which can provide massive fighter screens if need be.
@@dilon6168 And that's all that matters really. I've been kind of sort of light spoiled, (Saw a couple of non spoiler reviews and a few thumbnails on some youtubers) but I'm going to try to go in and just have a good time.
+dariomasi9 Actually it's been mentioned that while they can teleport to other universes they can't teleport to a SPECIFIC point within the same universe which is why they wanted to get the teleportation technology from Black Mesa so that means they'd still need to travel in space. And of course they'd immediately reverse engineer the firsthyper drive they got ahold of to improve upon it then add it to their arsenal and make their job easier (That is if they didn't have something like it already.)
The best comparison I can think of for turbolasers vs laser cannons (and this is mainly because I've been playing craploads of World of Warships lately) is naval artillery vs anti-air emplacements on WWI/WWII-era ships. Naval artillery is used for ship-to-ship combat, just like turbolasers are. Artillery is slow and heavy, limiting its usefulness against aerial craft (starfighters and bombers, in Star Wars). Like turbolasers, it comes in different calibres relative to the size of the vessel: destroyers and light cruisers will carry smaller guns, generally in single or double gun arrangements, while heavy cruisers, battlecruisers and battleships will have much heavier ordinance which tend to be mounted in triple or even quadruple gun turrets. While smaller artillery calibres will rotate and reload faster than their heavier counterparts, they're all too slow and cumbersome to hit aerial craft. Anti-air guns, however, are the opposite. Fast-firing and moving, they're much more suitable for hitting smaller, nimbler targets like aircraft. While you *could* turn them on other sea-faring ships, their shorter range and much smaller calibre will ensure they have limited to no effect on the larger, more heavily-armoured vessels. As such, anti-air guns are reserved solely for that purpose: fending off aircraft.
Bless you for take the time to break down everything that you do... You are how I introduced my girl to star wars and she got it only because the way you made it make sense to her...... 🙏🔥😎🔥🙏 Once let the force be with you
They are essentially naval cannons, but instead of big hunks of steel its heated plasma. Laser cannons are more like a Bofors or an Orelikon anti aircraft weapons, and blasters are pretty much plasma slinging... well... guns
Yup! A lot of the stuff in SW is based off WWII tech, that's the reason it's red lasers for Rebels, and green for the Empire instead of the other way around. German tracers during WWII were green, and American were orange-y-red.
@@5peciesunkn0wn Kinda ironic associating America with a small rebellion, given that in WW2 (and today) it's probably the single most powerful country on the planet. To make matters worse, the allies included the UK, which at the time very much still was a literal empire that spanned half the planet. (even if that empire wasn't so cohesive perhaps) Although you can't claim them to be the good guys in any way, the Germans and especially the Japanese were very much the underdogs of that war. (as in they were relatively small countries that somehow got it into their head they could take on much bigger rivals.)
In a game that I play called Rebel Galaxy, they make heavy use of Broadsides, but in that Universe it makes sense; even though I personally don't like it. Loved the video mate.
Space is Naval? Me: Jar Jar, where are your battleships? Jar Jar Binks: Mesa use submarines wiz za ports open! Me: No! I mean your capital ships that destroy other ships in space! Jar Jar Binks: Well, me anty aircraft is throwing speers in se air! Me: So that's how battleships die so easily...
Many sci-fi stories refer to a space force as a navy because they operate in similar manners. A navy consists of fleets of capital ships with smaller support ships and/or fighters, and so does a space force, so that's why the Imperial Navy refers to the star destroyers etc and not to water-based vessels.
No challenge. Delta has Katarn MK 2 armor which, if you look at triple zero, was rated to stop a verpine shatter round at point blank range. Combine that with the DC 17 and Noble team doesn't stand a chance.
I know this video is super old, but you should do one where you talk about stuff like Chiss Mazers and other alternative weapon types to the turbolaser.

Artofwar 10 Actually Arc troopers were superior than clone commandos in combat. The commandos weren't used in combat missions they were more used in rescuing missions without getting detected
Clash Gamer yes but i think it will be fair if they didnt know each other at all (somehow) and clone commandos are pretty effective fighters as seen in TCW
blaster- anti infantry, lasercannon- antiaircraft/antimaterial-cannon, turbolaser- atillery cannon, it makes sense too, mostly all slugthrowers fall in one of these aplications, their is a specific need satisfied with any of these weapons types
5:00 The Imperial II-class Star Destroyer [...] did not have a dedicated point-defense system. Its *screen* of upwards to 20 lesser *Destroyers* : "Are we a joke to you?"
The terminators are far more superior than most of the battle droids so it's highly unlikely but the T-800 didn't fair well at all against direct energy weapons so Skynet would have to start mass producing T-850s if it didn't already.
Insert name here Plasma Rifles were far more destructive than Star Wars blasters despite being more primitive. A single Plasma Bolt from an HK Tank is Able to Obliterate a human being in a steam explosion whereas the similar scale AT-ST Blaster Cannon rounds just leave a small size hole in a person's body and flinging him back a few feet. A T-800 can tank a few Plasma Rounds before going down. A B2 Super Battle Droid can't take more than 2 hits from a Blaster.
+Richard Ched If that's the case then Skynet wouldn't even need the T-850s because the units it already has could survive dozens of shots which is and even easier win.
To expand upon what chrysller ryu said: Turbo lasers are the anti-ship (other naval vessels), bombardment (siege/anti-structure operations) 16in guns of WWII battleships. Laser cannons are the Bofors 40mm flak cannon and the .50 cal machine guns. Bombardment: such as the naval bombardment of Iwo Jima prior to invasion by US troops. Anti-ship: such as the Battle of Surigao Straight during the Battle of Leyte Gulf (the final ship-to-ship engagement involving crossing-the-T, or full broadside by an entire fleet against an opposing force, in history) Anti-aircraft: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jAxdgeHqpJA.html many countries, including the US, still use the Bofors to this day. That is how versatile and powerful this weapon is.
No members of the Rebel Alliance is a hero. They are terrorists fighting against the legitimate, stable government. They may have individual good people, but they are not heroes.
+Ethan Rodriguez That's not even a warm up for space marines. Not to be a fanboy, but you're talking about a bunch of baseline human conscripts with basic projectile weaponry versus genetically modified supersoldier veterans of hundreds of wars wearing powerarmor capable of surviving nukes and wielding guns that are essentially machinegun missile launchers.
CrossedSpace The Galactic republic wouldn't win the only way they could win would be if the Jedis somehow can board the ships or learn Clone Troopers to fight with melee weapons cause Borg Drones can adapt long range weapons and also turbolasers
CrossedSpace the republuc could win with star fighter numbers and stretegy, but the borg would have numbers in capital ships. The republic also has less territory than the empire.
Shadow Of Sundered Star The First battle would be won by the Covenant but the Borg had technology that made them discover what sort of weapons ships used and then made their shields so the weapons couldn't do any damage to them so I think the Borg would win and they had a fleet of atleast 7000 borg cubes
A good way of explaining turbolasers vs. lasers would be to compare them to real-world naval weapons. A battleship for example would have its primary guns for engaging other capital ships, secondary guns to defend agianst smaller ships like corvettes or torpedo boats, anti-aircraft cannons and auto-cannons, which might also serve dual-purpose for defense against small ships.
+Blood Reaper 88 If Spartans aren't allowed then the marines get slaughtered. If they're allowed then the vamps lose because they can't get past the energy shielding, can't dent Spartan armor and Spartans are stronger and faster than the vamps
One of my favorite sci-fi novels of all time is called A Choice of Treasons by JL Doty. One of the reasons it's my favorite is because even though Doty is actually a laser physicist he refuses to use them in his story. Instead capital ship weapons are cannons that actually launch nuclear warheads into hyperspace, so the shells can cross hundreds of millions of kilometers in the blink of an eye.
Capital ship nukes act more like a EMP weapon in space unless they impact the hull of a vessel directly. In the latter case the explosion is sort of weaker than it should be in the atmosphere and the resulting decompression is likely to kill more.
You missed the mass driver cannons, which are superheated slugs fired at an extremely high velocity to take advantage of the way shields are made (normally the majority of the shield is dedicated to blocking energy based vs projectiles). They would piece the shield and, with the heat and velocity, rip a nice clean hole in the hull of the ship. Also I believe ion cannons were more common than you stated, as they were used to drop the shields for the turbolasers which had a much harder time with them. Even though it is not canon, I believe Empire at War is very good at representing the armaments of most warships and what the weapon was used for. Let me know if you guys agree or if I missed something or made a mistake, I'd be glad to know.
